BADGER FALLS AT THE BUZZER

ASHTABULA, OHIO- The Badger Braves traveled to Fairport Harbor tonight to take on the Skippers. In what was a very back and forth game all night long, in the end the game went to the Skippers in overtime.

The Braves continued to attack throughout the game and were led by Duncan Moy, who dropped 24 points in the losing effort.

James Gadomsky led the way for the Skippers with 19 points, including the buzzer beater three pointer that pulled the Skippers over the Braves 59-56.

The Braves fall to a record of 11-2 and look to get back on the winning track this Friday when they take on the Lordstown Red Devils.

CANFIELD SURVIVES ANOTHER AAC THRILLER

HOWLAND CENTER, OH – It was a back and forth battle on Tuesday night as Howland and Canfield squared off in Game 1 of their two-game rivalry series. In a game of various lead changes, the Cardinals got the best of the Tigers at the foul line as they pulled off the 54-51 road victory.

Canfield had a splendid night shooting the ball as their perimeter game helped them find open shots all night, with three-pointers falling down left and right. With 14 of their 16 players being underclassmen, players such as Dom Cruz and Ray McCune got the hot hand as the Cards were able to hit five treys as a team in the first half alone. It was phenomenal to the point that Sam Castranova was able to drain a three as time expired in the first period.

Howland, however, had a shooting game of their own as the charge was led by senior Brandon Null. Usually in the forward position down low, he was comfortable out of position on the night, shocking the Cards with his exceptional shooting from the wings to help push the Tigers to some lead changes. Fellow Ben Bronson also helped his hand in the second half with two pivotal three pointers.

Despite Howland taking a three-point lead in the fourth, Canfield stayed their course and refused to panic. Staying disciplined underneath the basket, along with some smart substitutions by veteran coach John Cullen, they would cause Howland to commit a crucial foul going down for the ball, a foul that would put the Cardinals into single bonus. Junior Tony Russo was relied on as their go-to foul shooter, and he would not disappoint, as he went 6/6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to help his team hold three-point leads twice. Despite Howland coach Dan Bubon’s best efforts to get his team into position for a game-tying shot, the Cardinals closed down on defense and blocked the three to secure the win.

Canfield (10-3) remains undefeated in AAC play at 3-0 as they will now have back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Chaney and Poland, respectively. The Cardinals will look to take down the Cowboys on Friday night before quickly turning around for the Battle of 224 with the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Howland (6-7) has now lost five straight after starting the year 6-2. They will take a break from conference action when they travel out to Cardinal Mooney on Friday night. Mooney ousted the Tigers 53-52 last season at Howland.

RAIDERS USE FINAL GASP TO KEEP WIN STREAK ALIVE

CANFIELD OH- South Range came in to Tuesday night sporting a 4 game winning streak. As they prepared to host Struthers, they knew this would be a different animal to beat. The Wildcats bring a ton of talent with them everywhere they go. Despite all of that though, these two teams found themselves locked in a defensive battle instead of a high flying barn burner.  In fact only nine points were scored between the two teams in the first quarter.  The trend continued the rest of the night. The Raiders held a 16-14 lead into the locker room.

It was the second half where Struthers started to pick it up a little bit.  They slowly but surely built up a 30-22 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. They’d eventually grab a ten point lead later on in the final frame.  With time running down and their backs against the wall, the Raiders turned on a switch and went on a quick 10-0 run to tie things up. It was helped along by a couple of interior shots from Landon Moore, and a three from Nate Lewis.  It wouldn’t be Nate’s last clutch play either. After the Raiders tied the game at 36-36, the Raiders defense forced a turnover.  On the other end Lewis drilled a mid range jumper from the foul line to give his team the two point lead with 1 second left.  Struthers had a pretty good last look considering they only had one tick to get it off, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Raiders walked away with a five game win streak 38-36.

Moore led the Raiders, and all scorers with 16 points. Lewis was able to finish with 7 points, and 5 of those came during the Raiders 12-0 run to end the game.  Ayden Leon had to really work for his 7 points as Struthers made a point to lock down the paint.

The Wildcats were led by Austin McCollough who got in to double figures with 11 points.  Chance Lazcko had a big third quarter for the Wildcats and finished with 8 points.  Nick Delgratta and Rocco Garchar both scored 6 points for the Struthers offense.

South Range is still riding high, but their streak will be tested again on Friday as they welcome in Niles. Struthers will try to bounce back as they host league leading Girard.

URSULINE WARES DOWN THE EAGLES

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The second day of Ursuline’s MLK Tournament even featured three basketball games. The nightcap was a matchup of the winners from day one in what promised to be a fun game to watch. Both Warren JFK and Ursuline dominated their way to victory on Sunday to get to this game.  Ursuline wasn’t in the mood to give us an instant classic though. They continued their dominance in a 88-60 victory.

Terrance Pankey led the Irish in their best offensive output of the season. He went off for 24 points against the Eagles.  Geno Lucente did a lot of work from behind the arc on his way to 16 points.  Vincent Flauto wasn’t going to be overshadowed. His three point shooting shined through as he hit 5 treys on the way to 22.

Nico Ciminero did his best for the Eagles in a valiant effort scoring 16 points.  Jaden Rishel also had a good day in double figures with 13.

The tests don’t stop coming for the Irish as they’re off until Friday when they host Austintown Fitch.  Warren JFK will also be in action on Friday as they hit the road to Southeast.

