CHANEY ROPES IN DISTRICT CROWN

POLAND, Ohio –

Almost two years ago, the Poland Bulldogs defeated the freshly re-established Chaney Boys Basketball program at Boardman High School for the Youngstown District title. While Chaney wouldn’t come away with the victory that day, the result would spark a fire in the basketball program.

Throughout the 2019-2020 season, the Cowboys adopted the rallying cry of “Unfinished Business.” The Chaney program had unfinished business and wanted to make it back to the district final. They would, defeating Struthers 53-50, earning the right to move on and face Akron Saint VincentSaint Mary in the regional semi-finals. Then, COVID-19 struck, and it seemed as if the world had stopped turning.

With their season cut short, Chaney never got their shot at Saint V’s. Coming into the 2020-2021 season, there was more unfinished business for the Cowboys. Their first step was to repeat as district champions and in today’s matchup between Chaney and Poland, the Cowboys would not only accomplish their first goal, but get revenge in the process.

On route to their 70-48 victory, three different Chaney Cowboys put up double digits in their win: Sharrod Taylor – 26, Cam Lawrence – 14, Josiah Gonzalez – 12.

UP NEXT:

With the district title secured, the Chaney Cowboys (12-6) will now move on to face off with the winner of the Northeast 4 District, the Gilmour Academy Lancers (10-9).

While it has been an easy ride to this point in the postseason for the Cowboys, winning each game by at least 22 points, the Lancers had to scrap and claw through their district. An upset win over #3 seed Warrensville Heights and a district final win over #11 seed Padua Franciscan, the Lancers have won their last two games by a combined 5-points.

Chaney and Gilmour Academy will vie for the chance at a Regional title Thursday the 11th at Barberton High School. Tip off is scheduled for 8:15 pm but could be delayed due to the Saint Vincent Saint Mary and Struthers game starting at 5:30 pm.

COWBOYS RIDE INTO THIRD STRAIGHT DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

The playoff atmosphere was in full effect on the west side of Youngstown as the Chaney Cowboys(11-6) looked to make it to their third straight district final.

Both teams started off hot, putting the score tied at 7 all with half a quarter to play. The Cowboys proceeded to go on a 26-0 run to blow the game wide open.

Chaney continued their scoring onslaught and defensive pressure through the end of the first half and into the start of the second.

West Branch (18-7) wouldn’t go easily into the night however, putting together a strong defensive effort in the third quarter led by their stout defense in the post. Big men Andrew Coffee and Josh Gregory came out of the half with an attitude, poised to protect the rim.

Despite their efforts, Chaney’s big run proved to be too much. Each time the Warriors would gain momentum, the Cowboys would steal it right back with a run of their own. The Cowboys earned their spot in their third straight disctict final, winning big, 73-41.

TAYLOR’S 1000TH POINT COMES WITH CHANEY’S SECTIONAL WIN

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Another playoff game, another victory by 30 plus points for the Chaney Cowboys (10-6). Although Chaney headed into the half up by 18 points, the consensus was the Cowboys played a sloppy first half.

Sharrod Taylor’s eclipsing of the 1000-point mark and becoming just the 2nd player in Chaney history to reach 1000 points highlighted the half, while Clive Wilson’s two second quarter dunks played second fiddle.

If Chaney’s first half play was considered sloppy, their second half play was the complete opposite, sharp. Picking up their defensive pressure, the Cowboys held the visiting Edgewood Warriors (5-10) to just 14 points in the half.

To match their defensive prowess, the Showtime Cowboys brought it on the offensive side as well. Five different players scored for the Cowboys in their 30point 3rd quarter. Sharrod Taylor led the way with 10, while Josiah Gonzalez and Cam Lawrence added 7 and 6 of their own, respectively.

The only thing that could stop the Showtime Cowboys was the running clock. Instituted in the 4th quarter, the running clock held Chaney to just 14 points in the final quarter, leaving the Cowboys shy of the century mark, but still victorious, 91-43.

LEADING SCORERS:

Chaney

Sharrod Taylor 30 points

Josiah Gonzalez – 15 points

Cam Lawrence 12 points

Edgewood

Isaiah Harris12 points

Ben Welthy – 11 points

NO STOPPING THE COWBOYS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

Facing just their second opponent with a losing record this season, the Chaney Cowboys (9-6)poured it on the visiting West Geauga Wolverines (0-10) in their first-round matchup, winning big 83-45.

It was going to be a tall task for the visiting Wolverines to try and pick up their first win of the season. By the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines were able to hold Chaney to just 14 points and trailed by only 7.

The Cowboys slow start would not last long however, as 6 different players would put points up in their 21-point second quarter, giving them a 41-20 lead going into the half.

With the lead firmly in hand and expanding throughout the third quarter, the question for the Cowboys became, how long will they continue to pour it on. Coach McGaughy let his players cook, keeping them prepared for another district title run.

Three different Cowboys totaled double digit points on the night, two of them coming off the bench. All but one of the Chaney Cowboys who played in last nights routing of West Geauga put points on the board.

