WESTERN RESERVE LANDS A BIG BLOW

MCDONALD OH- Western Reserve pulled off a remarkable victory, slowing down the previously undefeated McDonald team with a convincing 34-14 win. The first quarter saw Western Reserve’s quarterback, Luke Henning, making a statement with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful PAT by Andriy Chuta Suy, giving Western Reserve an early 7-0 lead. McDonald responded with a 15-yard TD pass from Kyle Puckett to Jordan Perry, and James Hipple’s PAT tied the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, Western Reserve regained the lead with Jack Darney’s 5-yard rushing TD and Chuta Suy’s PAT, making it 14-7. Luke Henning then added to the lead with an electrifying 49-yard rushing TD, although McDonald blocked the PAT, leaving the score at 20-7 at halftime.

Western Reserve continued their dominance in the third quarter with Jack Darney’s explosive 68-yard rushing TD, followed by Henning connecting with Dominic Ricciardi for a 12-yard passing TD, both with successful PATs, extending the lead to 34-7. In the fourth quarter, McDonald managed to find the end zone once more with Puckett’s 13-yard rushing TD, but it was not enough to mount a comeback. The game concluded with an impressive 34-14 victory for Western Reserve, ending McDonald’s undefeated streak. Western Reserve’s outstanding performance showcased their strength on the football field, leaving them with a memorable win.

BERLIN CENTER OH- For the third time in as many days The Western-Reserve Blue Devils engaged in an inner
conference battle with a fellow Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) Scarlet Division member. After defeating, and sweeping, the likes of The Jackson-Milton Blue Jays and The Lowellville Rockets on Tuesday and Wednesday, The Blue Devils were set to square-off with The Springfield Tigers on Thursday.

Both teams had more than respectable records prior to their Thursday meeting. With The Tigers at a 5-2 clip and Western-Resrve a perfect 7-0. The Blue Devils came out of the gates flexing early, capturing a 25-13 opening set win. If you thought things couldn’t get more dominant, then think again! Kicking the amps up to eleven, Western-Resrve rolled their way to a 25-7 set two victory. The more things change the more they stay the same, as Springfield provided more fight in the third set, but to no avail. Managing a 25-15 set win and a straight set sweep, The Blue Devils broke out the brooms against another conference opponent! Their fifth conference sweep of the season and seventh sweep overall!

Big performers included Alyvia Hughes who recorded 17 kills to lead the team. While “The Ice Queen” lived up to her nickname, as Izzy Mauro was stone-cold at the net with 8 blocks and 4 kills of her own. Ally Jones had another great outing defensively, racking up 15 digs in the match. Lisa Eichert was involved in multiple stat categories with 11 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks! While Haylee Fellows got it done both on the floor and behind the service line with 21 assist and 3 aces.

Springfield (5-3) will look to get back on track as they head back home to entertain Ursuline (8-0) who is 24-0 in sets, on Monday, September 11th at 7 p.m.! While

Western-Reserve (8-0) will look to keep the train rolling as it will be chuggin on the road to Cardinal Mooney (3-4) also on Monday

BLUE DEVILS DON’T MISS A BEAT

BERLIN CENTER OH- Western Reserve displayed their dominance on the volleyball court with a swift 3-0 victory over Lowellville, securing victory with scores of 25-20, 25-4, and 25-12. It was a commanding performance that left no doubt about Western Reserve’s prowess.

Alyvia Hughes led the charge with an impressive 12 kills, 11 digs, and 3 service aces, demonstrating her versatility as both an offensive and defensive force. Allison Jones showcased her defensive prowess with an outstanding 17 digs, while Angelina Cappabianca’s contributions included 8 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 aces. Izzy Mauro added to the offensive firepower with 8 kills and 2 blocks, while setter Haylee Fellows orchestrated the offense with precision, tallying 25 assists.

On the Lowellville side, Aryanna Romano distributed 4 assists, while Morgan Lewis and Serrina Tynch each contributed 3 kills, striving to keep their team in the contest.

Western Reserve’s impressive victory sets the stage for their next challenge as they return home to host Springfield on Thursday. Lowellville, on the other hand, will look ahead to their matchup against Waterloo on the same day. Volleyball enthusiasts can anticipate more thrilling matchups and intense competition as these teams continue their season journeys.

