POLAND STAYS AHEAD STAYS PERFECT WINS DISTRICT CROWN

Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, Poland still held off Ursuline for a 7-6 victory on Thursday and claiming the Division II Youngstown District Champiomship. Ursuline scored three runs in the failed comeback on a double by  Maris Barbato, a double by Destiny Goodnight, and a double by Gia Caldrone.

The Bulldogs pulled away for good with four runs in the second inning.  Brooke Bobbey drew a walk, scoring one run and Cami Lattanzio doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring three runs.

Ursuline scored three runs in the sixth inning.  The big inning  came thanks to doubles by Barbato, Goodnight, and Caldrone.

Ashley Wire led the Bulldogs to victory in the circle. She went seven innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and striking out five.

Emily Holland took the loss for Ursuline. She allowed four hits and three runs over three and a third innings, striking out one.

Lattanzio went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Poland in hits.  The Bulldogs were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Ally Nittoli made the most plays with  nine.

Ursuline tallied ten hits.  Caldrone, Goodnight, Barbato, Julia Nutter, and Alyssa Sheely all managed multiple hits for the Irish

Poland advances to play Mogadore in the regional semifinals at Akron Firestone Stadium on Wednesday at 5:00.

HUBBARD EMBRACES UNDERDOG, STUNS POLAND

POLAND, OH- Hubbard won an epic slugfest over Poland, 11-10, as the seventh-seeded Eagles upset the No. 2 Bulldogs in Division II Sectional bracket final.

Hubbard led 4-0 before the Bulldogs rallied for a 5-4 lead in the third inning. The Eagles quickly responded with a five-run fourth, highlighted by Jimmy Palumbo’s three-run homer (one of three home runs in the game), to take 9-5 lead.

It didn’t last long. Poland scored four times in the bottom of the fourth, thanks in part to a three-run shot by Jeremy Castro, to knot the game at 9. Hubbard took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring a run on a Lukas Mosora single. The Eagles added to the lead with a homer by Evan Jarvis in the sixth, and the insurance run proved big when Poland pulled within 11-10.

Lukas Mosora earned the victory when he pitched the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the win, inducing a groundout from Poland’s Braeden O’Shaughnessy with a man on first to end the game.

Alex Barth was credited the loss, allowing five hits and two runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three.

Hubbard (17-12) advances to the district semifinal for the first time since 2010, with the Eagles playing Niles at 5 p.m. Monday at Cene Park.

POLAND RACES PAST MOONEY ON ROUTE TO TITLE GAME

Poland advanced to the Youngstown District Championship game on Tuesday with a 8-2 win over Mooney.

Poland got things started in the first inning when Ashley Wire doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

The Bulldogs tallied four runs in the third inning.  Poland’s big inning was driven by doubles by Lauren Sienkiewicz and Abby Farber and a single by Tori Modarelli.

Wire pitched Poland to victory. She allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out two and walking one.

Alaina Francis took the loss for Cardinal Mooney. She lasted six innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out four.

Poland tallied ten hits in the game.  Wire, Farber, and Cami Lattanzio each racked up multiple hits.  Lattanzio, Farber, and Wire all had two hits to lead the Bulldogs.

Poland advances to play Ursuline in the Youngstown District Championship on Thursday night at 4:00 at the YSU Softball Complex.

LADY BULLDOGS DROP NEWTON FALLS

POLAND, OH- It wasn’t tournament play, but the Lady Bulldogs of Poland kept the same intensity as Poland coasted to an easy victory over Newton Falls 10-2 on Saturday.

In the second inning, Poland got their offense started. Abby Farber singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.  The Lady Dogs put up five runs in the fifth inning. Poland’s big bats were led by Cami LattanzioAlly NittoliLauren Sienkiewicz, and Farber, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Brooke Bobbey led Poland to victory on the rubber. She lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three.

Tara Backherms took the loss for Newton Falls. She surrendered three runs on four hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one.

Poland tallied 12 hits on the day. SienkiewiczAshley WireFarberBobbey, and Nittoli each managed multiple hits for the Lady Bulldogs. NittoliBobbeyFarberWire, and Sienkiewicz each collected two hits to lead PolandThe Lady Bulldogs tore up the base paths, as four players stole at least two bases. Wire led the way with five.

SPARTANS TOO MUCH FOR POLAND

BOARDMAN, OH- The Poland Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker on Friday. The Bulldogs fell to Boardman 4-3 on the final play of the game. The game was tied at three with Boardman batting in the bottom of the seventh when Charlie Davis singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring the game-winner.

Travis Harvey led the Boardman to victory on the hill. He surrendered one run on two hits over one inning, striking out one and walking one.  Cam Kreps started the game for Boardman. He allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out 12 and walking one

Jared Knight took the loss for Poland. He allowed eight hits and four runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.

