IN THEIR OWN WORDS: JENNA RICCARDO

By Jenna Riccardo

For the last four years, I have watched as the seniors walked through our school for the last time during their senior walk. There was always a mix of emotions shown on their faces. Some shed tears because it was over, others celebrated because it was the start of the next chapter of their lives. Watching this each year, I was uncertain of how I would feel when it was my turn. I soon found that I couldn’t wait for my senior year of high school to arrive so that I could celebrate my hard work and begin to move on with the next chapter of my life.

Finally, the time arrived. Our senior year started as expected and we made memories at football and basketball games, wrestling matches, and homecoming dances. These are all memories that we will be able to look back on, but as senior year comes to an end, we were anxiously awaiting prom, our senior trip, and graduation. However, on March 12th we learned that our year would not continue as we had envisioned. Instead, we left the school without knowing if we would return and finish making the memories we had anticipated. This year was supposed to be about the celebration of the class of 2020, a year to remember all the hard work that we have put into schooling for the past thirteen years, but instead of getting our senior walk, we left our school with the year cut short.

Missing out on events such as prom and our senior trip is not as devastating to me as it may be to other high school seniors. Personally, I am thankful that I was able to complete my senior basketball season, as this was most important to me. While I am saddened that the All-Star games I was selected to play in have all been canceled, my heart hurts for those who were not able to complete their postseason in the winter state tournaments or compete in a spring sport. I could never imagine not finishing the last season of my high school career.

Although all of these things are important to seniors and are considered a right of passage, there are far greater losses than missing out on these events. By canceling or postponing these events, we are saving the lives of millions of people across the United States. While I am saddened by the sudden change of events, I am now more focused on my future and hope that we can return to living our normal lives soon.

Sitting at home, the days seem to pass by in slow motion. This was not how senior year was supposed to end for the class of 2020. The changes that we have had to undergo are some of the biggest changes many of us have ever faced. I believe that this will make us stronger and be able to overcome any obstacle that we encounter. No matter who you are or what you are missing out on during this time, I think it is most important to be there for the ones you love and support to those around you.

To the Class of 2020: Remember that this is still our year, it is just ending differently than we had expected. Wherever your path may lead you, hold on to the memories you’ve made and make the best of the situation that we are in.

Love,

LADY REBELS BOUNCE BEAVERS

COLUMBIANA, OH- The Crestview Lady Rebel Basketball team got their season started with a win Wednesday night over Beaver Local 54-46.

In the first half, it seemed as though Beaver Local was going to control the pace of play. They used their speed in transition to take advantage of easy basket opportunities. While Crestview hung around by slowing the game down and being deliberate on offense. Beaver Local took a four-point lead into the break.

In the third quarter, the Beavers kept dominating with the transition. Live ball turnovers would turn into points. They built up a 38-30 lead. Then the Rebels finally started to find their stride. With a little help from the perimeter shooting the Rebels were able to jump out to an 11-0 run and take a 41-38 lead. After the teams traded a trio of threes back and forth, the game was tied at 44-44. The Rebels ended the game on a strong 10-2 run to bring home the opening night victory 54-46.

Leading the way for the Rebels was Tanner Hoffer who finished with a double-double 17 points 11 rebounds. Krista Perry also finished with a double-double totaling 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Beaver Local was led by Jenna Riccardo with a game-high 22 points and 6 rebounds. Madison Cline was also in double figures with 10.

Crestview will return to action Monday night as they travel to Girard. Beaver Local will get back on the court Thursday as they host East Liverpool.

BIG DOGS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

With over 410,000 votes during the final poll, the first-ever Baird Brothers/YSN Big Dogs of the Valley Players of the Year were awarded during intermission of the YSN All-Star Game last night.  The award was based on three separate pieces of data which were weighted and scored.

