A FLASHY FINISH FOR KENNEDY

WARREN, OH- The Heartland Christian Lions came down to the Gillen Gymnasium Monday night to try and spoil senior night for the JFK Eagles. However, the Lady Eagles were victorious in the end winning 59-40. A fantastic finish of the regular season.

From start to finish, Heartland always seemed to be one step behind Kennedy. The Lions fouled less than the Eagles in the first half, but that didn’t stop Kennedy from staying ahead in the scoring phase. Sophomore, Faith Hollobaugh drained three shots from being the arch with 9 total points in the half, matching her teammate Caitlyn Condoleon. Also with 9 points in the half on the other side of the ball was Maddie Mathews. At the end of the half, the score was 30-20

After a halftime full of exciting basketball from the little Eagles, the big Eagles came out swinging outscoring the Lions by 8 in the quarter and 17 in total. Hollobaugh was 5 for 5 at the free-throw line and scored 9 points in total in the second half. Condoleon was also 100% from the foul line and scored 11 points in the second half. Heartland tried to make a comeback as best as they could with 16 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough, for Kennedy ended their last regular-season home game with a win 59-40

Leading the Eagles in scoring Monday night was Caitlyn Condoleon was 21 points, followed up by Faith Hollobaugh with 18, both 100% at the free-throw line. Leading the Lions in scoring was Maddie Mathews scoring 19 points, followed up by Sydney Ogden with 13 points who was 5 for 6 at the line. JFK is now 13-7 on the season and next play North on Thursday. Heartland moves to 6-14 and next play Brookfield Wednesday.

VIKINGS STEAL WIN FROM JFK

WARREN, OH – Saturday night the boy’s varsity basketball team of John F. Kennedy hosted Villa Angela-St. Joseph in the Gillen Gymnasium. It was a close back and forth battle, but the Vikings came out on top with a close scoreline of 77-74.

The first half of the game had several lead changes, and the largest point differential was 8 points. Kennedy junior Cam Hollobaugh ended the first half with a total of 13 points with one 3 and also added style points for passing the ball between a VASJ defender to Bobby Plizga for a score. On VASJ’s side of the ball, Jaden Hameed scored 14 points in the first half. Jaden Hameed also ended the first quarter with a last-second long two-point shot close to the buzzer. The half ended with the Vikings up by one 34-33.

While the first half of the game was somewhat clean, the second half seemed to play rather sloppy on both sides of the ball. The Eagles seemed to have a tough time holding on to the ball and turned over multiple times in the first half. However, Cam Hollobaugh of Kennedy answered back with many steals in the second half and tried to drag his team back on top. Sean Johnson on VASJ completed the 3rd quarter with 12 points and 20 points in total. VASJ ended the quarter up by 3, 54-51.

The fourth quarter consisted of many turnovers and messy play on both sides of the ball. Saba Svani of Kennedy ended up fouling out of the game. Jaden Hameed saw himself taking foul shots 10 times alone in the quarter. Kennedy tried to outscore the Vikings by putting 23 points on the board, but VASJ did the same. With 8 seconds remaining in the game, Kennedy tried to make one last drive down by 3. A pass was handed to Bobby Plizga who attempted one last desperation shot, but unfortunately, it did not fall through. The Vikings survived the battle and won 77-74.

Leading scorer for Kennedy was Cam Hollobaugh with 27 points, 3 for 3 at the line, while TJ Harden finished with a baker’s dozen (13).  VASJ’s leading scorer was Jaden Hameed with 29 points, 7 for 10 at the line. Kennedy will go 6-12 on the season and VASJ will go 7-9.

EAGLES CLAW TO VICTORY OVER NDCL

WARREN, OH – Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin faced off against John F. Kennedy at the Gillen Gymnasium. NDCL seemed to be forming a comeback after being down over 20 points in the second half of the game, but Kennedy held their own and won a close game 72-68.

