CLIPPERS GET REVENGE ON SOUTHERN

COLUMBIANA OH- It wasn’t a happy trip for the Clippers to Salineville the last time Columbiana and Southern Local met on the volleyball floor. Now, with plenty of games under the belt since then the two teams met up again. This time the venue was Columbiana, and the Clippers enjoyed some home cooking. Columbiana dominates the final set of a five set thriller to earn the victory.  (25-21 27-29 25-19 23-25 15-1)

Ellie Jackson earned another double double on the season with 13 kills, 24 digs, and 23 assists.  She wasn’t the only one as Cameron Perkins put together a triple double as well going for 11 kills, 27 digs, and 19 assists.  Ava Heinrich led the Clippers offense with 15 kills, and used 18 digs to complete a double double.

Southern was led by Ashley Shroades with 22 kills on the night.  Aleah Bach was also in double figure kills with 11.  Rylee Mellott had a historic night in setting. She finished with 62 assists, which ranks 10th best in OHSAA history for assists in a match.  No one has had more than 62 assists in a match since 2015, according to the OHSAA record book.  Kyla McCulley led the defense with 14 digs.

Columbiana looks to build on their winning ways on Thursday as they host Lisbon. Southern has to bounce back quick as they square off with league leading Wellsville on Wednesday.

UNITED TAKES CARE OF THE CLIPPERS

HANOVERTON OH- United came into week six action looking to maintain their edge as the EOAC conference schedule is full steam ahead. The Eagles offense sharpened that edge all evening as they took care of Columbiana 47-7 Friday night in Hanoverton.

The starting offense for United had to shake off some early rust having only played a little more than a quarter the previous week. Luke Courtney capped off a stalled opening drive connecting on a 34 yard field goal as the Eagles took the early 3-0 lead. Columbiana, dealing with numerous injuries, was down to their 3rd and 4th options at quarterback and struggled to get anything consistent going on offense. The Eagles offense would take advantage of what their defense was providing. Already leading 10-0, Luke Courtney and Grant Knight would hook up on a 50 yard touchdown pass and the Eagles were suddenly up 17-0.

Following another Clippers punt the Eagles took over deep in their own territory, looking to add to their lead. It was the Columbiana defense however who added to the scoring as Caleb Buchheit would intercept a Courtney pass taking it 33 yards to the house and the Clippers had life at 17-7. United squashed the Clippers momentum immediately as Jenson Baker would score from a yard out, capping a 50 second scoring drive and the Eagles were up 24-7. The combination of Courtney to Knight would connect again for the 2nd time increasing the lead to 31-7 on the next possession. Courtney would then tack on his 2nd field goal of the game from 32 yards making the score 34-7 at the half. Out of the locker room the Eagles offense was rinse-repeat as Courtney and Knight would do it for the 3rd time on a 25 yard connection as the score grew to 40-7.

Gavin Berger added a 22 yard touchdown run to cap off the night for the Eagles victory. Columbiana (0-6, 0-3) will head back home next Friday welcoming league leader Valley Christian to Firestone Park. United (5-1, 2-1) takes their high powered offense on the road traveling to East Palestine.

SOUTHERN TAKES CLIPPERS BEST PUNCH

SALINEVILLE, OH- Every once and awhile you will witness a game that looks like a blowout on the scoreboard, but on the field it felt a lot closer than a blowout. That is exactly how the Southern and Columbiana game felt Friday night as the Idians hosted the Clippers and came away with a 51-14 victory.

Southern came out the gate quick and hot, scoring on their first two drives. Columbiana would eventually get some momentum with an interception from Parker Bush and followed that up with a touchdown by Jesse Szmara to make it 16-7. That momentum would not last long as Southern’s Colton Soukup found a hole in the Clippers defense and took one to the house to give the Indians a 24-7 lead at the break.

Columbiana forced a switch in the roles by coming out of the break hot and scoring early to make it 24-14 early in the third. That was the last time the Clippers would find the endzone as it was all Southern thanks to Soukup’s amazing grab for a 84-yard pick-six. After that momentum swing, the Indians would not look back and separated themselves from the Clippers more later in the second half and would walk away with the win.

Southern moves to 5-0 on the season as they will host Wellsville Friday night. Columbiana moves to 0-4 on the season as they will travel to United on Friday.