Braeden O’Shaughnessy led the Bulldogs with two hits in three at-bats.  Poland didn’t commit a single error in the field. Andrew Testa had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.

Davis went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Boardman in hits. Boardman was clean on defense as well, Connor Miller had the most chances in the field with 12.

POLAND TAKES FLIGHT, ELIMINATE STRUTHERS

POLAND, OH- Poland Senior, Ashley Wire had all the right stuff on Wednesday for Poland, allowing zero runs and besting Struthers by a score of 17-0.

Poland fired up the offense in the first inning. Lauren Sienkiewicz drove in one when she singled.  The Lady Bulldogs added six runs in the third inning. The offensive firepower by Poland was led by WireAlly Nittoli, and Justine Carney, all knocking in runs in the inning.

A single by Mary Bayus in the first inning was a positive for Struthers.

Wire led the Poland to victory in the pitcher’s circle. She went five innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out five and walking zero.

Nicolina Pezzone took the loss for Struthers. She surrendered 17 runs on 17 hits over four innings, striking out two.

The Lady Dogs socked one home run on the day. Nittoli went for the long ball in the third.

BULLDOGS HAVE MERCY ON STRUTHERS

POLAND, OH- The Struthers Wildcats watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in an 11-1 loss to Poland on Tuesday. Poland Seminary scored on a single by MJ Farber and a passed ball during Andrew Testa‘s at-bat in the first inning.

Poland scored four runs in the sixth inning. Tallon PriceMason McCurdyAlex Barth, and Braeden O’Shaughnessy all drove in runs in the frame.

Barth was credited with the victory for Poland Seminary. He lasted six innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out three and walking zero.

Anthony Monaco took the loss for Struthers. He lasted four innings, allowing six hits and seven runs while striking out three.

Struthers totaled six hits in the game. JD Hall and Rob Tomko all collected multiple hits for the Wildcats. Tomko and Hall each collected two hits to lead the team.

Poland racked up ten hits. O’ShaughnessyPrice, and Farber each had multiple hits for Poland Seminary.

WIRE TO WIRE- POLAND WALKS OFF LABRAE

POLAND, OH- Poland seized victory in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off triple at the end of the game to topple LaBrae. The game was tied at two with the Lady Bulldogs batting in the bottom of the seventh when Ashley Wire tripled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring three runs.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Wire struck out three, while Gordan sat down six.

Wire was credited with the victory for Poland. She lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one.

Gordan took the loss for LaBrae. She allowed nine hits and five runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out six.

Poland collected nine hits on the day. Abby Farber and Wire all managed multiple hits for the Lady Dogs. Farber led the team with three hits in three at-bats.

Sisler went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead LaBrae in hits. LaBrae was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error.

POLAND FEASTS WITH 15 HITS, FLEX PAST STRUTHERS

STRUTHERS, OH- Poland Seminary scored six runs in the second on its way to a 9-2 victory over Struthers on Monday. The rally was led by triples by Braeden O’Shaughnessy and Mj Farber, a single by Alex Barth, a groundout by Jake Bacon, and a double by Ian Lu.

Braden Olson took the win for Poland. He lasted four innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out seven and walking zero. Mike Kushner threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Rob Tomko took the loss for Struthers. He allowed 12 hits and nine runs over five innings, striking out four.

The Bulldogs racked up 15 hits. LuFarber, and Olson all managed multiple hits for PolandFarber and Lu each managed three hits to lead the team.

Jared Laczko led Struthers with two hits in three at-bats. Struthers didn’t commit a single error in the field. Hunter Stellato had six chances in the field, the most on the team.

POLAND SHUTS DOWN STRUTHERS

POLAND, OH- Ashley Wire didn’t allow a single run as Poland defeated Struthers 10-0 on Monday. Wire allowed just five hits.

Poland put up four runs in the sixth inning.  The offensive firepower by the Bulldogs were led by Cami Lattanzio, Ally Nittoli, and Lauren Sienkiewicz, all knocking in runs in the inning.

One bright spot for Struthers was a single by Tessa Stocker in the third inning.

Wire was the winning pitcher for Poland. She allowed five hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Nicolina Pezzone took the loss for Struthers. She surrendered ten runs on ten hits over five and a third innings, striking out two.

The Bulldogs totaled ten hits in the game.  Lattanzio and Wire each collected multiple hits for Poland.  Lattanzio led the offense with three hits in four at bats.  The Bulldogs didn’t commit a single error in the field. Lattanzio had  ten chances in the field, the most on the team.

Stocker went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Struthers in hits.