 

 

RESERVE WASTES NO TIME IN JACKSON MILTON

NORTH JACKSON OH- Western Reserve showcased their unwavering dominance on the volleyball court, delivering a resounding sweep against Jackson Milton, with scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-17. The match was a testament to their exceptional skills and teamwork.

Setting the stage for victory, Haylee Fellows orchestrated the offense with precision, amassing 14 assists and contributing 8 crucial service points. Her steady hand at the helm ensured a seamless flow of play for Western Reserve.

On the attacking front, Lisa Eichert and Alyvia Hughes were unstoppable forces, tallying 11 and 9 kills, respectively. Eichert’s powerful hits and Hughes’ relentless pursuit of points provided a formidable offensive duo. Hughes also showcased her versatility with 4 service aces, adding even more value to her team’s performance.

The defensive efforts of Western Reserve were equally impressive, with Allison Jones leading the charge by accumulating 14 digs, showcasing her agility and quick reflexes on the backline. Angelina Cappabianca demonstrated her prowess on both ends of the court, contributing 5 kills, 2 crucial blocks, and 4 assists to round out the team’s impressive display.

THE BLUE DEVILS BURN BRIGHT

BERLIN CENTER OH- Western Reserve delivered an impressive performance in Week 3, securing a resounding 28-6 victory over Columbiana. The game began with a statement as Western Reserve’s Jack Darney intercepted a pass and sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown, giving his team an early 7-0 lead with Andrij Chuta Suy adding the PAT. The first quarter ended with Western Reserve in control.

In the second quarter, Western Reserve continued to assert their dominance, with Luke Henning connecting with Jack Darney for a 42-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 14-0 after Suy’s successful PAT. Columbiana responded with two field goals by Aidan Radcliff, from 24 and 27 yards, closing the gap to 14-6 by halftime.

The third quarter saw Western Reserve further their lead as Luke Henning took matters into his own hands, rushing for a 20-yard touchdown, and Suy’s PAT made it 21-6. The third quarter ended with Western Reserve firmly in control.

In the final quarter, Western Reserve sealed the deal with another Henning-Darney connection, this time for a 40-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 28-6 after Suy’s PAT.

The game concluded with Western Reserve emerging victorious with a final score of 28-6. Looking ahead, Western Reserve is set to face McDonald in Week 4, while Columbiana returns home to host United in their upcoming matchup. This game showcased Western Reserve’s prowess on both sides of the ball, as they secured a commanding win in Week 3.

WESTERN RESERVE SWEEPS THEIR WAY TO A FIRST PLACE SPOT

BERLIN CENTER OH- In an impressive performance, Western Reserve achieved a sweeping victory over McDonald, securing their place at the top of the MVAC standings. The scores of 25-10, 25-21, and 25-22 showcased Western Reserve’s dominance on the court.

Allison Jones emerged as a standout player, contributing perfectly executed passes and serve receives, along with a remarkable 17 digs, 1 service ace, and 1 assist. The team’s synergy was evident, with Lisa Eichert’s 21 digs and 8 kills, Alyvia Hughes’ 21 kills, 4 aces, and 12 digs, and Haylee Fellows’ 15 assists and 1 ace. Izzy Mauro’s impressive 9 blocks highlighted her defensive prowess. Angelina Cappabianca rounded out the team’s solid performance with 4 assists, 4 kills, and 5 blocks.

With this resounding victory, Western Reserve solidifies their first-place position in the MVAC standings, showcasing their skill and teamwork on the volleyball court.

RESERVE KEEPS GETTING BETTER

COLUMBIANA OH- Western Reserve keeps getting more dominant by the day. On Monday to start off the week the Blue Devils made quick work of Heartland Christian in straight sets. (25-15 25-14 25-16)

 

Izzy Mauro had a tremendous night both with defense and offense. She put together 5 blocks, and 5 kills.  Alyvia Hughes was dangerously close to a double double finishing the night with 10 kills, 9 digs, and an ace.  Lisa Eichert was firmly in the stat book with 6 kills, and 7 digs. Angelina Cappabianca was busy all night. She had 4 blocks 5 kills 4 assists and 1 ace.  Hayley Fellows continued to set well for the Blue Devils finishing with 18 assists and an ace as well.

Western Reserve has a big matchup scheduled next as they travel to McDonald to try to stay at the top of the MVAC.  Heartland returns to action Wednesday as they go to East Palestine.

