URSULINE WINS BATTLE OF THE IRISH

Ursuline topped Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Friday night in the battle of the Irish, 34-20.

It was Youngstown versus Akron, Reardon and Cistone, Ursuline and St.Vs.

​Defense was the story early in the ballgame as Ursuline set the tone early with a redzone takeaway when D.C. Ferrell picked off Sophomore quarterback Rylan Hurley in the endzone.

​Ursuline’s offense continued to sputter on its’ next drive, but the defense stood tall again, this time forcing a turnover-on-downs in their territory. The ensuing Irish drive found Ursuline converting on a 3rd and 16 when Jack Ericson connected with Devonte Taylor on a 20-yard touchdown strike to give them a 7-0 lead.

​Defense continued to be a story as late in the first half, being backed up on its’ own 4-yard line, Ericson fired a ball that was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted for a touchdown by St. Vincent’s Daveion Wright in the final minute of the first half.

​What looked like a 7-0 Ursuline lead at halftime, turned into a stalemate with two quarters down.

​Whatever Dan Reardon said at halftime worked and worked well. Reardon’s squad forced a three-and-out to start the second half then jumped back in front when Ericson connected with Taylor for a second time, this time from 50 yards out.

​Ursuline would extend the lead on their next drive when a quick screen pass resulted in Ferrell breaking multiple tackles to find himself with a 28-yard score.

​Ericson threw three touchdowns in the win and racked his total up to 15 strikes on the year.

​However, St. Vincent-St. Mary wouldn’t go away.

​Trading punches, Hurley scampered for a 16-yard touchdown to answer. But Jy’Quise Liason responded to it with a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown; his second in as many weeks.

​Right then, it appeared an electric second half was on tap.

​Akron’s Sir Charles Gordon broke several Ursuline tackles just a couple of plays later that resulted in a 69-yard touchdown. Those scores in a matter of two minutes put the score at 27-20 right before the third quarter ended.

​Ursuline finished the game with four forced turnovers, with the last two being the biggest.

​The first came when Akron was driving and had the ball at Ursuline’s 9-yard line. It appeared that another stalemate was on the way when Tairan Davis intercepted Hurley in the endzone and returned 91 yards to the Akron 14-yard line. The next play, Christian Lynch gave his squad some insurance with a touchdown to make it 34-20.

​The second big turnover was a clutch interception by Liason with under five minutes to, for all intents and purposes, “call game”.

​At that point, all John DeSantis’ offense had to do was run the clock out and celebrate the first Ursuline win over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary since October 28, 2011. Snapping the 10-game losing streak to Akron gave Ursuline its’ first 7-0 start since 2010.

Ursuline (7-0) will host Villa Angela-St. Joseph (5-2) next Friday night, October 6th at Stambaugh Stadium.

 

 

CANFIELD CARRIES ANOTHER BIG WIN

CANFIELD OH- In a thrilling boys’ soccer matchup, Canfield demonstrated their prowess on the field as they triumphed over Ursuline with a commanding 4-1 victory. The Canfield squad showcased exceptional teamwork and individual talent, leaving their fans cheering for more.

Canfield’s offensive power was on full display, with Drew Snyder leading the charge. Snyder, a force to be reckoned with, scored not one, but two incredible goals that left the Ursuline defense stunned. His precise finishing and agility were on full display as he found the back of the net twice.

Adding to Canfield’s impressive goal tally, Andrew Battaglia and Ryan Dangol each contributed a goal to secure the victory. Battaglia’s goal showcased his striking accuracy, while Dangol’s finish demonstrated his poise under pressure.

The assists were equally instrumental in Canfield’s victory. Ethan Mulichak and Drew Snyder combined seamlessly to set up their teammates, showcasing their exceptional playmaking abilities.

The defense was a rock-solid fortress for Canfield, and Cam Shaffer played a pivotal role as the goalkeeper. Shaffer showcased his prowess with five incredible saves, denying Ursuline’s attempts to mount a comeback.

