HUBBARD GRINDS OUT A DEFENSIVE BATTLE

By Jamie Thomson

YOUNGSTOWN
, Ohio – Garland Warren punched in a 5-yard touchdown run with 1 minute and 17 seconds remining in the ballgame to lead Hubbard (1-0) past Youngstown East, 10-6, on Friday night.

The Eagles’ game winning drive came after a forced three and out and a short punt the netted just 20-yards for the Golden Bears, setting Hubbard up at the East 30.

The 6-play possession took just over 2 minutes off the clock, and helped the Eagles escape with a miraculous victory in a game that felt was firmly in the hands of the Golden Bears. Hubbard survived four turnovers while forcing three in the process.

Still, the Golden Bears had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. After seeing starting quarterback Andrew Blackmon exit the game due to an injury, East backup quarterback Daryan Brownlee forced the ball down the field with urgency. The Golden Bears would get all the way down to the Eagle 24-yardline before time would expire.

Hubbard had the ball in East’s redzone on three separate occasions prior to the game winning drive but were only able to muster points once. Sophomore kicker Caleb McKay’s 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter would prove to be vital in the closing moments.

The two squads battled into the break but the Cowboy’s would hold a seven point lead at half.

Coach McGaughy’s Cowboys would explode out toas many as a 20-point lead in the third. Matt Jones and Josiah Gonzalez would both connect from deep in the quarter, while Jason Hewlett led the way with eight.

Hewlett would score six more fourth quarter points to eclipse the thirty-point mark, while Matt Jones’ 13 points in the final stanza saw him fall just shy of 30. While Chaney dominated the Golden Bears in the second half, a herculean effort from East’s Cam Sly would keep the score respectable. THE NIGHTMARE ENDS IN HOWLAND

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – It had been a rough six-game losing streak for the Howland Tigers going into their game Tuesday with Youngstown East. In four of those games, they lost by five points or less. There was a totally different story against the Golden Bears. The Tigers would charge up for an 18-point halftime lead and would never look back as they picked up the 57-31 victory.

Despite a slow 6-6 start, Howland would pick up momentum and end the first quarter on a 10-0 run to end the period with a 16-6 edge. This would continue into the second quarter, with the Tigers scoring another 16 points, while holding East to just 8 points en route to a 32-14 halftime advantage. East would play in the Tigers in the third, making the period even with a score of 10-10, but Howland would pull away with a 14-7 advantage in the fourth, leading by as much as 29.

Nine players scored for the Tigers on the night, but what stood out for coach Dan Bubon and his team was the play of JV players TJ Douglas and Anthony Chieffo, who both played key minutes in the final three quarters. Douglas excelled on the floor, as he would actually lead all scorers with 11 on the night. Chieffo would cash in on his end, as in the first few moments of action, he drained a corner three to give him a spark, and he would end the night with 7 marks. Other scorers chipping the way for Howland were John Perry and Connor Durig, who would both finish with 8. Jose Castro led East with 7 points.

Howland (7-8) snaps a six-game losing streak dating back to January 2nd as they pick up their first victory of the 2023 calendar year. They will now get ready for an AAC rematch with Boardman at home this Friday night. The Tigers will look to split with the Spartans as they fell short in Boardman 60-46 back on January 14th. East (8-6) will stay on the road on Friday when they travel out to Warren Harding. The Bears were defeated by the Raiders last year by a score of 65-49.

EAST HOLDS STRONG ON THEIR HOME FLOOR

Youngstown OH- The West Branch boys basketball team traveled to Youngstown to take on the East Golden Bears last night hoping to gather a road victory. That, unfortunately, did not happen as East walked away with a very impressive 43-32 victory. East has been having quite the season after winning just  1 game in last year’s season.

That East defense was big all night. They held the Warriors to just seven first-quarter points and 14 points at the half. The Warrior offense just couldn’t get a quality look the entire night as East made them work for just about every shot. Jeremiah Thomas led West Branch with 9 points and Jaxon Robb contributed 7.

East only scored 43 points but that offense made some big shots. Isaiah McCray was the high scorer with 17 points. Tyrone Hudson and Jose Castro each contributed 7 points respectively. Castro was solid defensively as he came up with several steals. Talking to coach Whipple after the game, he said the biggest turnaround for this East program was “changing the culture starting in the classroom.” He said that being disciplined in the classroom helps you become more focused and prepared for when it comes to playing basketball.

With the win, East improves to 6-4 on the season. They will look to gather another win when they travel to Mooney on Friday at 7 P.M. West Branch drops to 4-4 with the loss and will look to bounce back against Carrollton on Friday.

EAST KEEPS ON WINNING

YOUNGSTOWN OH- For the first time since 2019 and the early 2010s,, the East High Lady Golden Bears came into their fifth game of the season against the Niles McKinley Lady Red Dragons who were at an even one and one record.  Last season, it was East getting the victory and they would get a repeat, dominating under head coach Tanisha Franklin by the final score of 53-13.