SAHLI SOLID AS A ROCK

CANFIELD OH- Canfield is in the middle of an impressive season.  The Cardinals have have washed through their tough schedule and currently have a one loss record.  There are players who can beat you throughout the entire Canfield roster.  Keeping everyone steady and solid is Kate Sahli.  In a room full of lock down shooters, Kate is a drive first guard that not only can finish through contact, but can also set up their perimeter shooters by collapsing the defense.

Sahli is one of many senior leaders that the Cardinals have in their program. She brings her own form of leadership to the locker room, and is one of the biggest reasons that Canfield sticks together.  Their program is in good hands. She’ll leave an impact on the younger players that will carry on the success after Sahli and the rest of the seniors graduate.

Sahli took the time to sit down with Anthony Hartwig to talk about her senior season. They talk about the special season that the Cardinals are having, the goals that she has set for herself, and much more. Check out the newest Canfield Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

REBELS PICK UP BIG HOME VICTORY

COLUMBIANA OH- Crestview was looking for a momentum swinging win on Friday as they hosted Garfield.  Crestview picked up the win 61-50 which took their record back above .500.

The Rebels offense was well balanced with four players in double figures. Jonathan Best led the way for them with 16 points.  Wyatt Miller was right behind him scoring 14 points.  Kirkland Miller also finished with 14 points. James Best rounded out the scoring for Crestview with 10 points.

Garfield was paced by Jackson Sommer who finished with a game-high 17 points including 5 shots from behind the arc.  Nick Edie also found himself in double figures with 11 points.  Preston Gedeon was the final G-Man in double figures chipping in 10.

Both teams hit the road on Tuesday. Crestview will match up with LaBrae.  Garfield will travel to Brookfield.

THE TALES OF CAPTAIN HOOK

BROOKFIEKD OH- A trip to Brookfield on a Monday, or Thursday night has been quite the treat the last few seasons. The Warriors have put together a roster that would give any opponent nightmares. Starring the ship for them has been one of the best players out area has to offer in Sophia Hook.

When Hook hit the scene fans knew immediately what kind of impact she would have on the basketball scene for Northeast Ohio.  The Warriors guard can do it all. Want her to drive and finish through some traffic? Done. Want her to step back and drill a three? No problem. As a senior Hook as fine tuned her game to the point where it is hard to find many holes.

If you don’t believe us, take a gander at her numbers this season. Hook averages 19.8 points per game this season, which is impressive enough but you look deeper and you find she also averages 8.3 rebounds per game, 3.8 assists per game, and 3.3 steals per game.  Good luck finding many players putting up those kinds of numbers in that many categories.

Sophia took the time to talk with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig last week to discuss her senior season. She talks about being a leader, the development of her game, and much more.  Make sure to check out the latest Brookfield Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

POLAND REFUSES TO LOSE

POLAND OH- It was only two days ago that Poland suffered their first conference loss to Girard. They were happy that they didn’t have to sit on a loss for long, but they also understood the United team coming to town was no pushover.  The Eagles gained everyone’s attention as they led most of the way through three quarters. Although their biggest lead of the day was only 5, the Eagles never gave in to Poland throughout the day. That was until the final frame.  Trailing 31-29 heading into the last 8 minutes, the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 13-4 and walked away with a 42-35 win.

Sarah Forsyth paced Poland on the day with a hard fought 13 points. Katie McDonald played an excellent 4th quarter and finished in double figures with 11 points.  Mary Brant contributed 6 points to the Poland offense.

United was led by Grace Knight with 12 points. Maddie Kibbler had a solid day getting in to double figures with 10 points.  Taylor Cope chipped in with 7 points on the day.

Poland returns to NE8 play on Thursday as they host Niles.  United will also get back to their conference on Thursday as they travel to Leetonia.

HARRISON CENTRAL TRAPS THE BEAVERS

The Beaver Dome played host Friday night to a story of two halves. The second half proved to be the stronger story as Harrison Central defeated Beaver Local 44-32 on Homecoming night.

The Beavers were in control early as Evan Stephenson would lead the way scoring six 1st quarter points guiding the red & white to a 13-6 lead. The strong play for Beaver Local continued in the 2nd quarter as the defense would put the squeeze on the Huskies creating transition points leading to a 19-9 lead. Broc Taylor would close out the first half converting a breakaway layup off a steal giving the home team a 26-16 halftime lead.

This is where the story would completely change as Harrison Central would author the ending. The Huskies defense would completely shut down the Beavers offense behind a smothering 2-3 zone. That defense would lead the Harrison Central comeback as they would limit the Beavers to just four points in the 3rd quarter.  Hayden Cassidy provided the highlight of the night as his beyond halfcourt shot at the buzzer would ignite the Huskies faithful tying the score 30-30 heading to the 4th quarter.

The final frame proved to be a forgettable chapter for Beaver Local as they would only muster two points late in the quarter off a Broc Taylor runner in the lane. The Huskies outscored their opponent 14-2 in the final frame on their way to the comeback victory.

The Beavers were led by Evan Stehanson and Broc Taylor each scoring 12 respectively. Every story deserves royalty as Faith Talbott would be crowned Homecoming Queen prior to the start of the game. Beaver Local 6-6 looks to stop a 2 game losing streak as they travel to Indian Creek Tuesday.

RAIDERS WIN STREAK CONTINUES

HUBBARD, Ohio –

South Range (5-6) has four Raiders post double digits for their third straight conference road victory.

Winless on the season, the Hubbard Eagles (0-12) road the back of Gavin Rybicki’s strong first three minutes to take an early 7-2 lead.
