CHANEY FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 8) WITH CHRIS AMILL

Week seven saw Coach Chris Amill and the Chaney Cowboys travel north to take on the University School Prepper; unfortunately, the ‘Boys came up just a little bit short. This week, however, Chaney will play host with a Saturday showdown, against the Howland Tigers.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, caught up with Coach Amill this week to see what he and his staff have “up their sleeves” as the 2019 football season begins to wrap up but also what the Cowboys have in store for Tigers this Saturday.

LADY BULLDOGS ICE CHANEY IN POST SEASON PREP

EAST PALESTINE, OH-  It was a special night from the onset on Thursday in East Palestine.  Four members of the East Palestine Volleyball team were recognized for their service to the program, and as seniors, they took the floor in East Palestine for one final time.

It was one to remember for the Lady Bulldogs as they acted as a buzzsaw through timber against Chaney in straight sets, 25-10, 25-5, and 25-1.

McKenna Griffith led the charge as she had 14 points, 9 aces, and a dig.  Sophomore Big Dog of the Valley nominee for this week, Paige Snyder more than held her own with 18 points, 5 aces and a pair of digs.  Malynn Bistarkey was an assassin in the front row with 10 kills while Morgan Cheurco had a double-double with 10 points, 21 helpers, 6 aces and 2 digs.

A special moment prior to the game as the Gorby’s MVP for Thursday, Liv Figley’s Dad (Dave Figley) played the National Anthem on his guitar on his daughter’s Senior Night.

East Palestine now turns its attention to the postseason and awaits the winner of Lake Center Christian, and Liberty.  The game is hosted by Salem High School.

RIVALRY RENEWED, URSULINE TOUGHS OUT FIRST WIN OVER CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- For Ursuline Coach Dan Reardon, it was a jubilant moment, and one that was months in the making as his Irish were able to lock in their first victory over cross-town rival, Chaney.  Ursuline posted a 27-26 nailbiting victory over the Cowboys in the Steel Valley Conference Matchup-the first for the Irish since the conference has reformed in 2019.

However, it wasn’t exactly picture perfect for the Irish.

Up 20-14 in the second half, Chaney breakout star Deron Gilbert Jr. went 60 yards on an impressive run after the catch to put the Cowboys up by 12.  Gilbert would finish with 7 receptions measuring out 146 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Just as impressive, Delshawn Petrosky went 16-28 with those same two scores.  It was the turnovers the Cowboys had that allowed the Irish to stay in the game.

Three interceptions and a costly fumble was the cost of doing business for Chaney.  The Irish’s Andrew Barkett was able to pounce on that fumble in the endzone putting Ursuline down just 5 points with just under ten minutes remaining.

Matt Reardon stepped up under center after Brady Shannon left with an injury- and led the Irish downfield where Trent Hill bowled his way in from 2 yards out into the endzone to give the Irish a 27-26 lead with just over five minutes left in the game.

Chaney tried as they might, but the Irish defense arrived late like a boa constrictor, suffocating the Cowboy offense- and forcing a pair of interceptions to seal their first victory of 2019.

Chaney will look to bounce back against University School next Saturday at 2 pm, while Ursuline packs the bus and heads to Columbus to take on Bishop Watterson this Friday.

CHANEY FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 6) WITH CHRIS AMILL

Week five was no easy match up for Coach Chris Amill and the Chaney Cowboys. The ‘Boys traveled up to Warrensville Heights, just outside of Cleveland, and came home with a hard fought 14-8 victory which puts Chaney at 3-2. Up next for the Cowboys is another road test but this time, it’ll be in their own backyard, as they will travel to Stambaugh Stadium, on the campus of Youngstown State, to take on the Ursuline Fighting Irish.

YSN’s own, Steve Leslie, caught up with Coach Amill this week to discuss last week’s victory and also what the Cowboys need to do to take care of business against Ursuline in a classic Youngstown battle in the Steel Valley Conference.

CHANEY ESCAPES WITH WIN AGAINST WARRENSVILLE

CLEVELAND, OH – It felt like a must win game for both teams, Chaney coming off their worse loss of the season at the hands of Maple Heights, and the Warrensville Tigers looking for their first W of the season. Freshman Jason Hewlett got the start in this game instead of Delshawn Petrosky, but with inexperience comes growing pains. On their first possession, Hewlett would take a huge shot and get intercepted on his second attempt. It only took the Tigers one play to punch it in for a score, followed by a successful two point conversion.

