FLY EAGLES FLY

MASSILLON, OH- Sometimes it’s not how you start, and it’s not how you finish- but the work you put in between that matters the most.  Surely enough, for Warren JFK on Friday night, they put in the time, the effort, and the game plan and executed incredibly to win the Division VII State Semi-Final 20-13 over Newark Catholic.

In a contest that came down to the final play, the Eagles owned the night- but Newark Catholic made the game quite interesting toward the end.

Newark scored with 16 seconds left to make the game 20-13 in what many thought would be the last shot of the night for the Green Wave to be felt.  A stellar onside kick on the ensuing kickoff have Newark Catholic the pigskin on the Eagles 41-yard line, where Cole Canter delivered a 22-yard strike to Brandon Buchanan, rushed the line up to spike the football with six ticks left on the clock, and set up the games final play- the Hail Mary.  For JFK- it was the big-frame and basketball IQ of Nick Fordeley who broke up the pass in the endzone to send the Eagles to Columbus next weekend.

JFK’s scores would all come from the legs of Cam Hollobaugh who plunged in from 3, 2, and 3-yards out respectively.  The JFK Superman totaled 125 yards on 29 carries and dialed up 5-5 night through the air with 74 yards, and also had a 55-yard kickoff return to open the second half and set the Eagles up with great field position and momentum to start the second half.

“I compared him this week to Tim Tebow, and he legit is.  You watch him play and every time he does something special- I think to myself about Tim Tebow.  ‘Give me the ball, I’m not losing…and that’s who Cam Hollobaugh is.” said JFK Head Coach Dom Prologo of his QB1.

The “Blue Storm” defense was incredible for JFK as well, coming up big in several moments throughout the night, and keeping pressure on Cole Canter seemingly every play.  Sophomore Ambrose Hoso made his presence felt from up the middle while Eddie Kiernan and Michael Gumino continued to set the edge each play.  Perhaps one of the biggest plays of the night came deep in Eagle territory when Gabe Green had great coverage on a receiver, and rose up like LeBron James to snatch an interception and hold the Green Wave to an empty possession.

With the victory, JFK will pack their bags and look to leave enough space to bring home the state championship trophy next Friday against New Bremen at 2 pm at Fortress Obetz in Columbus.  The game is scheduled for 2pm.

ALWAYS BET ON SPACE CADET

WARREN, OH- Greatness comes in all shapes and forms.  For Warren JFK, much is said about the top-tier backfield on offense.  However, it’s the receivers who have kept defenses honest in coverage.  Just ask the teams left in JFK’s wake over the last few weeks.

If you don’t cover they outside, Kennedy will hurt you through the air.  The main weapon continues to be a multi-sport star, Gabe Green.  Green is known so well for his athleticism and shiftiness, but if GG gets in space, you may as well call the FAA, because Gabe Green has more jets than Southwest.

We (unlike many) caught up with the Eagle’s featured target this week to discuss the legacy of he and his classmates, his future plans, and the role models he carries on and off the field.

SEASONS GREETINGS AND HAPPY HOLLOBAUGH

WARREN, OH- Sometimes life isn’t fair.  You work so hard at one particular subject, trade, or position- and you just can’t quite meet the requirements.  Day after day, rep after rep, and you realize that maybe there’s a different path for you, you need to make a “fight or flight” choice that changes your direction.

Then.

There’s the other side: the times that you’re so good at everything that it leaves your opposition staggered, and your teammates pointing in your direction with it all on the line.  You’re naturally so outstanding at one of your jobs, that your superior gives you more jobs to learn to further your value on a more regular basis.

If the first paragraph describes you- we’re sorry.  Keep your chin up.

If the second paragraph describes you- you’re probably Warren JFK’s Cam Hollobaugh, the Eagle’s “Do What It Takes” Swiss-Army Knife that continues to garner attention all over the Valley with his creativity on the highlight tapes.  He’s a modern-day Superman on the gridiron with his ability to speed past you, the power to run through you, and the ability to throw the pigskin a quarter-mile.  (How much you wanna bet he can throw a football over them mountains?)

However, in all seriousness, it’s Cam’s leadership that he’s been working on the most.  The ability to influence others wherever he is on or off the field- that’s what most won’t see on a highlight tape that you can gather from a few minutes of a conversation with the JFK Senior.

We sat down with one of The Valley’s best players for this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: Seasons Greetings and Happy Hollobaugh.

JFK HOLDS BACK ST PAUL TO GET INTO SEMIFINALS

WARREN OH- Warren JFK had to hold strong on a final drive from St Paul to hang on to their late lead and win 27-21 in the quarterfinals. The Eagles built a two score lead in the first half, but St Paul’s offense came out swinging and gave the Eagles a battle to the end.

Jesse Likens got the Eagles on the board first with a one yard run capping an 80 yard opening drive. Then after forcing a three and out, Likens struck again this time from 13 yards out. Cam Hollobaugh was also productive for the Eagles gaining 168 yards on the ground with 30 carries. He also added 59 yards through the air. Hollobaugh scores maybe the most important touchdown of the day with a 50 yard blast when the game was 20-14 Eagles. The 13 point lead was just enough to hold on to a 27-21 win.

The Eagles advance to the regional semifinals next week as they’ll host Dalton.
