UNITED LOCAL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH CHRIS KADVAN

After graduating 7 seniors in 2019, United Basketball looks toward a youth movement in 2020.  Led again by fearless leader, Chris Kadvan, the Eagles are looking to soar under the radar and compete in the always competitive EOAC.

With the season just around the corner, we sat down for our weekly conversation with the Head Coach for United, and discuss opportunities and obstacles that will be faced throughout the season.

A fresh season full of highlights is ahead for United, and we’ll have it right here on YSN.  So, sit back, relax, and enjoy Episode 1 of United Local Coach’s Corner.

EAGLES SOAR IN SEASON OPENER

WARREN, OH- Coming off an incredible run in football, the Kennedy Eagles are looking to keep the momentum going on the hardwood.  It all started Monday Evening with an explosive victory over Fuchs, 79-60.

As a team, the Eagles posted big numbers including 13 splashes from beyond the arc and 18 assists to go with them.  Saba Svani led the way with 22 points while Gabe Green and Bobby Plizga each had 14.  Tyrel James added 11 to start the year off right as well!

The Eagles (1-0) will now turn to Saturday’s matchup against the high-powered Struthers Wildcats of the NE8 Conference.

 

SALEM RACES PAST UNITED

SALEM, OH- Kyla Jamison and Abbie Davidson powered the Lady Quakers past United on Monday night.

Jamison led all scorers with 13 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Freshman Abbie Davidson dialed in from deep on the night hitting three 3 pointers and finishing with 11 points. Taylor Troy also chipped in 8 points respectively for the Lady Quakers tonight. Annie Davidson had a solid night on the defensive end grabbing 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Salem will be home on Wednesday hosting Canfield. JV starts at 5:30pm, Varsity at 7pm.

THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR THE EAGLES FALL TO THE REDSKINS

RAVENNA, OH – In a week that was highly focused on the last two years, the Eagles were unable to execute against the region’s top team, the Cuyahoga Heights Redskins, 33-14, on the “Smurf turf.”

Cuyahoga Heights struck first on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Sam Shafer to Kyle Polack late in the first quarter. The Redskins struck again early in the second quarter on a 2 yard run by Shafer, making the score 13-0. Warren JFK didn’t wait long to get themselves on the board, as Jesse Likens took a handoff and dashed 60 yards to the endzone, cutting the Redskins’ lead to 13-7. Cuyahoga Heights then took their next offensive play 73 yards on a pass completion from Shafer to Jason Bartosik. The Eagles proceeded to create their own drive as they marched down the field and cut the lead to 20-14, on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Christian Marantis to Savone Williamson. Cuyahoga Heights punched it in one last time in the first half on a 1 yard run by Shafer, making the score at the end of the first half, 26-14 in favor of the Redskins.

The second half was uneventful in terms of scoring except for a 55 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Polack to Jason Bartosik on a fake punt early in the third quarter. That pushed the score to 33-14, where it stayed until the end of the game.

Warren JFK was led through the air by Christian Marantis with 6 completions on 18 attempts for 74 yards and 1 touchdowns. The Eagles were led on the ground by Jesse Likens with 30 carries for 221 yards and 1 touchdown. Warren JFK’s top receivers were Savone Williamson with 2 reception for 34 yards and 1 touchdown, Gabe Green with 2 reception for 25 yards, and Cameron Hollobaugh with 2 reception for 15 yards. The Eagles were on defense by Giovanni Coletti with 8.5 tackles and Jesse Likens with 5 tackles.

With the loss tonight, the Warren JFK Eagles closed out their 2019 football season with a final record of 8-4.

TO MAURO’S FORECAST; THUNDER AND ICE

WARREN, OH- He’s one of the many features of the future for Coach Bayuk and the Eagles, and he’s earned a starting spot in the high-octane offense that is Warren JFK.

When senior Christian Marantis was out with an injury, Coach Bayuk gave a QB by Committee look to the opponents with one being Cam Hollobaugh, and the other being a sophomore standout, Mike “The Iceman” Mauro.