Both teams struggled mightily to generate offense, as the defenses showed their teeth through most of the second half. Multiple fumbles were forced, Chaney losing two of them. But the Tigers failed to capitalize as running back Nellion Wilson was held in check. It wasn’t until Petrosky checked in late in the second when the Chaney offense finally sprung to life, with a massive 64 yard run from KeyShawn Davis. Fellow running back Marshall Herron would take the next carry 20 yards to the house and Chaney would tie things up moments before halftime, 8-8.

A scoreless third quarter featured more stellar play from both teams’ defenses, the second fumble from Chaney negated a nice drive that made it’s way deep into Tiger territory. Senior QB Jerome Lee Jr, the very next play, ripped off a 65 yard scamper up the near sideline. But the Cowboys defense would hold and force a turnover on downs.

Chaney had weathered the storm, numerous turnovers and poor field position. And with that tenacity comes results. With 5 minutes left in the game, still tied at 8, Marshall Herron would score again from 20 yards out and give the ‘Boys their first lead of the game. On the ensuing possession for the Tigers, it was Herron again, but this time on defense. A huge interception on 4th down sealed the deal, and Chaney got back into the win column with a final score of 14-8. No rest for the Cowboys though, as they get set to take on in city rival Ursuline in what will be a marquee matchup here on YSN!

CHANEY FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 5) WITH CHRIS AMILL

Week four matched the Chaney Cowboys up with Maple Heights and unfortuantely the Cowboys were on the wrong end of a great game. Coach Amill still has the Cowboys in a very good position to keep the season alive and he has the ‘Boys ready to go for their week five match up against Warrensville Heights.

Everyone’s favorite, Steve Leslie, had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Chris Amill this week to see what the Cowboys need to do to get back to their winning ways and what to expect from the Cowboys in week five.

All that and more on this week’s episode of Chaney Football Coach’s Corner!

CHANEY FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 4) WITH CHRIS AMILL

Coach Amill and the Chaney Cowboys are starting to roll! Week three saw the Cowboys travel to Leopard Stadium and shut out Liberty 40-0. Week four will prove to be a tough test for Chaney as they hit the road again and look to bump their winning streak up to three, as they take on the Mustangs of Maple Heights.

YSN’s own Steve Leslie caught up with Coach Amill this week to discuss what the Cowboys have been doing recently to produce some wins on the field but also what to expect this week against a Maple Heights team that is also coming off a week three win.

COWBOY DEFENSE RIDES HIGH, SHUTS OUT LIBERTY

LIBERTY, OH- The comeback season for the Chaney Cowboys continues to pick up steam, picking up a win on the road against the Liberty Leopards.

Following their impressive performance last week against Beechwood, Coach Amill’s team didn’t let their performance get to their heads as they prepared to take on the Leopards, a team that many of the Chaney players are familiar with, being separated by less than seven miles.
The game started out slow for both offenses. Quarterback Delshawn Petrosky for the Cowboys struggled to find his mark, and opposing QB Jaime Melton could not find any running room. Late in the first, Chaney forced their first of three fumbles, giving them excellent field position. Petrosky would keep it himself on three straight runs to net the first points of the game, Chaney lead 6-0.
But it was in the second quarter where Petrosky began picking the Leopard defense apart. A couple of quick passes to his favorite target, Marquan Herron, as well as running back Darius Humbert’s physical running style, Chaney put back to back scoring drives together. The Cowboys would carry a 20-0 lead into the half.
In an unbelievable play, Petrosky managed to turn a botched snap from the center into a huge play, as he would recover, find Marquan Herron down the field, and hit him in stride for a 60-yard touchdown pass, his second passing touchdown and third overall. Petrosky would finish with 193 passing yards to go along with 69 rushing yards. Herron had 3 catches for 84 yards and the touchdown.
But it was the defense that truly shined. Led by Rashawn Perkins inside, the Cowboy defense shut down a potent running attack that had just rushed for 270 yards in the previous week to just 72 yards on 44 carries. The Leopards were 1-12 on third down with only 4 total first downs. An incredible performance from an emerging and stout defense.
Chaney is on the road again next week as they take on Maple Heights.
