TIGERS COMPLETE STEP ONE

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Tournament runs are done one step at a time. If you look beyond that, you open yourself up to an upset. Springfield was locked in and focused in their first step Tuesday night against Crestwood. The Tigers dominated their way to a 55-18 win.

Alex Rothwell put together an awesome night and led the Tigers with 19 points. Jake Joyce continued to look impressive adding 11 to the cause. Beau Brungard was also in double figures with 10.

Springfield advances to the sectional finals on Friday. The Tigers will host East Palestine with a trip to districts on the line. Tip is set for 7:00.

CAMPBELL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH ANOTHER WIN

CAMPBELL OH- The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils have been a team that had a lot of questions to answer at the beginning of the season. Leaving people curious about how far they can go? How will they compete in the tough MVAC Gray Division?

Those questions were answered one after another, with Campbell compiling a perfect 13-0 conference record, heading into both the final conference and regular season game Friday against Newton Falls.

The last time these two teams locked horns was on Friday, February 11th only a week prior to their second matchup. The Tigers were feeling it at home, pushing Campbell to the limit that night, as The Red Devils squeaked by with a narrow 55-53 victory.

Having already clinched The MVAC Championship for the first time in 8 years, Campbell was looking to end the year perfect in their conference while sharpening their teeth for the tournament.

Newton Falls looked to take away a lot of what Campbell does best on offense, much like they did in their first encounter. In fact, The Tigers were only the second team to hold Campbell under 60 points this season.

With a great mind like Coach Sembach, Newton Falls had a great defensive gameplan, one that forced the ball out of Kevin Moore’s hands a ton. This made Campbell adjust to depend on other scoring options.

Throughout all four quarters, Newton Falls made it difficult for Campbell to score, as they held The Red Devils down to just 56 points of offense in the game. Making The Tigers the only team to hold Campbell under 60 points twice this season.

However, Campbell used a balanced scoring approach, one that saw four players pitch in with 9+ points of offense on the evening. Pair that with a Red Devil Defense that had a rocking crowd behind them, and Campbell was able to pull off the 56-37 victory over Newton Falls.

Stats:

Kevin Moore: 12 PTS, 7 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK.

Kayvon Moore: 11 PTS, 3 REB, 1 STL, 4/7 FG (57%).

Xavion Leonard: 10 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 3 STL, 2 BLK.

Christian James (C.J.):  9 PTS, 6 REB, 2 AST, 3/5 3-PT FG (60%)

The win recorded #21 in the regular season for Campbell, the most in the regular season in school history. It also ties the record for most wins in a season (including postseason).

The senior leaders of Campbell had a chance to shine, as we got a chance to catch up with every senior of this historic team!

Campbell will waste little time going for historic win #22, as in Division 3’s Warren District, The #2 Red Devils will take on the winner of #18 Rootstown @ #13 Columbiana. That game will take place in Campbell and will occur on Friday, February 25th and can be found on YSN!

TIGERS WASTE NO TIME IN THEIR SECTIONAL FINAL

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Springfield earned their way to a 2 seed in the district with a fantastic regular season. As the second seed they get the benefit of being the top seed in their own district bracket. Sometimes that gives you some big mismatches in the early rounds. That was the case Saturdays as Springfield wasted little time winning a sectional title with a 62-7 win over Lordstown.

The Tigers had 10 players get themselves in the stat book. They were led by Jacey Mullen with 13 points. Kendall Maughan was also in double figures with 10. Peyton Klem contributed 9.

Springfiekd moves on to the Mineral Ridge district semifinal where they will match up with Lisbon. That game is slated for 6:00 at Mineral Ridge.

CAMPBELL WINS ON A MONUMENTAL NIGHT

CAMPBELL OH- On a Tuesday late in the regular season for boys basketball, two conference rivals in The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils and The LaBrae Vikings did battle.

The last time the two faced off? Back on January 28th in Leavittsburg, where The Vikings pushed Campbell to overtime.

