HUBBARD AND MOONEY COME TOGETHER FOR MORE THAN A GAME

HUBBARD OH- It was a special night in Hubbard as the Eagles community along with Mooney’s came together to remember fallen members of both communities. Jillian Marian a Hubbard teach, and Mark Pelini a 2010 Mooney graduate, and assistant coach on the football team both passed away in a car accident last weekend. The week was hard on both schools as students and faculty alike grappled with the new reality. But tragedy can bring great things about, and on this night both Mooney and Hubbard showed just how strong people can be when they come together. The gym was packed, as stories and memories were shared from both sides about the departed beloved. On this night, it was way more than just a game.

After all was said and done, there was still volleyball to be played. Hubbard started the last week of the regular season off with a win in 4 sets over Mooney (25-16 21-25 25-23 25-16)

Hubbard still has to finish out NE8 play on Wednesday as they host Niles. Mooney returns to action on Tuesday with round 2 of the Holy War at home. Mooney won the first matchup at Ursuline in 4 sets.

THE ICE QUEEN FEARS NONE

WARREN, OH- If you really think about the background of Warren JFK Sophomore standout Izzy Mauro, the story of what she’s done- and her projected path isn’t that hard to believe.

Mauro is the younger sister of Michael Mauro, and while she’s incredibly proud of that- is starting to blaze her own trail.

Izzy, much like her brother, leaves no mercy on the court- as she’s ranked at the top of the state for the number of blocks she’s put up in 2022.  Mauro’s youthful leadership has helped JFK find their way out of some sticky situations this year- and along with her teammates- have found their identity heading into the postseason.

While all of that is well and good, she’s also hands-on when it comes to getting her hands dirty in the garage, as she received an early birthday present to fix up and cruise around town.

Check out more incredible talents throughout this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: The Ice Queen Fears None.

LET US TELL YOU ABOUT LATELL

GIRARD OH- Girard volleyball has climbed to enter themselves in the conversation of the best teams in our area.  The Indians are loaded with star level talent.  They carry with them a 1-2 punch on offense that is hard for most teams to defend.  One of the heads of that two headed monster is junior Bree Latell.  Bree is an outside hitter that brings a unique skill set to her position. What really makes her stand out in the area is the fact that she is left handed.  It makes it hard for teams to read the ball when it comes off a different hand. Plus, Latell has an easier time avoiding the pin on the right side attack.  Latell is not just dominant on offense, but is among the team leaders in digs.  She is taking in as much as she can from Girard’s current senior class so when her senior season comes, she’ll be ready to lead as well. It won’t hurt her ability that she already is a leader on the floor now. Her biggest leadership asset is her positive energy and emotion. She can always keep the team up.

Looking at Latell’s numbers right now she has collected 243 kills on the season. She averages 3.7 kills per set.  Her individual hitting percentage is .266.  Latell is also second on the team in digs with 153.  She adds 23 blocks to her season totals as well.

Bree took the time over the weekend to talk to YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her tremendous season and career to this point. They talk about playing as much volleyball as she does, how she doesn’t get gassed out, and much more. Check out the latest Girard Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN!

NOTHING STOPS BOOTH FROM GETTING THE KILL

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Mineral Ridge volleyball has all the right ingredients to a successful team. You take a great defense, mix it with an elite setter, and then add multiple attack options for her to get the ball to. Mineral Ridge has an assassin in the middle of the night in Olivia Booth. She gives their offense speed, as most great middles do. When the Rams are in system, you can bet they are going to try and get Olivia the ball.  She has made a tremendous impact in the Mineral Ridge program.  It is a program that won the MVAC and the district championship 2 years ago. Now after a season of bringing up some youth the Rams are right back in action.  Booth is a big reason why. She is so hard to defend. When you add that to her own defensive power at the net, she’s a massive key in Mineral Ridge’s success.

Olivia Booth currently sits at 129 kills on the season with an average of over 2 kills per set. She also has contributed 20 blocks to the Rams net presence. As a team Mineral Ridge has accumulated 78 blocks.

Olivia took the time this week to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig about her senior season. They talk about some of the goals she set this year, what has made Mineral Ridge such a special place to her, and so much more. Don’t miss the latest Mineral Ridge Volleyball Player Profile only on YSN.
