HERMITAGE PA; After a tough shootout 62-58 victory against Columbus Hartley last Thursday, the Fighting Irish of Ursuline were on the road and to some it may have been another big challenge as they hosted the Hickory Hornets who were in their first game of the season in Class AAA and came in as the defending District 10 Champions.
However, fans were not expecting the Irish to pull away as they did so right during the first quarter. Ursuline got on the board first when Brady Shannon handed the ball off to DeMarcus McElroy going nearly 60 plus yards to padre showing off that LaDainian Tomlinson speed, putting Ursuline up 8-0 after the muddle huddle two point conversion.
McElroy got his second touchdown of the night just a few possessions later when he took it in once again making it 16-0.
However, the Hornets would try to sting the Irish a bit as new junior quarterback Logan Woods on a fourth and goal at the six, found Ramarion Whitehead on a lob pass making it now 16-7.
However, that would be the only Hickory score as after that it was the Irish finding more gold with McElroy getting his third touchdown of the half going up 22-7 and Brady Shannon finding Will Burney just a couple possessions later on for a 30-yard strike with Burney showing some shifty moves. The score at the half was now 28-7.
The Irish kept on scoring even with the second string team led by Jack Erickson and Ty-Req Donlow in. Donlow who made the game winning tackle last week against Bishop Hartley got his first rushing touchdown as well as Erickson taking a QB option in making the final 50-7 in a shocking win for the Irish.
Rushing: DeMarcus McElroy made history today rushing over the 200 yard mark. Christian Lynch 8 carries for 24 yards. Ty’Req Donlow rushed for 22 yards.
Shannon: 127 passing yards and a touchdown to Will Burney.
Woods: 15 pass completions for 128 yards and one touchdown in the second to Ramarion Whitehead.
Sean Kennedy: eight carries for 37 yards.
Ursuline (2-0) heads to Chardon to take on the reigning Division III State Champion Hilltoppers (1-0). Hickory (0-1) will travel next Friday to take on the Girard Yellow Jackets (1-1).
