IRISH HOLD OFF RANGE AT HOME

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Last year these two teams played each other and now this year, it was time once again but a lot more was on the line here as the Ursuline Irish looked to go .500 after going one for one in the Salem Tournament losing to Poland and taking care of Columbiana, while South Range was just coming off their first victory to Springfield in a much needed and upset win.  This was a tight game throughout three quarters especially when it was tied in the first and then only a six possession game at halftime.  However in the end, the irish would find a lot of GRIT as they pulled away big time, finding their pot of gold and possibly a breakout 2021 preview, beating South Range 49-37 as one of the last basketball games of 2020 ended with excitement as 2021 is on the way!

Ursuline Stats

For the Irish, they were led by Jakylan Irving who made his comeback, putting up 16 points.  Brady Shannon was a force inside the paint and behind the arc once, finishing with 13 points.  Terrance Pankey kept showing that strength with ten points.  Vinny Flauto finished with eight points while both Demarcus McElroy and Will Burney combined for four points and had a bunch of steals on the defensive side of the ball.

South Range Stats

Leading South Range was their shooting star Eli Taylor who had a slight injury in this game but would comeback finishing with 14 points.  The next leading scorer was Brandon Mikos who had nine points, making a three-pointer and a couple of layups.  Nate Brown made all of his points at the free-throw line as he drew up the fouls nicely finishing with six points.  Meanwhile, Mike Patrone (3pts) Luke Crumbacher (2pts) Corey Penick (2pts) and Dylan Turvey (1pt) all combined for eight points.

Up Next

Ursuline (3-3) if there are no cancellations after the New Years will head to New Middletown to face the Springfield Tigers (6-1) Tuesday at 7pm.  South Range (1-6) as of now after the New Years is going to face Girard as Trumbull County has just started up their basketball season.  Tip-off for that game is 7pm.

RAIDERS STORM BACK ON URSULINE

YOUNGSTOWN OH-

After a nice second half turnaround against Crestview by a score of 46-39, the lady Irish were looking to move to 2-0 on the year, but would have to get past a tough South Range team led by Izzy Lamparty.  These two teams met last year with the Raiders winning 50-39, but were hungry for revenge.

The game was back and forth through four quarters of tough physical play and was tied going in the fourth at 44 during one point in the game.  Even when Izzy Lamparty was fouled out, the raiders did not give up as Bree Kohler and Gabby Lamparty got important points in the closing minutes.  Anisah Moorman and Alayna Smith played good down the paint and behind the arc for the Irish, and Rachel Fabry made some threes. In the end however, the Raiders would come away with the 52-48 victory.

Rachel Fabry finished with nine points with three made three pointers.  Both Cara McNally and Alayna Smith combined for 16 points, Freshman Lily Scott with five and Anisah Moorman with 16, scoring six points inside the paint, a three pointer, and a made free throw.

For South Range, Izzy Lamparty had 12 points going two for two on free throws, and fouled out.  Gabby Lamparty had 10 points, Bree Kohler finished with 12, Hannah Crouse with four, Mallory Vidman with two, Lexi Giles who had a big night on turnovers while scoring 10 points, and Hannah Heikkinen with two.

IRISH OPEN SEASON WITH STATEMENT WIN

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Last year was a tough go around in Mike Kerman’s first year as the Ursuline girls head coach as the team finished 9-15 and lost in the second round to Columbiana.  Meanwhile the Crestview girls were coming off of a 16-9 record and have already gotten off to a hot 2020 start beating Springfield 45-37.  On Monday, both of these teams met in what was a down to the wire game at Ursuline High School in Youngstown Ohio, the City of GRIT.

Both teams were neck and neck in the first half as the Rebels had the upper hand up 21-18.  In that half, it was mostly the rebels led by senior Krista Perry who had nine points.  For the Irish, leading them in the first half was Rachel Fabry and Anisah Moorman who had five points.

The second half especially the fourth quarter was the biggest turn around as the Irish became successful shooting free throws while Crestview had the ball slip from their hands a bunch of times either from violations or turnovers.  In the end, the Lady Irish got into the bonus and made enough free throws to hold on for a 46-39 victory over the Lady Rebels.

Ursuline Stats:

The biggest scorers for the Lady Irish were Rachel Fabry finished with 11 points, Anisah Moormen with 10 points, Alayna Smith with eight points and Cara McNally scoring seven.  Other players who played some roles in scoring were Jamie Nelson with five points, Lily Scott with a point, Emily Smith with two points and Meredith Gray with two.

Crestview Stats:

Leading for the lady rebels was none other than Krista Perry who had a high of 18 points, Emily Hill with nine points and Trinity Miller with five.

Up Next:

Ursuline (1-0) will host the lady South Range Raiders (2-1) if everything is cleared to go.  The Raiders are coming off of a big 60-33 win against Struthers.  Crestview (1-1) will host Cardinal Mooney if everyone is negative.

IRISH GET BUMPED OUT BY LAKE CATHOLIC

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Ursuline Fighting Irish and the Mentor Lake Catholic Cougars met in the regional final Saturday night at Stambaugh Stadium.  The Irish we’re down some key starters in this matchup, and Lake Catholic took full advantage of it.

The first half of the ballgame was a defensive battle, as Lake Catholic turned the ball over on downs a couple of times in Irish territory, and Ursuline couldn’t put any points on the board. Lake Catholic got the first score late in the half, as quarterback Joe Malchesky connected with receiver Charlie Vincent to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead heading into the half. Ursuline came out of the half with a long dash from Jakylan Irving as he took the opening kickoff to start the second half 90 plus yards to put the Irish on the board. Ursuline went for two after the touchdown, got it, but then a penalty brought back out senior kicker Dylan Peplowski to nail the extra point and tie the ballgame at 7.
The third quarter got ugly for the Irish after the kickoff return, as Lake Catholic scored on a 54-yard reception by Charlie Vincent, and then the Cougars defense picked off 2 passes on back to back possessions. The Cougars were able to capitalize on both turnovers, and really pull away with a 28-7 lead. Later in the second half, the Irish would turn the ball over on downs, and Joe Malchesky would run it in from 4 yards out. The Cougars would win the Regional Final 35-7, and advance to the state semifinal game. Ursuline ended the year 7-3 and had a great bounce-back season. Lake Catholic takes on Bloom-Carroll next Saturday in the state semifinal game at 7 P.M.

CAMPBELL MM MM GOOD

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- It has been one of the best seasons in high school football for the Ursuline Irish who are right now just a game away from making it to the State-SemiFinals with everything on the line, and one player has helped them the last few weeks to do that.  That player would be senior tight end and defensive end Luke Campbell.

Now, Campbell was out for the first few games of the season with injuries, but since his return, he may have been quiet, but also dangerous, racking up 20.5 tackles, and 3.5 sacks like he’s channeling his inner JJ Watt.  On the receiving side, it may not be much but he plays a big impact when it comes to blocking and last week, he got his first touchdown pass with a reception from Matthew Reardon.  With this skill that Campbell has on both sides of the ball, do not be surprised if schools have and will be looking at him.

On this episode of the YSN Ursuline Player Profile playoff edition, Ian O’Brien catches up on zoom with Luke Campbell who talks a bit about his background, the position he plays, the win against Poland last week and how he has helped the team these last few weeks, COVID capacity, someone he idolizes and many more.

The sixth seed Ursuline Fighting Irish (7-2) will take on the 12th seed Mentor Lake Catholic Cougars (8-2) Saturday at 7pm on YSN Live.  You can buy the game on the website for just $9.99.  We will see what happens as this Irish team still remembers about last season and are looking for their revenge as the high school football season is coming to a close.
