PALERMO NAMED 2022 YSN BOYS HOOPS COACH OF THE YEAR

EAST PALESTINE, OH- Cardinal Mooney Head Basketball Coach Carey Palermo has been selected as the 2022 Your Sports Network Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

In what will be widely described as an incredible postseason run, Coach Palermo led the Mooney Cardinals to District Championship and signature win after signature win over favored opponents.  On the year, the Cards finished 18-10 and were known best for their suffocating defense that limited some of the area’s top scorers throughout the campaign.

Palermo and the Cardinals also captured the Salem Christmas Classic Title this season when they defeated Neshannock in December.

Congratulations to Coach Palermo and the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals on a fantastic year, and the accolades they collected along the way including the 2022 YSN Coach of the Year.

MOONEY PULLS THE PLUG ON RED DEVILS RUN

CANTON OH- In the district championship, Cardinal Mooney beat up the number 1 team in their district Springfield, so looking at the number 2 team in Campbell was not intimidating. Mooney’s defense was up for the challenge again, they slowed down the high flying Devils offense in a 47-41 win.  The Cardinals have officially gotten further than last season. They lost in the regional semifinal last season to Lutheran East. Turns out that experience was a big factor in their win. MOONEY DEFENSE TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT

SALEM, OH – Mooney and Liberty matched up in the Division III District Semifinal on Tuesday night. As everyone knows, possession is key and turnovers hurt even worse in tournament play. For the Leopards, who do not usually turn the ball over much, were on the other side of the turnovers Tuesday. The Cardinals were able to grab control of the game early after forcing four straight turnovers in the first quarter and capitalizing on the mistakes by Liberty. In the second quarter, the Leopards were able to get some confidence with a late scoring run that cut the deficit down to 11. Luckily for Mooney, they have some hot shooters. Rocco Turner ended the first half with a three right at the buzzer, which led to an early start for Mooney once again in the second half with a quick three. The Leopards were not able to get the speed that Mooney played at under control and ultimately, that carried Mooney to victory, 64-62.

For Mooney, Mick Hergenrother led the way with 15 points. Jack Pepperney put up 12 and Drew Pecchia added 10 for the Cardinals.

For Liberty, Rushad Chambers led the way with 13. James Davis contributed 9 points for the Leopards.

Liberty finished up their season with a 16-7 record. Congratulations to the Leopards on a great season!

Mooney will move on to the District Final on Friday, as they will take on the number 1 seeded Springfield at Salem HS. Don’t miss it on YSN!

MOONEY SPOILS RAIDERS SENIOR NIGHT

CANFIELD OH- It was senior night in South Range. The Raiders had a blast honoring their 4 seniors. Aidan English, Mark Naples, Corey Penick, and Zach Smith were all honored in the pregame ceremony, along with the senior cheerleaders.

After the emotions of senior night, there was still Basketball to be played. The Raiders controlled the tempo for the first quarter, and most of the second. Well into that second frame, the Raiders led 12-8. Their patient offense has effectively grounded Mooney’s high flying offense. However, a string of live ball turnover that led to easy buckets fueled a 20-4 run between the first and second halves. Despite a push back from South Range to keep the Cardinals in striking distance, they couldn’t push back ahead. Mooney took away the 54-41 win.

Leading Mooney was Ashton O’Brien who scored 19 points. Mick Hergenrother wasn’t too far behind him, he was also in double figures with 17. Rocco Turner was the third Cardinal in double figures with 11.

South Range was paced by Ayden Leon with 10 points. Landon Moore put together a strong night with 9 points.

MOONEY MAKES IT A THREE PEAT IN THE STEEL VALLEY

YOUNGSTOWN OH- There is no better way to end the Steel Valley conference season than the championship coming down to the Holy War on a Friday night. Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline met on Friday night to kick off the boys/girls double header with the winner taking the Steel Valley Conference crown. It was Mooney coming out on top to secure their third straight conference championship.

For Mooney, they were led by Alaina Scavina who was two rebounds shy of a double double. She finished with 16 points, and 8 rebounds. Maria Fire did in fact secure a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Angelina Rotunno celebrated her final matchup with Ursuline by scoring 9. Sophia Diorio added 7.

The Irish were paced by Alayna Smith with a game-high 18 points. Lilly Scott was also in double figures with 12 points.
