SPRINGFIELD SENIORS HAVE VICTORIOUS NIGHT

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Senior nights are a part of every season. Programs take the time to honor players that have given 4 years to their program. Springfield had 6 seniors to honor on Wednesday night. They honored them with a sweep over Struthers.

Baelyn Brungard led the Tigers offense with 9 kills on the night.  She was one kill away from a double double, she finished with 15 assists, she also had 7 digs.  Jameka Brungard finished with 6 kills, and 3 blocks.  Sami McKim led the team in digs with 26.  Jacey Mullen also had double digit digs with 14.

Springfield finishes the regular season with a record of 12-10. They are the 7 seed in the upcoming Division IV district tournament, and they’ll open their run on Tuesday hosting Newton Falls.

GIRARD IS HAVING A GOOD DEDE

GIRARD OH- A lot of attention gets put on Girard’s weapons on the outside. Rightfully so, Lauren Pallone, and Bree Latell are a tough two headed monster. But don’t forget about the shining star in the middle of the net. Girard’s middle blocker Esra Dede has jumped in to the fold this year and added a new tool to Girard’s offense.  This is the first year Esra has been on the floor without her sister Seyhan and its let her fly on her own.  In the second matchup against Lakeview this season Dede came up huge slowing down the Bulldogs powerful middles.

No one shows great work ethic like Esra.  This is what makes her such a good leader. Her drive and passion to constantly get better is topped by none.  She is sometimes even her own biggest critic. She always pushes herself in practice and games. The younger players see that, and they are able to copy it. Her footprints will live on in the Girard program for years to come.

YSN’s Anthony Hartwig was able to catch up with Esra this week to talk about her senior season. They talk about younger players she is mentoring, how competitive she is, and so much more. Have a great day and check out the latest Girard Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

COLUMBIANA OH- Columbiana had one more tournament tune on Wednesday as they concluded the regular season against Ursuline. It took everything that the Clippers had, but they eventually mastered Ursuline in 5 sets. (25-23 26-24 18-25 23-25 15-8)

Ellie Jackson had a monster double double putting up huge numbers. She finished with 17 assists, and 34 digs.  Ava Heinrich had a field with her swing. She put down 18 kills.  Cameron Perkins added a double double for herself. She finished with 22 digs, and 13 assists.  Perkins also found 7 kills, and 3 aces.

Columbiana now looks forward to tournament time as they’ll take on South Range in the first round of the Medina district.  Ursuline also has tournament on the mind, they’ll match up with Edgewood on Wednesday.

LAKEVIEW SENDS STATEMENT TO THE REST OF THE DISTRICT

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Before the OHSAA volleyball tournament gets started next week, Lakeview felt like testing their skills against a team in their bracket. They matched up with Mineral Ridge who is the 5 seed in the bracket.  Lakeview made a statement with a big sweep of the Rams on the road.  (25-15 25-14 25-21)

Tara Lytle led the Bulldogs in kills with 16 on the night.  Mallory Mailach set her and the other hitters up well and finished with 23 assists to lead the team.  Brooke Schneider and Maddie Bayus both led the Bulldogs in digs with 15 each.

Mineral Ridge’s offense was led by Faith Schneider and Ava Hulett both with 8 kills.  Samantha Aulet set the ball well with 16 assists.  Hulett was great on defense with a game-high 20 digs.

Lakeview has another matchup with a fellow member of the Grand Valley district as they travel to Kirtland. Mineral Ridge concludes the regular season with a record of 20-2.

RAFFERTY LEADS FROM THE BACK ROW

GIRARD OH- Girard senior Abbie Rafferty is a perfect example of doing whatever it takes to lead your team. She has built such a huge trust in her coach Phil Walters, that when he moved her to right back this season she accepted it, and dove in to being the best she could be in that position. Rafferty is known for her defense, and that’s exactly what she brings to this volleyball team. Not a lot of people talk about Girard’s defense.  They get overshadowed by the Indians incredible firepower on offense. However, if you know volleyball you know that all the great hitters in the world don’t mean much if you can’t get the ball to the setter. Girard is in system way more than they aren’t, and Rafferty leading the way is a big reason why. The multiple sport athlete is spending her season soaking in everything she can while she can. She doesn’t plan to play sports in college, so this will be it. You know we had to take our last chance to shine a light on this tremendous senior leader.

Abbie was gracious enough to take time to sit down with Anthony Hartwig this week. They talk about what it’s like going through her senior year knowing it’s her last, future goals and much more. Don’t miss a chance to hear from the latest Girard Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

FEREN MAKES IT 1000 AS RAIDERS TAKE DOWN MOONEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- In a game that got pushed back a day, South Range wasn’t phased a bit. The Raiders went on the road to Mooney to make it two wins in a row. They took down the Cardinals in four sets (25-14 25-27 25-12 25-14)

The biggest moment for the Raiders was setter Jamie Feren reaching 1000 assists in her career. Maria Primavera had a stellar outing finishing with 24 kills and a pair of aces.  Sarah Kuhns led the Raiders in assists with 28. She also served up 4 aces.  Gianna Pasquale led the Raiders defense with 27 digs.

The regular season for the Raiders concludes with a record of 11-11. They will go on the road for their first tournament game as they travel to take on Columbiana.  Mooney has one more game on their regular season skate before tournaments. They will travel to Hoban on Saturday.

THE BAYHEM IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- The last time we talked to Maddie Bayus it was her sophomore season. She was a brand new varsity libero and she set the world on fire from the start. Now as a senior, you can really tell just how much she’s even grown since her sophomore season. She is one of the best liberos in the area hands down.  Being a libero is still tough like we said it was in the last article for Maddie, but she makes it look easy.  Bayus has always been good at reacting to big hits and moving into the right position. What she has added to her weapons as a player is a massively good serve receive, and a leadership in the back row. When you watch Lakeview’s offense you’ll quickly discover how important good passing is to their success. They want to dominate the middle. You can’t do that unless you pass well. Maddie is a great passer, she has always been a great passer, but now she is making everyone else in the back row a better passer as well.  She’s a senior now and this is our last chance to see her on the floor.

Maddie has been excellent on defense this season. She has racked up 304 digs on the season which is by far the team lead.  Teams want to attack her on the serve, and she has made them pay. She leads the team in serve receives with 337.  Serve to her at your own risk.

Maddie was kind enough to talk to us again this season and let us know even more about her. She talks with Anthony Hartwig about the biggest difference between sophomore and senior seasons, future plans, and much more. There’s still plenty of Bayhem in Lakeview. Don’t miss a minute of it in the latest Lakeview Player Profile only on YSN!