BLUE DEVILS WIN A THRILLER ON THE ROAD

Conneaut, OH- The game between the Conneaut Spartans and the Western Reserve Blue Devils was a thrilling back-and-forth battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The scoreboard reflected the intense competition, with both teams showcasing their offensive prowess and determination to secure victory.

In the second quarter, Conneaut’s Max Gleason kicked off the scoring with a 5-yard running touchdown, followed by a successful extra point, giving Conneaut an early 7-0 lead. However, Western Reserve’s Luke Henning quickly responded with a 6-yard running touchdown, leveling the score at 7-7 after the extra point.

As the clock ticked down in the second quarter, Max Gleason once again seized the spotlight with an impressive 71-yard run for another Conneaut touchdown. The extra point extended their lead to 14-7. Not to be outdone, Western Reserve’s Luke Henning connected with Ethan Cannon for a 23-yard pass, resulting in a touchdown and tying the game at 14-14 just before halftime.

The third quarter saw Max Gleason’s dominance continue, as he powered through for a 3-yard touchdown run, putting Conneaut ahead 21-14 after the successful extra point. However, Western Reserve’s Luke Henning refused to let his team fall behind, orchestrating a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to even the score at 21-21 following the extra point.

With the game hanging in the balance, Conneaut’s Bryce Spurlin stepped up and nailed a 40-yard field goal, giving Conneaut a narrow 24-21 advantage with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter. The tension remained high as Luke Henning led Western Reserve’s offense down the field, ultimately executing a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:26 left on the clock. The extra point pushed Western Reserve into the lead, 28-24.

Despite a valiant effort from the Conneaut Spartans, time ran out, and the Western Reserve Blue Devils emerged victorious with a final score of 28-24. The Conneaut Spartans, now 1-1, would face the Independance Blue Devils in an away game in week three, while the Western Reserve Blue Devils, also 1-1, would host the Columbiana Clippers. The game showcased the resilience and skill of both teams and left fans eagerly anticipating their upcoming matchups.

WESTERN RESERVE GETS BIG WIN IN MVAC PICTURE

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a riveting volleyball contest, Western Reserve emerged victorious over Mineral Ridge in an intense 5-set encounter, showcasing their determination and skill. The match scores demonstrated the close battle: 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, and a nail-biting 17-15 in the final set.

Alyvia Hughes proved to be a standout performer for Western Reserve, contributing a total of 17 kills, 4 aces, and 10 digs to her team’s success. Lisa Eichert mirrored Hughes’ prowess with 17 kills and added 8 digs to her repertoire. Quincy Miller exhibited her playmaking abilities, leading the team with 17 assists, while Dailen Brown’s impressive net presence resulted in 7 blocks that stifled Mineral Ridge’s attack.

With this hard-fought victory, Western Reserve is geared up for their upcoming home opener against Heartland Christian on Thursday. On the other side, Mineral Ridge will host Jackson Milton, setting the stage for another exciting round of volleyball action. Both teams’ competitive spirits are sure to make for compelling matchups as they continue their season campaigns.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST; WESTERN RESERVE SWEEPS THE BULLDOGS

POLAND OH- It was the definition of a family affair on Monday as the Hughes family got together for some fun to open up the volleyball season.  Aleah Hughes-Diamond is the head coach at Poland, while her mom, and younger sister Alexis are on the coaching staff for Western Reserve. Aleah’s youngest sister Alyvia is a senior at Western Reserve.  You know what they say? Mother always knows best. This reigned true as the Blue Devils swept their way through Poland for their first victory of the season (25-5 25-6 25-19).

Hughes was one kill away from a double double as she led the Blue Devils offense with 9 kills, and dug up 11 balls.  Lisa Eichert was a solid swinger for Reserve as well finishing with 7 kills. She also collected 16 service points, and a pair of aces.  Ally Jones led the defense in the back row with an impressive 15 digs.  Abby Blair and Izzy Mauro both had a pair of blocks at the net.

Olivia Minehart led Poland with 5 kills, and Izzy Greco added 4.  Bella Khoury played well in the back row gathering 9 digs.  Mya Scott set up the offense well with 6 assists on the night.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday as Western Reserve travels to Mineral Ridge for a big MVAC matchup, and Poland opens up NE8 play at home vs Struthers.