With this win, Canfield’s record improved to an impressive 7-1-3 for the season. Their fans have every reason to be excited as they look ahead to their next challenge, a matchup against Harding on Thursday. Canfield’s confidence is soaring, and they aim to maintain their winning momentum as the season progresses. Congratulations to the Canfield boys’ soccer team on a well-deserved victory!

CLIPPERS LAND A WIN ON THE ROAD

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Columbiana’s volleyball team continued their unbeaten streak with an impressive road victory against Ursuline, sweeping the match with scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-20. The players displayed their skill and determination, securing another win for their team.

Ellie Jackson was a standout performer in this match, achieving a remarkable triple-double with 11 kills, 11 digs, and 10 assists. Her versatile contributions played a pivotal role in Columbiana’s success on the court.

Danica Halas added 6 kills and 3 digs to bolster the team’s offensive efforts, while Ava Heinrich showcased her defensive prowess with 16 digs and 5 aces.

Cameron Perkins had an outstanding double-double performance, contributing 15 assists, 11 digs, and 4 kills. Her ability to set up plays and contribute defensively made a significant impact on the game.

With this impressive victory, Columbiana remains undefeated and looks ahead to their next challenge as they host East Palestine on Tuesday, returning to EOAC play with confidence and momentum.

CARDINALS STRIKE GOLD AGAINST URSULINE

YOU GSTOWN OH- In an impressive display of soccer prowess, Canfield continued their unbeaten streak, improving to 10-0-1 with a resounding 4-0 victory over Ursuline. The Canfield team showcased their offensive prowess with four well-executed goals. Maci Toporcer was the star of the match, contributing a remarkable hat-trick to the scoreboard, while Hanna Wahib added to the tally. Wahib, along with Lorieona Jannone, played crucial roles as they provided the assists for the goals, demonstrating their exceptional playmaking skills.

On the defensive front, Canfield demonstrated their dominance by outshooting Ursuline 16-0, leaving their opponents with no room to maneuver. Goalkeeper Lolo Padgett had a quiet match with no saves required, thanks to the solid defense in front of her. Canfield’s performance was a testament to their exceptional teamwork, precision, and discipline on the field. URSULINE OVERWHELMS FALCONS IN THE NEST

AUSTINTOWN OH- In a highly anticipated showdown between two of the area’s football powerhouses, Ursuline and Fitch faced off in a thrilling contest that ultimately saw Ursuline sail to a convincing 32-14 victory.

The game kicked off with fireworks as Jy’Quise Liason of Ursuline made a monumental statement by returning the opening kickoff an astonishing 100 yards for a touchdown just 17 seconds into the game. Although Ursuline’s 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, they took an early 6-0 lead, electrifying the home crowd.

Ursuline’s dominance continued into the first quarter, with Jack Ericson scoring a 9-yard touchdown run at 3:28, extending their lead to 12-0. However, Fitch quickly retaliated with an incredible play of their own. Dan Evans III captivated the fans with an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at 3:13, and Anthony Ruggles added the extra point. What made this play even more spectacular was the lateral pass from Davion Pritchard to Dan Evans III during the return, showcasing Fitch’s creativity on special teams. The score now stood at 12-7.

The second quarter saw Ursuline’s offensive prowess come to the forefront as Jack Ericson connected with DC Ferrell on a 51-yard touchdown pass at 3:53. Anthony Tabak successfully converted the extra point, further extending Ursuline’s lead to 19-7.

As the third quarter began, Fitch displayed their resilience with DJ Williams surging into the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run at 2:53, narrowing the score to 19-14.

Ursuline, determined to maintain their lead, responded in the same quarter with another exceptional performance by Jack Ericson. This time, Ericson showcased his athleticism by leaping over a defender on a 26-yard touchdown run with just 26 seconds left in the third quarter. Although the extra point was missed, Ursuline held a 25-14 lead.

In the game’s closing moments, Ursuline’s Christan Lynch solidified the victory with a 6-yard touchdown run at 2:11 in the third quarter, and Gavin Sedoris added the extra point, securing the final score at 32-14. Lynch, who amassed an impressive 159 rushing yards throughout the game, played a pivotal role in Ursuline’s offensive dominance.

Ericson threw for 101 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 66 yards with a pair of scores.

