They boys basketball team moved to 4-0 with a 66-56 win over undefeated Tallmadge.
The way the Raiders started the game set a tone that would last the whole night. Opening the first quarter on a 14-2 run the Raiders let everyone know they came to play. The Blue Devils wanted to play fast, and the only bad thing about the Raiders fast start was that it played into the Blue Devil’s hands. They began to speed up the Raiders offense and forced 5 consecutive turnovers to actually take a 16-14 lead at a point. From this point on the Raiders regrouped and regained control of the game. Tying the game at 16 before the end of the first frame was only the beginning.
The Raiders outscored the Blue Devils 17-10 in the second quarter lead by Jaxon Anderson who came into the game averaging 14.7 points a game. The Raiders gained a 7 point halftime lead at 33-26.
A fantastic effort from the Blue Devils Matt Francesconi kept them within striking distance for the entire second half. He scored a game high 27 points and hit three big second half shots to keep his team in it. Unfortunately his fortunes weren’t as good at the free throw line, getting there 12 times but only connecting on 6 shots. This helped the Raiders maintain a lead throughout the second half and go on to win 66-56.
The Raiders had 3 players in double figures with 2 others with 9 in their balanced offensive attack. Jaxon Anderson lead the way with 20, while Mike Cunningham added 12. For the second game in a row Chris Brooks was also in double figures with 11. The Raiders return to action Friday as they travel to Ursuline in their first true road game of the season. JV tips at 5:30.
The Raiders boys basketball team just 1 day removed from a victory over Crestview had to dig deep to beat Malvern 58-52 and remain perfect on the season.
In the 1st quarter both team came out swinging. Mike Cunningham was able to knock down a three to put the Raiders up 15-13 late in the frame but the Hornets answered right back and exited the quarter with a 16-15 lead.
The Raiders offense struggled to find rhythm in the 2nd quarter and more three point shooting from the Hornets gave them a sizeable advantage. The Raiders were able to muster 9 points in the quarter to keep the Hornets from running away with the game. At halftime the Raiders trailed 33-25.
The 3rd quarter was where the Raiders really shined. They opened the 2nd half on a 11-2 run capped off by two free throws from Jaxon Anderson to go up 36-35 and they would never surrender that lead Chris Brooks was a big reason why the Raiders dominated in the 2nd half ballooning his total to a season high 13 before the end of the 3rd quarter. The Raiders went into the final stanza with a 44-38 lead.
The Raiders ball movement and time management in the 4th quarter was the key to holding on to the lead. The Hornets made attempts at dramatic comebacks but just couldn’t get enough possessions to gain any momentum. The closest they got was 5, and at that point the Hornets went to steal a pass but instead were called for a foul. The Hornet defender slammed the ball down in frustration and was rewarded with a technical foul which gave the Raiders two free throws and the ball. This gave the Raiders a 7 point lead. The Raiders would go on to win 58-52.
Mike Cunningham lead the Raiders with 15 points while Chris Brooks added 13, Jaxon Anderson was also in double figures with 12. The boys return to action Tuesday as they host Tallmadge. JV will begin at 5:30.
The Lady Raiders improved to 7-0 today with a 55-43 win over Brookfield in the Hope Classic played at Struthers High School.
The Raiders started off blazing fast with a 17-3 run to open the game. Lead by the inside presence of Dani Vuletich and Izzy Lamparty the Raiders took a commanding 18-6 lead out of the first frame.
The Warriors were able to stabilize the game in the 2nd quarter staying in striking distance but just when it seemed like they might crack into the Raider lead Bri Modic hit threes to keep the Raider lead in double figures. But the Warriors looked to take just a 10 point deficit into halftime, certainty manageable. Sam Patrone had other plans as she buried a long three at the buzzer to give the Raiders a 33-20 lead at the break.
In the third more three point shooting from Modic and Patrone helped propel the Raiders while the Warriors tried hard to fight back in the game. The two of them ended up hitting 6 three pointers in the game combined. As the Raiders kept their lead right at 12 for most of the remainder of the game. The game high effort from Warriors’ Bailey Drapola kept it that way as she finished with 26. But despite that great effort the Raiders were able to walk away with a 55-33 win.
Bri Modic and Dani Vuletich both lead the Raiders with 18 points a piece, a career high for Dani. The Lady Raiders take an 11 day hiatus before returning to action on Dec 20 traveling for a rematch against Carrollton who the Raiders beat 54-51 on Dec 4.