LEADING SCORERS:

Chaney

Sharrod Taylor 22 points

Josiah Gonzalez – 17 points

DaVinci McDowell 14 points

West Geauga

Cam Rogal12 points

COWBOYS GALLUP AWAY FROM URSULINE

YOUNGSTOWN OH- When we saw these teams last time, it was the Cowboys of Chaney who had the lead since the first quarter, and even though Ursuline nearly came back to win, the Cowboys would hang on with a 67-62 victory.  This time, it was the Irish of Ursuline who needed a bounceback after losing to the East Golden Bears on Tuesday, while the Cowboys looked to sweep the Irish on the season.  Ursuline would also have to play without star sophomore Terrance Pankey who was out with an injury.

First Half

In the first quarter, we saw the Cowboys get off to a five nothing run early thanks to points from seniors Cam Lawrence and Sharrod Taylor who drained a three,  Sophomore and football star Jason Hewlett would also see some action getting four points in the first quarter.  For Ursuline, they cut the lead early with four points inside the perimeter from junior forward Brady Shannon and two points from guards Jakylan Irving and Will Burney.  However the irish would be down by nine at the end of one 17-8.

The second quarter would see a little change however as Vince Flauto for Ursuline who was getting the start hit a three cutting the lead to six.  Forward Freshman Jaden Payne wearing the number of the Goat Michael Jordan came into the game and sunk in two buckets while drawing the and-ones as he would make two of them.  Taylor would once again be the leading scorer for the Cowboys as well as Quincy Jones who scored two points on a field goal.  Chaney would go into the half now up by four 29-25.

Second Half

The second half was once again a back to back battle between two teams as Geno Lucente hit a corner three, but Chaney kept on finding their players wide open as the Irish tired to full court pressure.  That resulted in two dunks by Jones.  In the end however, the Cowboys would pull away and get their eighth win of the season as they would continue to make free throws after a technical on the Irish and would not look back,  sweeping the Irish once more with a 63-55 victory.

Ursuline Stats

DeMarcus McElroy had a point but was playing hard defense all night, Brady Shannon led the Irish with 23 points, Jaden Payne came off the bench with 12 points, Vince Flauto had eight, Geno Lucente had five, Will Burney had four and Jakylan Irving finished with two.

Chaney Stats

Sharrod Taylor’s fast speed led to him scoring 21 points. Cameron Lawrence finished with 17 points.  Quincey Jones with those two dunks finished with 12 points.  Jason Hewlett finished with seven points.  Clive Wilson had four and Josiah Gonzalez finished with two points.

CHANEY COMES OUT ON TOP IN OVERTIME

BOARDMAN OH- Two of the boys basketball titans of Youngstown met up on Tuesday night to test their strength. Chaney traveled to Boardman to take on the Spartans, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Regulation wasn’t enough as the Cowboys snuck away with a 60-58 win in overtime. Chaney forced a late turnover and got the fast break layup that proved to be the game winner.

Chaney was led by Cam Lawrence finishing the game with 19 points. Sharrod Taylor was also in double figures for the Cowboys with 12 points.

The Spartans were paced by senior DJ Evans who put up a solid 15 point performance. Anthony Hightower contributed 12 points to the cause.

CHANEY HOLDS OFF IRISH COMEBACK

YOUNGSTOWN OH- Coming into this game, many thought that the Ursuline Irish were once again going to have a big night and continue this long winning streak as they just came off of one of the best games of the year with that buzzer against East.  However, they would have to get past the Chaney Cowboys who came in with a record of four and five, with a recent loss to Massilon Jackson 66-63 as coach Mcgaughy and his team were looking to go back to an even .500.

The first few minutes of the first quarter saw the Cowboys and the Irish play mostly defensive ball before chaney for the first points of the game.  Ursuline would answer back with points of their own, but they would then struggle with turning the ball over as Chaney took advantage and led big at the end of the first quarter 26-9.  The same could have been said then for the second quarter as senior forward Quincy Jones had six points, while senior guards Cameron Lawrence got four points in total.  Clive Wilson also had two in the second as the Cowboys were pulling off the upset and continuing the streak against the Irish, up 38-18 at the half.  In the games that both have played in basketball since 2018, the Irish have not won against the Cowboys, but were hoping to limit the turnovers and get their 10th win of the season and their first against Chaney.

In the second half, we saw the Irish team that we have been seeing all season long as the pressure started to come a bit and Ursuline was closing in thanks to six points by Terrance Pankey and Vince Flauto.  The lead was now 52-33 at the end of the third in what was a comfortable lead soon turned into a game.  Both teams were physical in the second half and the Irish were able to cut it down to five thanks to a technical foul.  However in the end, it was too little too late as the Cowboys were riding on a lead the whole time and came away with the 67-62 victory but lost one of their players late in senior Sharrod Taylor who left the game with a lower body injury.

Chaney Stats

Sharrod Taylor finished with seven field goals inside the paint, a three pointer, 5-8 on free throws and 22 points.  Cameron Lawrence finished with 17 points, five two’s, one three and went 4-6 on free throws.  Clive Wilson had three field goals inside the paint and finished with eight points.  Josiah Gonzalez finished with seven points, Quincy Jones had six, Davinci McDowell had three and Jason Hewlett had two.

Ursuline Stats

Terrance Pankey finished with 15 points, having seven made field goals inside the paint and had a free throw.  Vince Flauto made four three’s and was a perfect two for two on free throws, finishing with 14 points.  Brady Shannon had 11 points, making three field goals inside the paint while shooting five for six on free throws.  Jakylan Irving had eight points, DeMarcus McElroy had seven points, while Will Burney, Buzzer beater star Tyler Beck and Jaden Payne combined for seven points.