For the girls, Beaver Local’s Jenna Riccardo will wear the crown for 2019.  Riccardo won the Week 1 vote for BDOV, and was nominated 11 out of the 12 weeks the contest was held.  In only her junior season, Jenna became the all-time leading scorer for the Beavers.  She also averaged a double-double this year with 23 points, and 13.3 rebounds per game alongside her 2.6 steals and nearly two blocks to boot.  She also was recognized for being the Columbiana County player of the year, and most recently was named third-team All-Ohio.

Taking home the award for the guys is Lisbon Senior, Justin Sweeney.  A young man who’s battled through many obstacles just to be on the court this season.  However, when he stepped back on the floor, he owned it.  After returning to the court less than 3 months after reconstructive knee surgery, Justin came back to average 21 points per game with 8 rebounds in 2019 while becoming Lisbon’s All-Time Leading Scorer.  Sweeney took home the Week 4 honors for BDOV, and had nominations in each week thereafter.  Earlier this week, Justin was named to the Division IV All-Ohio team.

Congratulations to both Jenna and Justin from all of us at YSN, and on behalf of Baird Brothers.  An extraordinary season for both players, and well-deserved accomplishments this season from many outlets.

BEAVERS BURN CAMBRIDGE LATE, ADVANCE TO NEXT ROUND

EAST LIVERPOOL, OH- The late Jim Valvano once described NCAA basketball tournament as ‘survive & advance’ in terms of proceeding through the tournament. This phrase accurately describes the Beaver Local Girls Basketball Team.

After trailing for most of the game, the Beavers fought hard to earn a come from behind 45-44 over Cambridge in the East District opening round OHSAA Tournament game on Monday Night.  With a team dominated by underclassmen, it was Senior Madison Ours that provided the Beavers with the winning points off of a 3 point field goal with 35 seconds remaining. That was the only points scored by Ours the entire game.  ‘I thought I overshot the ball’ Ours said after the game. ‘I heard someone yell not to shoot it right when I let it go. I think Coach (Stephanie Coie) wanted the ball to be passed inside.’  Ours went on to say ‘That was the biggest shot I’ve ever made. If that shot doesn’t go in, we go home.’

Junior Jenna Riccardo, who became the school’s all-time leading scorer last week, lead the Beavers with 21 points, but only 8 points came in the first half. Riccardo said after the game the defense Cambridge played in the first half created problems for her & her team during the first half.  ‘They (Cambridge) switched from a 2-2 zone to a 1-3-1 zone & we couldn’t score” Riccardo said.

The Beavers were able to overcome a 19-14 halftime deficit to take a 35-34 lead after 3 quarters. Riccardo went to the free throw line with 1:33 remaining in the 4th quarter down 43-42 with a chance to either give her team the lead. She missed both free throws.  ‘I wasn’t nervous’ Riccardo told me after the game. ‘I just didn’t get my legs into either free throw & that’s why both hit the front of the rim.’

After Alexis Wilkinson made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Bobcats a 44-42 lead, it was Ours that gave her team the lead that the Beavers never surrendered. Taylar Slaughter had the ball for Cambridge in the closing seconds but was called for traveling with 4 seconds left. Elizabeth Kolkowski was immediately fouled on the Beavers next possession but missed the front end of a 1 in 1. Alyssa Ball of Cambridge was unable to secure the ball after touching it as Beaver Local Freshman Jensen Britt took control & held the ball in the near corner as time expired, securing the win.

Also contributing to the Beaver Local victory was Freshman Elizabeth Kolkowski with 10 points & 4 rebounds, Junior Riley Britt with 3 points & 4 steals, & Freshman Jensen Britt with 4 points & 2 rebounds.

The Beavers, the 12 seed in the East District, improve to 14-8. They advance to play against the 3 seed Zanesville Maysville Panthers Wednesday Night at 7 PM. Maysville finished their regular season with a record of 16-5.

The Cambridge Bobcats, the 15 seed in the East District, were lead by Taylar Slaughter with 30 points, including 5 shots from beyond the 3 point line. Their season concludes with a 6-16 record.
