TIGERS NEW FACES PROPEL THEM TO VICTORY

NEW MIDDLETOWN, OH – While head coach Steve French needs to replace two 1000-point scores from last year’s squad, the Tigers are equipped with plenty of familiar faces to help match their production.

Junior Beau Brungard and Senior Clay Medvec are returning starters for the Tigers, but it was two newcomers to the starting lineup who propelled Springfield to their first victory of the season.

Combining for 40 of the Tigers 59 points were center Alex Rothwell and shooting guard RJ Smith. Rothwell had 24 and Smith drained 16 tallies himself.  Rothwell dominated on the glass and in the paint, finishing through contact, converting 2 and-ones. Smith, on the other hand, did most of his damage from beyond the arc, hitting 3 three-pointers on the night.

For the visiting Salem Quakers, it was Drew Weir who did most of the heavy lifting with 21 points. Weir hit 3 three-pointers in the third quarter alone and led the team in scoring for each quarter.  Brock Young chipped in 10 for the Quakers as well.

Although the final score appears close at 59-47, this was always the Tigers game. After jumping out to an early 5-2, Springfield never let it go. Expanding the margin to 8 by the end of the quarter, the Tigers always seemed to have an answer to the Salem Quakers.

LEADING SCORERS:

Springfield

Alex Rothwell – 24 points

RJ Smith – 16 points

Beau Brungard – 8 points

Salem

Drew Weir – 21 points

Brock Young – 1o points

Hunter Griffith – 5 points

Cade Rohm – 5 points

WEST BRANCH BREAKS OUT AGAINST RAIDERS

BELOIT OH- West Branch and South Range boys opened the season on Friday night. It was the only show in town, and the Warriors were the ones who shined on the big stage. The separated themselves and never let go of their lead in a 55-40.

Justin Hendershott was Electric for the Warriors finishing with a game high 17 points. Dru DeShields was also in double figures with 10.

Michael Patrone led the Raiders with 14 points. Corey Penick added 7 points off the bench. Nate Brown was his usual defensive self, forcing 3 offensive fouls. Brown finished last season top 5 in the state in charges taken.

West Branch moves on to host Ravenna on Tuesday.

The Raiders want to rebound as they are currently scheduled to host Canfield on December 8th.

STARTING STRONG RAIDERS TAKE DOWN CANFIELD

The South Range boys’ basketball team waited a long time to get back on the court in the offseason. The saying goes good things come to those who wait. The Raiders used a 16-8 third quarter to pull away from Canfield and win 65-47.

The game was a real back and forth affair up until that 16-8 third frame. With 14 seconds left in the first half, the Raiders led 31-28 and the Cardinals had the ball. They were poised with the opportunity to either cut the lead to one or tie the game before halftime. Kris Scandy had other plans though as he jumped into a passing lane got the steal, and got the deep three at the buzzer to put the Raiders up 34-28 at the break. It was all Raiders from that point on.

Chris Brooks was just a rebound away from a double-double with a 26 point 9 rebound effort. Dante DiGaetano was also in double figures with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The Raiders return to the floor on Tuesday night as they host LaBrae.