Ursuline’s exceptional performance against a formidable opponent in Fitch showcased their strength and determination, earning them a well-deserved 32-14 victory. This clash of football titans delivered thrilling moments and highlighted the remarkable talent and competitiveness of both teams.

IRISH STRIKE GOLD AGAINST HARDING

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline crushed Warren Harding 56-20 last night to remain perfect on the season.

​The Irish offense scored on every possession it had in the first half in a nearly perfect offensive effort.

​It came up passing for five of the first six plays, but it was Christian Lynch that started the scoring when he took the option pitch in for a 2-yard touchdown. That was the first of a pair of touchdowns for Lynch as he punched it in from 23 yards out later in the half.

​After a three-and-out from Warren Harding, Jy’QuiseLiaison blocked a punt and gave Ursuline great field position at the Raider 38-yard line.

​Irish signal caller Jack Ericson capped the team’s 38-yard drive with a 5-yard run.

Warren Harding would answer back soon, though. Junior quarterback Chazz Coleman led the Raiders on a long touchdown drive, coming up with clutch third down conversions multiple times. The drive was capped off by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Coleman on a broken play.

Any hope the Raiders had to come back was squandered when Tairan Davis intercepted Coleman and put Ursuline in position to score another touchdown and flirt with a running clock.

From that point though, it was the Ursuline show, featuring Ericson and his plethora of weapons.

​Ericson tallied five touchdowns, three through the air and a pair on the ground. Two of those touchdowns found D.C. Ferrell, while the other went to Devonte Taylor.

​The Ursuline defense kept its’ stout season going with numerous sacks on the night from sophomore A.J. Snyder and company. Allowing just seven points while the Varsity was in, the Irish have now allowed just 11 points per game, including a pair of shutouts.

​As for the offense, a deep and electric attack has resulted in them scoring 45.2 points per game through the halfway point on the year.

​Ursuline’s (5-0) biggest test of the season will come next week, as they travel to Austintown-Fitch (4-1) to take on the Falcons. The highly anticipated matchup begins at 7 p.m., and is sure to live up to the hype.

URSULINE RUNS IN TO FALCON SIZED ROADBLOCK

Thursday night was host to many intriguing matchups across the highschool sports world, both on the field and court alike. Over in Austintown, The Fitch Falcons volleyball team hosted The Ursuline Fighting Irish for a standard best of five set match. Fitch was returning home following two road losses to both The Crestview Rebels and The Mineral Ridge Rams. While Ursuline was as hot as can be, entering Thursday with a perfect match record of 8-0 and an undefeated set record to pair with at 24-0! With Fitch needing a win to get back on track and Ursuline not tasting defeat in slightest for this season, it made for a high stakes contest!

It started out with both teams exchanging points early on while getting acclimated with one another’s defensive looks. But it was Fitch that went on a big run in the middle of the opening set and cruised to a 25-13 win.

Keeping the momentum in the following set, Austintown excelled both behind the service line as well as defensively at the net. Gaining points at a rapid pace off the serve, The Falcons claimed the 25-10 set two win. The Irish had their backs against the wall and came out in the third set with a strong effort, grabbing the initial lead. But once again, The Falcons made good adjustments and attacked in an all-around effort on offense. Spreading the love and getting production from everyone,

Fitch was able to get the straight set sweep with the 25-14 set three win. Three Falcons had double-digit kills on the evening, with Jordan Smith (12) leading the way followed by Kylie Folkwein (10) and Afton Roby (10). Rylie Simons impressed once again, totaling 35 assists to lead the way for Fitch. Morgan Roby was everywhere in the box score, leading the team in digs (9) and aces (4) while chipping in 6 kills of her own!

Ursuline (8-1) will now look to bounce back with a conference contest on the road against The East Golden Bears (5-5). Fitch (9-2) will now hit the road to battle another undefeated team in The Archbishop Hoban Knights (10-0) on Saturday, September 16th. That matchup will be live streamed, for free, on YSN!

URSULINE DOMINATES YOUNGSTOWN FOE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Ursuline rolled past East 46-0 in a Steel Valley Conference clash on Friday night.