The Red Devils came away victors 76-68 on that day, building all the excitement for round 2 of this matchup.

With the heightened drama of clinching an outright MVAC Gray Championship for Campbell, it was a perfect atmosphere for the crowd.

Campbell wasted little time before jumping ahead of LaBrae 9-0 with an early run out of the gate! The Red Devils offense continued to click throughout the quarter, as they went into the second leading 21-13.

In the second, Campbell moved the ball efficiently enough to keep pace with the offense set in the first. Kevin Moore splashed home a three late in the second quarter to become just the third 1000 point scorer in Campbell history.

That offense took Campbell into halftime holding a 44-19 lead over LaBrae.

The Vikings trimmed the lead a bit in the third quarter, with some offensive buckets from Aidan Stephens, who had 12 points on the night. However, The Red Devils never surrendered the lead, as they hit their scoring average of 75 points a game on the season.

Walking away the victors in another conference game, the 75-54 win over LaBrae, clinched the first conference championship in eight years for The Red Devils!

The win was also #20 on the regular season which, unofficially, is the most wins in a regular season in Campbell history as well!

The Rockin Red Devils had a lot to celebrate Tuesday night, to the tune of a milestone, a conference championship, a record and a win!

Both teams in action again this week, as Campbell (20-1) hosts Newton Falls (11-9) on Friday, February 18th. Also on Friday, LaBrae (13-4) has a chance to beat the unbeaten Springfield Tigers (21-0).

CAMPBELL ONE WIN AWAY FROM CONFERENCE CROWN

CAMPBELL OH- A big game inside The MVAC Gray Division took place on Tuesday night. #1 Campbell-Memorial Red Devils hosted #5 Liberty for their second matchup with The Leopards this year.

The first time these two squared off was back on January 11th. The Red Devils snuck away with a road victory that day 61-59.

However, other than LaBrae, Liberty was the only conference team to challenge Campbell this year. Going into Tuesday night, much of the same was expected in round two of Liberty vs. Campbell.

Both teams started off strong defensively, with points being at a premium in the first quarter. Campbell took a lead late in the first quarter, and extended it to 15-11 with a Deshaun Will buzzer-beater three to end the 1st.

The lead Campbell had was one that they held throughout the first half. Liberty never faltered, staying within striking distance of The Red Devils at all times. A Jameer Weaver bucket to beat the halftime buzzer extended The Devils lead to ten points 34-24 at halftime.

The Leopards came out of the third quarter with a fury. Backed by some impressive scoring by senior D’Andre Venters. Including some great passing by Venters, he was a spark plug to start the second half for Liberty.

Liberty outscored Campbell 23-10 in the third to take a 47-44 lead over The Red Devils after three. The spark ran out of gas however, as The Leopards only scored 10 points in the fourth to flip the script, as Campbell won the fourth quarter 23-10 and won the game 67-57.

Kevin Moore had another 20+ point performance as he continues to inch his way to the 1000 point milestone. D’Andre Venters shined for Liberty, scoring 23 points on the night, as he haunted The Red Devil defense.

Campbell had balanced scoring on the night, with all five starters contributing eight or more points of offense. In all those contributions, it was Xavion Leonards stat line that stood out the most!

Xavion Leonard: 16 PTS  7 REB  5 AST  3 STL  4 BLK  8/15 FG (53%)

Contributing in multiple areas of the game, Leonard’s 16 points were second highest on the team for the night. The 5 assists and 4 blocks lead the team, while 7 rebounds were tied for the team lead with Kevin Moore.

Being present in the five major stat categories in basketball was more than enough to earn Xavion Leonard YSNs Player of The Game!

The win for Campbell (18-1) gives them a perfect 11-0 record in the conference. For Liberty (13-5) they will fall to 9-2 in conference play. The win for The Red Devils leaves them just one win away from at least a shar of The MVAC Gray Crown!

#5 Liberty (13-5) will host Champion (3-15) on Thursday, February 10th.

