PANKEY SCORES 1,000 CAREER POINTS IN WIN OVER CRUSADERS

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- It was a special night for Ursuline senior Terrance Pankey after he eclipsed 1,000 career points in the win over Canton Central Catholic. Pankey led the Irish with 20 points with 15 of the 20 points coming in the second half. The Irish had the lead from start to finish in a 57-50 victory to improve to 4-1.

The Irish came out with a defensive mindset holding the Crusaders to just six points. The Irish scored 32 points in the first half to have the lead heading into the halftime up 32-23. In the second half, the Crusaders pushed a late comeback but fell short by 7 points. The magical moment for Terrance Pankey occured late in the fourth quarter when he made a free throw to score 1,000 career points. We were able to catch up with Pankey after the incredible moment:

Behind Pankey was Vinny Flauto who scored 14 points, while knocking down four three-pointers. Geno Lucente also scored 9 points, with all nine coming in the first half. The Irish improve to 4-1 on the season and will travel to Salem on Friday night.

CARDINALS COME BACK TO BEAT URSULINE 58-50

CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals hosted the Ursuline Irish in a non-conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night. These two programs are atop the best in the district this season in division two. The Irish had a comfortable lead in the first half, but a late spark by Canfield pushed them past the Irish by a final of 58-50.

In the first quarter, Ursuline senior shooting guard Vinny Flauto had four three pointers to score 12 of the Ursuline 18 points. The Irish and the Cardinals went back and forth in the second quarter to head to the locker room with Ursuline leading 30-25. In the third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Irish 23-11 with Canfield junior guard Tony Russo scoring 10 points to take a 48-41 lead at the end of three quarters. Canfield clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter to hold the Irish to just nine total points in the final eight minutes. The Cardinals rallied back to win 58-50.

The Cardinals were led by Russo who scored 21 points, while junior forward Jake Schneider also contributed with eight points. Ursuline was led by Vinny Flauto and Terrance Pankey who each had 14 points.

Ursuline is now 3-1 and will host Grand River Academy at 7 P.M. on Saturday night. Canfield is now 3-1 on the season and will travel to Mooney this Friday. Head Coach John Cullen accomplished 600 career wins after tonight’s victory. Here is what coach Cullen had to say after the win:

 

WARRIORS GET REVENGE OVER URSULINE

BELOIT OH- It was Ursuline who ended West Branch’s season last year in the sectional finals, and Tuesday night, the two teams would meet again in West Branch’s gym. The Warriors found sweet revenge in a 58-47 win over the Irish.

Three Warriors ended in double figures. Dru DeShields led the Warriors with 17. Jaxon Hendershot has a strong night with 15 points. Josh Gregory contributed 10 points as well.

Terrence Pankey led Ursuline in scoring with a game-high 25 points.

West Branch moves on to travel to Canfield on Friday night. Ursuline has a week to prepare for a road trip to Lake Catholic.