In the first quarter, over half of Kennedy’s points were scored by Cam Hollobaugh with a total of 13 points in the first with five 2s and one 3. Not much action on the Lion’s side of the ball with the score at the end of the first being 24-11. The second quarter stayed much of the same on both sides of the ball, but Kennedy finished that half with 10 fouls while NDCL had 6. The half ended 43-26  Kennedy up by 17. NDCL needed to get something moving quickly and needed to flip the script.

Flipping the script is almost exactly what NDCL did. The beginning of the third quarter consisted much of the same play with Kennedy leading by 21 points at one point with 3 turnovers in a row by Cam Hollobaugh of the Eagles. But in a matter of minutes, Kennedy’s lead seemed to disappear now dwindling the 8 points at the end of the third, 55-48. In the fourth quarter, NDCL seemed to tie it up at 57 causing many turnovers much like the end of the third quarter. The Lions started making the Eagles sweat, but Kennedy showed off their endurance and did not give the lead away. NDCL tried to come back as they did before, but could not catch up in possession race with the Eagles. The Lions tried to make a late-game comeback but ended up losing to the Eagles 72-68.

Leading the Eagles in scoring was Cam Hollobaugh with 25 points on the night, followed by Saba Svani with 18 points shooting 5 for 6 at the free-throw line. NDCL as a team shot 9 for 26 at the free-throw line. Leading the team in points was Dane Beischag with 24 points only shooting 2 for 6 at the line. John F. Kennedy Catholic improving to 6-11 will next play Villa Angela-St. Joeseph at home on Saturday, February 8. NDCL moving to 8-9 will next play Gilmour Academy at home on Friday, February 7.

EAGLES TOO MUCH FOR CHAMPION

WARREN, OH – On a cold Tuesday night, the Champion Flashes shot down over to the Gillen Gymnasium to face off against the John F. Kennedy Eagles. This heated rivalry ended in a hard-fought battle on both sides of the ball, with Kennedy victorious 60-54.

The first and second quarter stayed even nearly the entire time. The end score in the first quarter being 12-12 and the second quarter 23-23. Abe Bayos of Champion led his team in the first quarter with 4 two-pointers. Bobby Plizga of Kennedy led his team in the first quarter with 6 points in total. The first half for Kennedy was played rather sloppy with 10 fouls in the first half while Champion only had 3.

The second half started off with a bang with back to back 3 point shots made by Saba Svani of Kennedy and one 3 for Luke Zigarovich of Champion. The 3rd quarter was clean up significantly by Kennedy while it seemed like the roles switched, for Champion was the team with messy play. However, with 1.4 seconds left in the quarter, Champion received the ball and made a quick two-point shot at the buzzard. There was finally a point differential at the end of a quarter when at the end of the third, it was 43-38 Champion with the lead.

The final quarter of the game consisted of consistent passing connections on both sides of the ball, but Kennedy with the edge slightly. This was a theme that kept up for Kennedy throughout the rest of the 4th quarter for they scored 11 more points in total than Champion. The Flashes could not handle the consistent pace of the Eagles and were struggling to get meaningful possession of the ball. The game ended with Kennedy winning 60-54 with 22 points in the fourth quarter while Champion had 11.

Leading the Eagles in scoring was Saba Svani with 21 points with 4 three’s on the night. Leading the Flashes for the night was Abe Bayos with 19 points and 5 for 6 at the free-throw line. John F. Kennedy now increases to 4-11 on the season and Champion now at 8-8. Kennedy will play Andrews Osborne Academy on January 30 and Champion will play Memorial on January 31.

LADY EAGLES BATTLE OFF ST. JOHN

WARREN, OH – On Saturday in the middle of the day, the St. John ladies’ basketball team from Ashtabula traveled over to Warren to face the John F. Kennedy lady Eagles. Lead changes were frequent and it was a close game, but the Eagles came out victorious with a score of 56-50.