#1 Campbell (18-1) will play their final road game of the regular season, as they travel to Newton Falls (10-7) on Friday, February 11th in their first battle with The Tigers.

CAMPBELL MAKES ENOUGH PLAYS DOWN THE STRETCH

LIBERTY, OH – Coming into Tuesday night’s matchup between Liberty and Campbell, both teams knew that it would come down to who can get the edge over the other when they needed it the most. Liberty attacked the rim early and often in the first half, but Campbell made defensive adjustments towards the second half which forced Liberty to slow down their attack and miss key shots that may have won them the game. Campbell was able to use that momentum boost from their defense, along with depth scoring at the right time to come out on top over Liberty, 61-59.

For Campbell, Kevin Moore led the way with a game-high 24 points on the night for the Red Devils.

For Liberty, D’Andre Venters led the way with 22 points on the night. Behind him was  Kalan Turner who contributed 17 points.

Campbell will be back in action next Tuesday, January 18th as they will travel to Niles. Liberty will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Champion. Don’t miss it on YSN!

REBELS ARE REALLY ROLLING NOW

CAMPBELL, OH – The Crestview Lady Rebels came into Campbell Monday night looking for their fourth win of the season. Crestview was able to earn that fourth win, in dominating fashion behind key scoring and a big fourth quarter as they came out on top against the Lady Red Devils, 39-18.

For the Lady Rebels, Luvrain Gaskins led the team with 13 points. Behind her was Emily Hill who added 11. And Katie Lissi also contributed 5 points on the night.

Crestview will move on to host Newton Falls on Tuesday, January 4th. And Campbell will be back in action on Thursday, January 6th as they travel to Liberty to take on the Leopards. Don’t miss it on YSN!

CAMPBELL BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH NICK CANTERINO

CAMPBELL OH- The red hot, Rocking Red Devils of Campbell are coming off, yet another game in which they scored 80+ points of offense on the night!

This time, their total was 88, as a part of the 88-58 victory against Western Reserve on December 23rd.

Making it the fifth time in just eight games in which The Red Devils accomplished the feat of 80 or more points on offense.

Campbell hopes the winter break has little effect in cooling them off, as they have a conference game lined up with The Champion Flashes on Tuesday, January 4th.

As New Year’s rapidly approaches, The Red Devils Resolution? Keep the party Rocking!

CAMPBELL RUNS THE NIGHT

CAMPBELL OH- The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils are off to an undefeated start this season. All while already topping their win total from last year.

This time, The Jackson Milton Blue Jays entered The Red Devil gym to challenge this revamped Campbell lineup.

Coming off a dramatic win over The Heartland Christian Lions, The Blue Jays were looking to continue their string of beating undefeated teams.

Jackson Milton kept it close in the first quarter, like most teams against The Red Devils. As Campbell held just a 16-10 lead after one quarter.

However, The Rocking Red Devils show up fashionably late to the party, as the second quarter has been a stronghold for Campbell in early season play.

Outscoring The Blue Jays 24-9 in the second, and holding a 40-19 lead after the first half.

The hot shooting half turned into a hot shooting night, as The Red Devils were simply on fire from all over the floor. Winning the third quarter 27-9 and extending the lead to 67-28 after three quarters.

Kevin Moore was a big factor in his return to the lineup after missing the last contest against Valley Christian. Putting up a smooth 20 points in his return.

Moore was just one of the many Red Devils to put up double digits in the scoring column. As Xavion Leonard had a 17 point performance, all while dominating the boards.

Luciano was another bright spot in The Campbell lineup. As the senior had 14 points on an efficient shooting night, including a buzzer beater to end the third. An exclamation point on the game for Campbell.

The win has put #4 Campbell at 4-0 on the season, while The Blue Jays drop to 1-2.

Both teams coincidentally will matchup with The Lowellville Rockets next. As The Blue Jays will visit The Rockets Tuesday, December 14th. Before that, Lowellville will invade a bigger rocket, with their matchup with Campbell scheduled for Sunday, December 12th at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland!

Both games will be live on YSN!