In the first half, it wasn’t the scoring of Samair Colon that wasn’t impressive, but instead it was her four assists.  She would leave off right as she did last game then, scoring double digits in the second half and finishing with 13 points.  Joi Reynolds was the second highest Lady Bear as she dropped eight points, followed by Joh’Niqua Clay with seven Yelian (Jai) Maldonando with six points and five in the paint for Alyssa Crankfield.  For Niles, they struggled early in the paint and behind the arc but coach Bolhas team improved in the second half shooting a few wide open threes.  Gianna Wagner shot two threes in the third and finished with six points, Alaina Thigpen had three points, while Kaite Heinselman, Emily Macik, Jules Money and Abbey Reed each scored two points.

The East High Lady Bears will travel to Akron to take on the Akron North Vikings Friday, while the Lady Red Dragons of Niles will host another Steel Valley iconic school in the Lady Chaney Cowgirls Monday the 5th.  After the coach, Ian O’Brien caught up with Tanisha Franklin after the big victory and what to expect against North.

EAST MEANS BUSINESS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- After dropping their first game of the season to Lakeview in overtime, East won their next two games in decisive fashion. They headed home on Monday night to take on a mighty Liberty team coming off a district championship, and returning just about everybody.  The Bears were not bothered by the task however, as they edged out Liberty 42-40 and seriously opened some eyes around the area.  East won despite being outscored 27-20 in the second half.

Samair Colon led East with 15 points on the night. She also played lock down defense on the talent Leopards guards.  Alyssa Crankfield was also in double figures for East scoring 10 points.

Liberty was led by Aaliyah Foster with a game-high 22 points.  Demi Watson, and Kylee Thomas both finished the night with 9 points for the Leopards.

East is now 3-1 on the season and they will continue their run on Wednesday as they go to Niles. Liberty will try to bounce back on Friday night as they host Hudson in a Girls/Boys double header.

CHANEY CHARGES INTO POSTSEASON

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The final week of the regular season saw a lot of great rivalry matchups across the network. The Steel Valley Conference didn’t skip out on that either as all four teams were in action against one another. Mooney and Ursuline fought tooth and nail in the Holy War and Chaney and East met in the Youngstown City Classic at Rayen Field. The Cowboys came in with a near perfect season and a top-four spot in the postseason on the line and the Golden Bears came in with a singular win on the season coming via a Mooney forfeit earlier in the season. The postseason was still in reach if East could pull of the week 10 upset.

That would not be the case as the Chaney Cowboys showed their dominance once again this season over their city rivals. Chaney never blinked and got out to an early 21-0 lead in the game and turned on the cruise control in route to a 34-0 shutout for the Cowboys defense. They were led offensively by backup quarterback No. 16 Drew Gault who was able to control the game both through the air and on the ground against the Golden Bears. He grabbed a handful of yards on the ground but shined through the air as he connected with DJ Waller and Jaquan Johnson on a pair of 25-plus yard touchdown throws. Future Bearcat Jason Hewlett also pulled in a pick-six on the defensive side of the football field. Justin Amill-Austin and Jawan Freeman both punched in rushing touchdowns as well. The Cowboys won the battle on the scoreboard, but they had their problems holding on to the football as a pair of fumbles both landed in the lap of the Golden Bears.

While East had struggles scoring Friday night, they were able to put together a few nice drives against one of the top defenses in the region. Thomas Davis was a workhorse all night long getting every big play on the ground for the Golden Bears offense. They didn’t have a drive of over twenty yards until the fourth quarter against the Cowboys as they drove down the field before failing to convert on a fourth and long.

East falls to (1-9) in week 10 for the second time in as many years under Head Coach Mark Assion. Their season comes to a close as they needed a win to sneak in as the 16-seed for the postseason. Chaney moves to (9-1) after their rivalry win. This is the first time they’ve had home field advantage in the postseason in over twenty years. Their week 11 matchup will be announced on Sunday.

A FIELD GOAL IS ENOUGH FOR HOWLAND

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Sometimes it’s not about how much you score, but when you score. That was a true statement for Howland on Friday night as they scored a 4th quarter field goal to win 3-0 over East.  Freshman Jack Litton was the kicker that played hero for the Tigers.

Nick Leasure made up a bulk of the Howland offense running for 120 yards on 17 carries Howland outshined East on offense 182-63.  Both teams struggled to throw the ball with a combined 14 yards passing between the teams.

It’s a big test ahead for Howland in Week 8 as they will host Chaney. East also has a  tough task ahead as they’ll host Canfield.

CARDINAL MOONEY WINS ITS 500TH GAME

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Cardinal Mooney has arguable the most prestigious football programs in the area. One walk inside the Mooney gym will quickly reveal the state level type of success the Cardinals have had over the years. Friday night was a special night for not just the players on the current roster, but every player and coach that has come through the door. Mooney’s 37-0 win over Youngstown East gave the program its 500th win in its illustrious history.

Ashton O’Brien continued to impress and grow throughout the season. He was able to escape the picker and make plenty of plays down the field. A big highlight was a touchdown pass that threaded the needle to Carlos Gomez.  Noah Thomas was a hard runner all night. He scored a couple touchdowns on his way to a great performance.

Mooney now Carrie’s a two game winning streak into week 7. They will host Brush at Mineral Ridge on Friday.  East will stay at home to host Howkand on Friday night.