The Irish set the tone early on a deflected pass that C.J. Frasco picked off and took back 35 yards to the house. A successful two-point conversion gave them the early 8-0.

After an unsuccessful onside kick, Ursuline forced a Golden Bear three-and-out, then proceeded to block the punt. The Irish capped off the ensuing drive with an 8-yard Christian Lynch touchdown scamper.

A mistake-filled night for East couldn’t have gone worse. East quarterback Andrew Blackmon was the victim of his receivers drops all night. The second big one resulted in another Frasco interception that brought Ursuline inside the redzone. From there, the route was on.

For the Irish, methodical drives showed the versatility of its offense throughout the span of the game. Showing its squad’s quick strike ability, D.C. Ferrell and Jy’Quise Liason broke big plays on back-to-back plays.

Ferrell caught a deep pass from Jack Ericson for what seemed to be a 56-yard touchdown before a holding call brought it back. Liason then responded with his own score of 66 yards to help pad the Ursuline lead.

Five different Irish reached paydirt on the win, they included: Frasco, Lynch (2), Devonte Taylor, Liaison, and Joe Balog.

Ursuline (4-0, 1-0 SVC) will host Warren Harding (1-3) next Friday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.

IRISH HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO SLAY DRAGONS

YOUNGSTOWN OH-Ursuline rolled past Lakeside Friday night 50-0, in what was a quick contest at Stambaugh Stadium.

​Dan Reardon always seems to have some tricks up his sleeve, and tonight he pulled one out on the opening kickoff.

​Kicker Brandon Tabak cued a perfect onside kick that left the Dragons in a helpless scramble on what would be a successful Irish attempt.

​With the ball at midfield for Ursuline, runs by D.C. Ferrell, Jack Ericson, and Christian Lynch led to the Irish getting out to an 8-0 lead after the drive was capped by a 2-yard run from Lynch.

Ericson tossed a touchdown while getting it done with both his arm and legs in the win.

​The ensuing Lakeside possession resulted in Dragon quarterback Alex DiSalvatore fumbling inside his own 10, then watching the reigning Mahoning County Defensive Player of the Year, Ty’Req Donlow scoop the ball up and double the Irish lead.

​Reardon’s squad had it going all night long, and while it’s hard to pinpoint one player in this loaded Ursuline offense, Lynch put his speed and strength on display tonight with well over 100 yards on the ground to go with three scores. The Princeton commit had touchdown runs of 69 and 25 in addition to his first one.

​The stout Irish offense is nothing to scoff at, but neither are the other “two phases” for them. Their defense pitched the shutout, while forcing three turnovers, and the special teams not only had some early game magic but got a touchdown of their own on a 72-yard Ferrell punt return that resulted in six.

​It was a good night to be an Ursuline fan, as the game was under two hours, the second stringers gained valuable playing time, and a pretty 50-0 hung on the scoreboard as the Irish fight song rung through the night, and all the way back to Wick Avenue.

​Ursuline (3-0) will travel to Rayen Stadium next Friday, September 8, for a Steel Valley Conference clash with East (1-2) in the conference opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

WARRIORS DODGE RAIN DROPS TO TROUNCE IRISH

BELOIT OH- On a cool, wet, and dreary night in Beloit, the West Branch girls soccer team exploded for seven second half goals en route to a 9-0 win over the visiting Ursuline Irish to stay perfect on the season.  The Warriors are now 4-0-2.

The two teams battled for much of the first half as the Warriors only led by a 2-0 margin at halftime.  An early goal in the second half helped lead the way for the flood gates to open as the Warriors continued to build its lead and ultimately handily defeating the Irish.

Chloe Dennison led the way with five goals for the Warriors.  Sophia Gregory also added a hat trick with three goals of her own.  Aubrianna Thomas would round out the goals scored for the winners.

In addition to her three goals, Gregory also had three assists on the night.  Kennedy Berger added two assists and Allie Brammer, Samantha Koneval and Dennison each had one.

In goal Audrey Eaton had two saves and Zoe Sanders finished the day with one save.

The Warriors next game will be in a week as Minerva will visit in each teams opening EBC match.