Mauro like many on the roster is a variable that the coaching staff can count on to fill in at several different positions and stay confident that wherever he’s placed, he’ll be an impact player.  Mauro is a nightmare for the opposition both on and off the field.  The Iceman gives coaches fits with his ability to be all over the field and Hemi-like motor that never stops.  Meanwhile, defenders are left laying in wonder when Mauro totes the rock- an up-back with a thunder-like momentum that makes defenses quiver.  Literally, there was a play this year that Mauro practically ran through his jersey and has since forced the semi-retirement of his home “16” uniform in the place of his injured teammate’s number 22 (which is a cool story in its own right.)

WARREN, OH- With the Eagles rolling into Week 12, Warren JFK Faithful is gearing up for a rematch of the last two years- and neither has gone the way of the #BluePride.  However, this year is different.

Almost…destined.

Sitting in the backfield is a brand new Ferrari for the Eagle offense to ride in 2019, and that sweet ride is in the form of Junior, Jesse Likens.  Likens is known for his speed on the field, and his team-first attitude off

With an injury to his friend and teammate, Jordan Edmundson, the Eager Eagle flew into action and never looked back.  Racking up frequent flyer miles into the opponent’s endzone, including a trifecta in Week 11 against Independence.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER; EAGLES FLY TO ROUND 2

INDEPENDENCE, OH- The Warren J.F.K. Eagles are advancing to the second round of the OHSAA Division VII playoffs. J.F.K. took down the number four seed Independence 41-7, under the lights at Alumni Field, in Independence on Saturday.

Kennedy was lead by Junior running back Jesse Likens, who was untouchable on the turf, collecting three touchdowns throughout the night.  Wide Receiver, Cameron Hollobaugh was very active for the Eagles offense, as he caught a touchdown, as well as ran for a touchdown to seal the playoff victory for the Eagles.

J.F.K. will now take on playoff rival, Cuyahoga Heights this Saturday at 7 P.M. The game will take place at Ravenna High School. Our very own John Bolino will have the call for the second-round matchup, here on YSN.

THE PRAYING MARANTIS

WARREN, OH- Adversity is defined as a set of difficulties or misfortune.  For Warren JFK Senior Quarterback, Christian Marantis, he’s taken that definition- and turned it upside down.

The senior slinger for the Eagles has battled through injury this year to make his way back onto the field and now intends on staying on it for another week- or five.  A young man that can’t help but smile for what he’s been through is as humble as they come.  He’s put the work in, and now he wants to cash in for the reward of the efforts for his team.

Though his rehab, hard-work, and determination will get him along, he knows it’ll take more to get him where he wants to go.  After all: the answer is right in his name.

The Eagles are in the playoffs for the fifth straight year, and Marantis has been a strong part of each of those seasons, but he knows there’s more to life than football.  We caught up with Christian in this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: THE PRAYING MARANTIS.

YES, HE CAM!

WARREN, OH- You’re familiar with the term “Jack of all trades, master of none?”  Well, imagine if you had an individual who was so team-oriented that he would give up his favorite position in order to suit the team, and help win games.  All the while becoming a “Jack of most trades, master of all.”

Let us introduce you to the Kennedy Swiss Army Knife- Cam Hollobaugh.

Just a junior, Hollobaugh’s student-athlete portfolio is so diversified that people literally see him everywhere they go.  From the school news network (WJFK) to posters, commercials, media interviews, basketball court, baseball diamond, and of course…the football field.  Hollobaugh is preparing himself for anything life can throw at him, but right now he’s having the time of his life with his closest friends, and coaches- chasing a D7 State Championship.

He leaves everyone around him saying he can do anything he puts his mind to, and coincidentally, he does it at a high level.

KING OF THE HILL

WARREN, OH- When a Head Football Coach is searching for his ideal football team, many think it begins with “skilled players.”  However, all the experienced coaches know that your backs aren’t worth a hill of beans if you don’t have the talent up front to protect and clear the way.

When you talk to Kennedy Head Coach Jeff Bayuk, his eyes light up and his smile widens when talking about the pure talent and work ethic that comes along with his senior starting tackle, Earl Hill.  Hill has been the anchor of this offensive and defensive line and has created quite the name for himself at the next level in regard to his size and ability, and that doesn’t even begin to consider his outstanding demeanor.

When you talk to Hill, he’s a young man who looks you straight in the eye.  Answers questions with enthusiasm, and excitement.  You can tell that he loves what he is doing.