The first quarter started off rather unsettling when within 10 seconds of the game there was an injured girl on St John’s team. Sydney Carpenter seemed to have landed awkwardly on her hip as she leaped for a jump ball. However, it did not stop her from playing in the game, for she drained two 3’s in the first quarter after resting her hip. The first few minutes of the game consisted of nonstop 3 point shots from both teams. Faith Hollobaugh drained two 3’s in back to back possessions with 3 in total in the quarter.

In the second quarter the lead switched up a few times, but Kennedy ended the half with a 5 point lead. It also seemed to be the start of the Caitlyn Condoleon show, for she scored 11 points in the second quarter alone, scoring all but 2 points for the entire team in the quarter. St. John’s leading scoring of the quarter, Emily Cevera, had 7 points with two 3’s made. The Eagles increased their lead ending the half with a score of 32-27.

The second half remained the same for Condoleon scoring 14 points in the second half. Both teams scored the same amount of points in the third and fourth quarters. There was also another injury on the St. John team. After a turnover resulting in St. John’s ball, Julieann Sheldon seemed to fall to the ground holding her right ankle. She was tended to and did not return for the rest of the game, for it seemed to be an ankle sprain. Kennedy held on to their lead throughout the rest of the game and finished with a 56-50 win over St. John.

Leading the lady Eagles in scoring was Caitlyn Condoleon with 28 points followed by Faith Hollobaugh with 15 points, all being 3’s. Leading the Fighting Heralds in scoring was Emily Cervera with 19 followed by Sydney Carpenter with 17. The Eagles are now 7-3 on the season while St. John is 1-5. The Eagles next play at East on January 13 at 5:30.

IRON WILL; CCC CAGES EAGLES

WARREN, OH- On Friday night basketball, the Cleveland Central Catholic Ironmen traveled to Warren to face the John F. Kennedy Eagles. The Ironmen seemed to have baffled the Eagles defense throughout the game as the won with an astonishing scoreline of 73-38.

The first quarter began with a slow start between both teams from the tip-off to triple zeros. There was one three-pointer by each of the teams in the first quarter. For the Ironmen was Charles Knuckles and for the Eagles was Gabe Green. Throughout the first quarter and throughout the game, Kennedy has cleaned up their game significantly compared to their last game against the Ursuline Fighting Irish. But that does not turn away the fact that the Eagles were outscored by the Ironmen at the end of the first quarter 9-13.

The second quarter is where things decided to pick up for the Ironmen, scoring a total of 18 points making the end of the half score 20-31. Terran Mack leading the charge with 7 points in the quarter. As CCC seemed to speed up their pace, JFK seemed to keep the same pace, if not a slower pace, and started falling behind the Ironmen. And just like the first quarter, only one three-pointer was made by each team. Gabe Green again on the Eagles and Arthur Fayne for the Ironmen. At the end of the half, Cleveland Central Catholic had 3 fouls in the half and JFK had 6. From here on out, Cleveland Central Catholic did not let off the gas pedal in more ways than one.

The third and fourth quarters both consisted of 21 point games by the consistent Ironmen. They kept playing fast pace ball and the Eagles could not keep up with them where they only accumulated 18 combined points in both quarters. The score went from a 25 point lead at the end of the third, to a 35 point lead at the end of the fourth. The offensive powerhouse of Cleveland Central Catholic was too great for JFK to handle, including the multiple dunks pulled off by three different players. Limar Bowen seemed to be injured on a play and had to be taken to the locker room, but soon came out looking healthy.

The game ended with a slaughter of 38-73 with Cleveland Central Catholic victorious. Leading scorer of the night for CCC was Arthur Fayne with 17 points on the night with 3 three-pointers. Following him was Terran Mack with 11 points that evening. Leading the point total for the Eagles was T.J Hardin with 10 points followed by a tie of 8 points between Bobby Plizga and Gabe Green. The Ironmen had 10 fouls on the night while the Eagles had 13.

The Eagles’ next game will be at home against the Liberty Leopards Tuesday, December 17
