MULLEN MAKES HER CASE FOR 2023 MVP

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- The girls basketball season at YSN is officially under wraps. We have been blessed to see so much talent come through the area this season, and so many teams have shined on the big stage.  When having the discussion about most valuable player, there was one name however that echoed louder than the rest, Springfield’s Jacey Mullen.

Jacey stepped into the big lights last season when she scored her 1000th career point as a junior. This season Mullen would one up that accomplishment by becoming the program’s all time leading scorer. She has scored more points in her career than any basketball player (boys or girls) that has graced the halls of Springfield.  That should tell you right away how important she has been to Springfield athletics.  However, scoring a lot of points doesn’t automatically make you MVP.  Mullen’s ability to fill the stat sheet every night is what did the trick.  Jacey averages a double double with over 16 points per game, and over 11 rebounds per game.  Mullen shoots 52% from the floor, and 70% from the line. She got to the free throw line more than anybody on the team finishing the season with 125 free throw attempts. To cap off her career, Mullen proved that she belonged on the biggest stage in high school basketball. Despite dropping their game to Toledo Christian, Mullen was the only player in the game to finish with a double double scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

We at YSN want to congratulate Jacey and the Tigers on a wonderful season.  We are honored to announce that Jacey Mullen is our 2023 Most Valuable Player.

MULLEN AND BRUNGARD LEAD THE WAY FOR THE TIGERS

LOWELLVILLE, OH- The Springfield Tigers and the Lowellville Rockets met on Thursday night in MVAC play. The Tigers came out strong to start the ballgame, and kept that lead the entire way to come out victorious by 23.

Springfield started the first quarter on a 6-0 run, until the Rockets started to come alive from three point range knocking down two three’s from Francesca Lellio and Averi Shumaker. Springfield senior Jacey Mullen scored 10 out of the 16 first quarter points to lead by 10, 16-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Rockets 18-9 to lead 34-15 at the half.

In the second half, the Tigers put on cruise control and allowed some jv members of the team to get in the fourth quarter. The Tigers improved to 15-2 with a 62-39 victory. The Rockets are now 7-10 on the campaign and will host Crestview on Saturday afternoon.

Mullen led the Tigers with 22 points, while Jameka Brungard dominated the offensive glass all night long to score 16 points on the night. The Rockets were led by Francesca Lellio who scored 12 points while knocking down 2 three-pointers. Behind Lellio was Savannah Procick and Serinna Tych who added 6 points.

JACEY IS MUST SEE

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield girls basketball is right in the middle of a program turnaround.  In 2014, the Tigers had 21 wins, but from then until last season they never had more than 13 wins.  However that all changed last season when the Tigers went for 21 wins, and got themselves a District Championship trophy.  One of the big reasons for the turnaround on the floor is the emergence of senior Jacey Mullen.  Over the last two season in particular, Mullens has become one of the most feared players in the area.  As a player what makes her the most lethal is her ability to dominate inside, and also play on the perimeter.  That versatility makes it simple for head coach John Matisi to game plan against the opponent’s weakness.  When she is going good, Jacey is near impossible to stop. She has a size and strength advantage over nearly everyone that tries to defend her.

Jacey is averaging 17 points per game this season for the Tigers which is the most on the team. But it goes beyond scoring, because Mullen averages a double double with 11 rebounds per contest as well.  6.6 of the those rebounds come on the offensive side giving the Tigers multiple opportunities to score.  She also averages 2.5 assists per game proving that she can make that extra pass to an open shooter.

Mullen took the time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig this week to talk about the growth of her career. She talks about the program’s turnaround, her ability to gain confidence as a leader, and much more. Check out the latest Springfield Girls Basketball Player Profile only on YSN.

JACEY WORTH MORE THAN A PENNY

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Scoring 1000 points in a career is a tremendous accomplishment no matter when you do it. But, to be able to do it as a junior is rare. That is exactly what Springfield junior Jacey Mullen has done this session.

The Tiger standout leads the team in multiple statistical categories this season. Jacey has been asked to not just be a points leader this season though, but an emotional and energetic leader on the floor as well. She has picked up great leadership skills along the way that help her take this roster full of young talent.

This season the Tigers have multiple ways that they can beat you and stay balanced. The ability to stay balanced and trust her teammates has taken a ton of pressure off of Jacey’s shoulders. It’s a perfect time to lighten her stress, as school gets harder and time management becomes more, and more important.

Jacey took the time to talk to Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell this week to talk about her season. They discuss scoring 1000 points, being a leader, and so much more.  Tiger fans get ready for tournament time with this exclusive interview with Jacey Mullen.

SPRINGFIELD BATTLES TO BEAT CATS

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield has had an up and down 2020 season, after starting the season at 2-1, the Tigers lost 3 in a row. Then, the Tigers got back in the win column setting up the opportunity to getting back to .500 on Monday against Struthers. The Tigers took advantage of that opportunity and took away a four set victory (25-21 21-25 26-24 25-22).

Min set 1 the Tigers stretched a lead to five early. The Wildcats fought hard to keep them within striking distance, but never seemed to be able to take that next step to take a lead. In fact, the for a large portion of the set, the Tigers lead never went over four, and it never went under three. Four would be the final point differential as the Tigers took set 1 25-21.

Struthers responded well in set two. They jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Tigers made it close and set two was just as competitive as set one. The power of Wildcat senior Jessica Hughes who had her best set in set two. The Wildcats would be the one to take a set by four points this time 25-21.

The Wildcats looked like they had control of the third set. They led late 23-19. But the Tigers would not stop. Some good serving by Jacey Mullen got the Tigers to come back and tie it at 24-24. Then Springfield won the final two points to escape with the set 26-24.

The final set was much like the first. The Tigers saw a lead almost the whole way, but the Wildcats were persistent and refused to let them run away with it. The Tigers got the clutch points down the stretch to win 25-22.
