COLUMBIANA VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JENNIFER MARTIN

COLUMBIANA OH- The Clippers volleyball program is coming of a very impressive 20 win season in 2020. They made it all the way to the district finals where they eventually fell to mineral Ridge. The Clippers lost 4 seniors, which may not sound like a ton but statistically they lost over 300 kills, their team leader in digs, and their team leader in assists. So yes, there are some key parts missing for the Clippers coming into the new season, but they do return their team leader in kills in Tori Long who finished 2020 with 229 kills. Head coach Jennifer Martin is still very optimistic about the Clippers ability to succeed in 2021. Columbiana opens the season against McDonald on Saturday August 21st.

Coach Martin took the time to hop on to YSN’s Running Point this week to preview the 2021 season. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about replacing the missing pieces, community outreach, and much more. Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Jennifer Martin is live.

QUAKERS GET ONE LAST TUNE UP BEFORE TOURNAMENTS

SALEM OH-

The final regular season game at Ray Reasbeck field featured a lot of offense from both teams and another Quaker victory to put a cap on the 2021 campaign with an 11-8 win over Columbiana Monday.

The Quakers once again got off to a hot start Monday night as they put up 4 runs in the first inning to grab control of the game. A pair of run scoring singles by juniors Corey Riesen and Hunter Carlisle with a run scored on a passed ball sandwiched in between gave the Quakers the start they needed.

After a 1-2-3 first inning junior pitcher Cayden Burt got roughed up in the second inning giving up 6 runs on 5 hits, a walk and an error in the field. But Burt bounced back after the rocky second inning not allowing another Columbiana hit and if it wasn’t for Sophomore Gavin Wilms needing some work in the final two innings, probably would have finished the game for the Quakers with another strong performance.

Speaking of Wilms, the big sophomore gave the lead back to Salem in the second after fellow sophomore Donnie Oesch led things off with a double and scored on a bases loaded walk, Wilms hit a mammoth 3 run blast into the student section in left to make it an 8-6 game.

Salem would add 3 more runs in the 3rd make it 11-6 and that’s the way the ballgame would end with Wilms on the mound to shut down the regular season with the team’s 23rd victory of the year. The Quakers finished the regular season 23-3 and will host Louisville in the sectional finals on Wednesday at Ray Reasbeck Field at 5 pm.

POTTERS PULL AWAY FROM COLUMBIANA TO GRAB MOMENTUM

COLUMBIANA OH- The last time these two teams met, it went into extra innings.  This time, the exact same thing happened, but, who would be the one to come out on top at Firestone Park as the 16-7 Columbiana Clippers took on the 10-12 East Liverpool Potters.

The first three innings of the game saw the fielding play the advantage with both teams not giving each other any inch.  However, the top of the fourth is when things changed.  The Potters got the first runs when Paxton Grimes singled on a ground ball to center field, having freshman Jake Smith head home.  They would get two more runs when Evan Tice and Grimes once again scored from a wild pitch and a grounder making it three to nothing.

However, the Clippers didn’t go away.  They would get three unanswered runs from Cameron Sloan who went home off of a ground ball,  Seth Spooner who got home from a line drive off of Logan Hoschar.  The talented fielding on each end continued as once again these two would head to extra innings.

The Potters got another run in the top of the eighth as Mason Ludwig had a pop up which sent Tice home once again.  The next run was then from Devin Toothman who scored from Trent Davis double to left field making it five to three.

After a few outs, it was Columbianas turn in a do or die situation.  The inning would come into favor as junior Brady Krindler hit a ground ball which reached an error by the senior second baseman Derek Klein.  McElwain would score from that play cutting it now to only a one run game with the Clippers sending it into the ninth inning and going 2-0 in the series.

However, this time extra innings did not go their way as Trevor Dearing popped a fly ball to left field which was caught by Anderson Fitch giving East Liverpool the big upset five to four and some momentum heading into their last game and the tournament.

Jake Smith led the Potters to a victory allowing three hits and one run, striking out one and walking one. Derek Klein started the game and Paxton Grimes got some pitching time too.

Logan Hoschar took the loss for the Clippers, surrendering two runs on one hit over an inning, striking out one and walking one.  Zach Pleska started the game on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out 13 and walking one.

Up Next

East Liverpool (11-12) look to end their regular season at .500 as they face rival Beaver Local (10-10).  These two teams are tied in a series this season, as East Liverpool got a 12-1 victory but the Beavers won the first time around 7-5.  Tomorrow at one at East Liverpool, we see who wins the series.  Game is set for 1pm Saturday.

Columbiana (16-8) will head to Salem on Monday the 17th to face the Quakers (21-3).  Game will be at 5pm.
