FITCH PLAYS A STEP ABOVE IRISH

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Both Ursuline and Austintown Fitch came into week two with a lot of momentum, but only one would come up top in the week two matchup.  Last year, Fitch beat Ursuline by 20.  This year what seemed to start out as a close game, turned into a dominant performance in the second half.

Ursuline would score the first points on the board to start the game, when Brady Shannon threw a nice deep ball to Terrell Dillworth for a 71-yard touchdown.  The Irish went to go muddle huddle, trying the two-point conversion, but failed, making it 6-0.

Fitch answered back with scores of their own however from only a few yards out with the score now being 13-6 Falcons.  The Falcons took advantage of the Ursuline mistakes as Tyler Evans tossed to Senior Todd Simons for a 37-yard strike and it was now 21-6.  However, Brady Shannon and the Irish were not going down without a fight.  Shannon found the speedy Trenton Hill who juked a couple of defenders was gone, going 37-yards to the end zone. The two-point conversion was good and the Irish were only down by seven.

Shannon once again showed his quarterback accuracy, as he found Marc Manning 11-yards out.  However, kicker Dylan Peplowski missed the extra point and Fitch was still in the lead by one.  That is when Falcons decided to swarm the field.  It first started with Tyree Mitchell went 58-yards out with it being 28-20.  After that, Fitch did a surprise onside kick, something the Irish were not expecting and recovered the ball.

The Falcons scored four more times, having the younger athletes come in by the time the late third and fourth quarter came around, while pressuring Shannon and the Irish offensive line. Ursuline scored one more touchdown when DeMarcus McElroy scored from two-yards out.  The touchdown was not enough for a comeback as the Falcons won 56-28.

Shannon finished the game with 225 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  Trenton Hill had six carries for 50 yards and the reception touchdown. For Fitch, it was Devin Sherwood who keeps on being consistent.  He finishes with 299 yards through the air and a touchdown.

Austintown Fitch (2-0) has momentum on their side, and look to continue that next Friday as they host the Chaney Cowboys (0-2) at Greenwood Chevrolet Austintown Falcon Stadium.  For Ursuline (1-1), they look to regroup as they head to Boardman to take on the Boardman Spartans (1-1).

BRADY AND HIS BUNCH

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last two years may have been tough for the Ursuline Fighting Irish, but it seems that a turn around is on its way.  Quarterback Brady Shannon joins this Fighting Irish edition of the YSN Player Profile.  Brady Shannon has been the quarterback now at Ursuline for the last two seasons since taking over in 2018 for an injured Glenn Griswold and has gotten the attention of not only the Valley, but now even the Akron Zips as they gave him an offer on Tuesday.

While last season may have been a disappointment for Shannon and the Irish, he still managed to complete nearly 51 percent of his passes, threw for 968 yards and had ten touchdowns in his sophomore campaign.  Last week against the Chaney Cowboys, he had three touchdowns and made one of the biggest plays that made the highlight reel, scrambling out of the pocket under pressure and finding his receiver Matthew Reardon for a big gain.  The Irish went on to win by the final of 29-6 in week one, their first season opener win since 2016.  Not only does Shannon play football, but he to plays basketball and baseball.  Due to the pandemic, the basketball season was cut short, along with the baseball season that he was waiting for.

During this edition of the Player Profile, Brady talks about week one and how they can get better, his past few seasons as an Irish, the positive leadership that happens with all of his teammates, the six game season mentality and if it changes anything and much more.  Brady Shannon and the Irish look to move to 2-0 as they face the Austintown Fitch Falcons at Stambaugh Stadium this Friday at 7pm.

IRISH FIND GOLD AGAINST CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The last time Ursuline won a season opener, they had to wait it out two hours in a double overtime win.  Tonight was a similar situation minus the overtime,  as the Irish took on the Chaney Cowboys.

Ursuline’s first big play came when Dante Walker recovered a Chaney fumble on the opening possession.  Few plays after, running back Trenton Hill burst into the end-zone six yards out making it 6-0 Irish after a failed two point conversion.

The Irish extended the score later on in the quarter as junior quarterback Brady Shannon found his favorite target in Miami Red-hawk commit Matthew Reardon making it 14-0. Shannon got his second TD of the night, lobbing it up to Dean Boyd making it 22-0, which was the last score until the weather delay.

After the delay, it was as if nothing changed.  Ursuline stopped the Cowboys offense and scored one more time and added one with a Dylan Peplowski extra point.

It was not all bad for Chaney as they did end on a good note getting a touchdown, but it was too late as the Irish got their first season opener win since 2016,  29-6.

Ursuline (1-0) will host Austintown Fitch next Friday, while Chaney (0-1) will head to Howland (0-1) to try to pounce on the Tigers.

THE EMERGENCE OF EMMA

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline softball senior Emma Ericson has slowly been developing her leadership skills. Entering her senior season Emma was ready to lead her Irish to another impressive season. Coming off a year where the Irish came so close to a district championship, everyone was hungry to get back to work.

Emma has seen her confidence grow on the field over the years. She remember a specific game her sophomore year while in the circle coach Kernan came out to talk to her. She told him she needed to stay in and finish the game, she knew she could. That’s exactly what she did. She says that is the moment when her confidence started to grow as a player. She planned to work harder than anyone this season, and lead her team by example. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has ended the 2020 season. This setback hasn’t stopped Ericson from looking to the future. She plans to attend Youngstown State after graduating from Ursuline. With new found confidence from the softball diamond, she is sure to fantastic things.

Anthony Hartwig got a chance to talk to Emma through video chat. They discussed her reaction to the season’s fate, the team’s community outreach, and much more. Get great insight into Ursuline softball with the latest Player Profile “The Emergence Of Emma”
