THE LAST LINE OF DEFENSE

HUBBARD, OH- Overall it’s been a great year for the Hubbard Eagles on the Soccer field.  The Birds have flown their way to a winning record and are looking to make waves in the postseason.  An offensive juggernaut that has scored 70 goals and has won games with their firepower is impressive, to say the least.  Make no mistake, though.  Hubbard only giving up 26 goals has been where they have made their hay while the sun shines on them.

A major reason behind the goal separation is goalkeeper John Reinard.

Reinard is a leader that gets it done on and off the pitch.  Our team over at YSN Hubbard had a chance to catch up with the Eagle netminder to discuss this year’s team, as well as what his interests are off the field.

ST. THOMAS SINKS WARREN JFK

St Thomas Aquinas and Warren JFK met up for an important Divison 7 Region 25 matchup tonight. Warren JFK at the start of the game was number 3 in the region while St. Thomas was 6th. St. Thomas used a lot of big plays and 5 touchdown passes by Senior Quarterback Alex Hawkins throws 5 touchdowns to win the showdown 34-9.

The Eagles took the opening kickoff down the field all the way down to the Knights 17-yard line, the Eagles had to settle for 34-yard  field goal by senior kicker Armand Nannicola to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead with 9:25 left in the first quarter. The rest of the quarter was a back and forth battle to end the first quarter, the Eagles failed on a 4th down and 5 on the Knights 30-yard line to end the quarter. The Knights opened the second quarter with the ball after the Eagles turned the ball over on downs. Hawkins completed a short slant to Junior Vinny Zeren to the Eagles 49-yard line on 3rd and 4. On the next play, Hawkins threw a long 49-yard pass to Senior Elijah Chungo who beat his defender by a step in the left side of the end zone, to give the Knights a 7-3 lead after the extra point was added.

Kennedy blocked a field goal attempt by the Knights with 1:25 left in the first half and tried to pick it up inside their own 5-yard line and took over on their own 3-yard line. On the first play after the blocked field goal Sophmore Michael Mauro took a handoff right up the middle to the Eagles 46-yard line. Coach Bayuk ran 2 more plays not taking a timeout content on going into half time trailing 7-3 to the Knights.
The Knights blew the game open in the 3rd quarter when they took the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter and with 11:14 left in the quarter, Hawkins threw a slant pass to Junior Asia Burk who outran the secondary for a 49-yard touchdown to make the score 14-3. The Knights scored 14 points in the first 2 minutes and 43 seconds of the 2nd half. TIGERS TOPPLED AGAINST UNITED

Hanoverton, OH – Wikipedia describes Murphy’s Law as an adage or epigram typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” That was the sentiment for the Wellsville Tigers as they suffered a 46-30 loss to United tonight that ended their 3-0 start to league play.

The second quarter is one the Tigers would soon like to forget. Senior superstar wide receiver Darien Suggs left the game with an injury, from there nothing seemed to go the Tigers way on offense. Multiple turnovers dropped passes, and penalties helped the Eagles put up 30 points in the second frame. The end of the first quarter saw the Eagles with an 8-6 lead, at halftime it was 38-16.

On the defensive side, the Tigers had no answer for Eagles tailback Tyler Lippiatt. The senior put his team on his back, finishing the night with 27 carries for 292 yards and four touchdowns.  Lippiatt came up with several 3rd down conversions, long runs, and seemed to break multiple tackles each time he touched the ball.

The Tigers tried to stage a second-half comeback, but two consecutive long drives in the third quarter ending inside the 10-yard line did the Tigers in. Troy Carter finished 18 for 31 with 271 yards passing and two touchdowns to go with two one-yard touchdown runs. Sophomore receiver Valen Krzyston had 10 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Wright pitched in with a 61-yard touchdown catch of his own. Krzyston also had an interception on defense.

The Eagles outgained the Tigers by just 12 yards on the night, but it was their 10 minute time of possession advantage that sealed the Tigers fate. With the loss, Wellsville moves to 5-2 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 3-4. The Tigers play at Columbiana next week, while United heads to Southern Local.

CLIPPERS FLY PAST THE EAGLES

COLUMBIANA, OH- After a slow start, the Columbiana Clippers erupted in the second quarter en route to a 41-8 victory over the United Golden Eagles Friday night here at Firestone Park. Senior signal-caller, Jakob Cross, had a prolific first half throwing four touchdown passes and running for one.

The Clippers’ first score came on a 25-yard catch and run from Hunter Zentner. Cross would then find Chase Franken down the left sideline for 72 yards. An onslaught of scoring would see Cross hit Xathon Cross in the back of the end zone and Justin Rydarowicz in the short corner
before scampering 53 yards for a rushing touchdown to close out the scoring in the first half giving the Clips a 34-0 lead at intermission.

Columbiana would tack on one more in the second half as Tony Kocanjer romped 70 yards to paydirt. The lone United score was one for the ages. Tyler Lippiatt turned the corner from his own one-yard line, broke a couple of tackles and cut back before streaking down the middle of the field for a 99-yard jaunt to the end zone.

Cross amassed over 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in the first half, prompting Coach Spaite to give his QB the rest of the night off. Franken had 97 yards receiving for Columbiana. The Clippers (3-3) host Brookfield on Homecoming night next Friday. YSNLive.com will bring

RAIDERS SURVIVE SCARE AT HUBBARD

Hubbard volleyball has been in the midst of a rebuild the last couple seasons, with only 4 wins coming in to Tuesday night they gave South Range all they could’ve wanted. The Raiders escaped Hubbard with a five set victory (25-23 19-25 25-20 24-26 15-10).

From the first point of the game Hubbard set the tone with their defense. They did a tremendous job the whole match keeping balls in play and just giving themselves a chance at getting the point. The Raiders struggled through every facet of the game, but everything started with their serving. Both receiving, and sending them over caused problems for the Raiders. They had 11 service errors as a team on the night. The saving grace for the Raiders was their defense. They gathered 66 digs as a team, on a night where long rallies were common.  The Raiders saw a lot of chances to win the match earlier than the fifth set slip away. They struggled to hold on to leads. They had a 20-14 lead in set 4 before ultimately dropping it. South Range was able to come out in the fifth set and take control of it early. The Raiders escaped Hubbard with the five set win.

Anna Primavera lead the offense with 15 kills, and 6 digs. Izzy Lamparty was also in double figures with 13 kills, 6 blocks, and 2 digs.  Emily Irons had 32 assists, and 7 digs. Reagan Irons finished with 29 digs.

The Raiders return to action Wednesday as they travel to Ursuline.
