RAIDERS KEEP POLAND AT BAY
/in Volleyball/by Anthony HartwigThe South Range volleyball team won a thrilling four-set match over Poland. (25-23 25-22 22-25 25-21)
In the first set, the two teams went back and forth as the Bulldogs used excellent back row defense to stay close to the Raiders. However, with setpoint and Poland rallying it was senior Anna Primavera coming up the set clinching kill.
The second set unfolded much like the first. Both teams were clawing and fighting to keep balls alive which made extra long rallies impossible. Poland saw their biggest lead of the evening slip away, and the Raiders snuck out with a set two win.
It seemed with a 2-0 advantage the Raiders would have all the momentum in set three, but that was not the case. The Raiders had their worst hitting set with an attack percentage of .031. Poland took full advantage of this and captured a thrilling third set forcing a fourth.
Poland came out strong in set number four with a 6-0 rally. The Raiders found their wag back, however, and before the Bulldogs could blink it was tired at 9-9. Like the sets before them, this one went back and forth. Izzy Lamparty put the match away with a monster kill.
Anna Primavera had 12 kills on the night for the Raiders adding 8!digs, and 2 aces. Izzy Lamparty had 8 kills. Emily Irons gathered 29 assists, 3 kills, and 3 digs. Reagan Irons led the team in digs with 9.
Raiders return to action Tuesday as they travel to Lakeview.
BOARDMAN TAKES 11U DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT FROM POLAND
/in Baseball/by YSN StaffBOARDMAN, OH- All eyes were on the Field of Dreams in Boardman on Wednesday, and rightfully so with what was about to transpire.
After starting out on fire and to the tune of a 10-1 lead, Boardman had to battle some adversity late in the ballgame against Poland’s finest. The Poland 11U All-Stars could have easily rolled over and let their opponents finish their season without a fight, but that was hardly the case. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
Boardman took an 8-0 lead through the first two innings courtesy of offensive power from Anthony Groner and Collin Resetar. Groner also started the game on the hill for the Boardman All-Stars.
Dylan Kelty was the tough-luck loser of the ball game for Poland and was backed up in relief by Owen McKenzie.
Poland scored 8 unanswered runs to bring the game within one run in the final frame, but couldn’t find the magic tying run, and fall to the final of 10-9.
With the victory, Boardman moves on to play in Cambridge for the State Tournament that begins July 27th.

TOUGH LUCK LOSS ENDS POLAND’S SEASON AT 29-1
/in Softball/by YSN StaffAKRON, OH- Four runs in the first inning set the tone for Jonathan Alder in the OHSAA State Semi’s. The Poland Lady Bulldogs had been comeback queens up until this point, but Adler had just enough defense to cage the Bulldogs and walk away 6-3 winners on Thursday.
Jonathan Alder scored on a home run by Jillian Jakse, a single by Cierra Clark, and a single by Caitlin Craig in the first inning, and took a commanding 4-0 lead.
Poland didn’t blink.
They responded with a pair of runs courtesy of an Ally Nittoli single to right, and Jackie Grisdale’s ground out to the pitcher.
Marlee Jacobs led the Jonathan Alder to victory on the rubber. She surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out two. April Wagner threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Ashley Wire took the loss for Poland. She lasted the entirety of seven innings, allowing eight hits and six runs.
Jackie Grisdale went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Poland in hits.
Jacobs led Jonathan Alder with two hits in three at bats. Jonathan Alder didn’t commit a single error in the field. Kelsey Mcdonald had nine chances in the field, the most on the team.
Congratulations to Poland on an outstanding season as they finish 29-1 on the year. Our best wishes, and more congratulations to the seniors for the Lady Bulldogs who will serve as a foundation for the future of Poland Softball.
