CLIPPERS COME BACK STRONG

COLUMBIANA OH- The  early season EOAC matchup between Columbiana and United was a contest between youth vs experience. The youth of Columbiana came through in victory as the Clippers claimed a straight set 25-12 ,26-24 ,25-15 home win over United.

Columbiana looked to right the ship after an opening defeat on Saturday, quickly racing out to a 14-1 early lead. United early on in their first game of the season just could not overcome the early deficit on their way to surrendering the first set. Clippers head coach Jennifer Martin was pleased with her team’s quick start “We definitely had an advantage this being our second game of the season. The nerves were gone and the girls were excited to play their first league game.”

The second set saw both teams exchange points much of the way as United started to gain confidence.  Columbiana would take a 24-20 lead late, but United was able to reel off 4 straight tying it at 24. Columbiana would go on to squash any thoughts of a comeback in the second and would go on to finish off the Eagles in the third set.  Coach Martin on her team’s ability to counter the height of United “I thought we tipped the ball well tonight. Our girls did a great job of finding the open space on the floor.”

The Clippers Ava Heinrich turned in a stellar all around performance with 10 kills, 13 digs, 8 points.  Ellie Jackson filled the stat sheet contributing 18 assists, 6 kills, 5 digs, and 6 aces.  Teammates Kelsey Cameron and Cameron Perkins held down the defense with 10 and 8 digs respectively. Brighleigh Kocanjer also contributed15 points in the victory for Columbiana.

United was led by Grace Knight  with 9 digs and 4 kills while Olivia Grubb added 15 assists and 7 digs.  Both teams will be back in EOAC action Thursday as United travels to East Palestine while Columbiana will host Leetonia.

BLUE DEVILS PASS EARLY ROAD TEST

COLUMBIANA OH- The McDonald Blue Devils have quickly become one of the top volleyball programs in the area.  The program in just its 4th year of existence traveled to Columbiana looking to improve on the 16 wins they achieved just a season ago.

The Clippers  coming off their own successful 17 win season entered Saturday’s contest looking to fill in the gap of talent lost to graduation. It was the experience of the Blue Devils that proved its might on Saturday winning in 4 sets 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19. The first two sets of the match showcased the talent of both teams as they exchanged set victories. The 3rd set the Blue Devils leaned on their experience to separate themselves from the Clippers en-route to the 4 set victory.

“During that 3rd set our youth played against us.  We have a lot of talent on this team but there’s a mental aspect to this game as well we need to work on.” ” That being said McDonald is a very good team, I was very happy with how we played defensively”-Columbiana Head Coach Jennifer Martin.

Gianna Constantino and Maria Rasile kept that defense busy all day.  Constantino led the way with 20 kills and 23 digs. Rasile contributed 15 kills and 20 digs of her own. Megan Klockner contributed to the Blue Devil offense with 42 sets. Columbiana’s Ellie Jackson had a great all around performance 7 kills, 18 digs, 21 sets. Cameron Perkins also contributed a strong performance with 9 kills, 25 digs, 14 sets. Maryn Hepler and Ava Heinrich solidified the Clippers defense with 18 and 24 digs respectively.

The Clippers coach knows the season has a long way to go ” One game at a time we’ll put this behind us and reset at practice on Monday”  McDonald looks to continue their wining ways on Monday as they travel to Maplewood. Columbiana will welcome in EOAC rival United on Tuesday.

ROCKETS FLY HIGHER THAN CLIPPERS

LOWELLVILLE OH- Lowellville put on a show Friday night as their offense flexed on the way to a 55-14 victory over Columbiana.

Vinny Ballone was electric just as everyone expected him to be. He threw for six touchdowns, and ran for another. He finished 14/19 with 296 yards. He also ran 9 times for 136 total yards.  One of his many highlights was a 73 yard strike to Brayden Dabney.  Anthony Lucente was the benefactor of a 43 yard touchdown pass.

Kian Hartley had a big play for the Clippers with a 30 yard touchdown run. Then in the 4th quarter Liam Surgenavic found the end zone. It would be all Columbiana would get as the Rockets defense held tough.

Lowellville will hit the road in Week 2 to play Campbell while Columbiana hosts McDonald for their home opener.

COLUMBIANA VOLLEYBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JENNIFER MARTIN

COLUMBIANA OH- What is that in the sky? It’s another edition of Columbiana Clipper Volleyball swooping in for a successful season to add to their collection. There is a tradition of success at Columbiana that has remained strong through Jennifer Martin taking the reigns. Coach Martin is back to head up another exciting group of players. With a lot of returners, Coach Martin is replacing the faces they’ve lost by putting players in new roles. This season the Clippers will certainly show off their versatility as athletes as they find new ways to shine.

Coach Martin took time out of her day to hop on to YSN’s Running Point to help us get a good preview of the Clippers season. She talks to Ty Bartell and Anthony Hartwig about what fans should be most excited about, some of the people behind her making the program great, and much more. Get ready for take off with Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Jennifer Martin.

RAPPING IT UP THE RIGHT WAY

COLUMBIANA OH- The senior year of Julia Rapp at Columbiana is almost at its end. She has already gotten a diploma, and now the only thing left is a place on the podium in the state track meet. Julia qualified for state in the 100, finishing 2nd in the region, as part of the 4×100 relay finishing 2nd in the region, and in the 200 where she placed 5th in the region.

This will be Rapp’s second year going to state. Now her expectations are much higher than last season. She’s not just happy to be there anymore, she wants to succeed. It wouldn’t be much of a shock if she went down to Columbus and found success. Julia finds success in every sport she plays. She is one of the premiere outside hitters in the district for volleyball, she hit .500 for softball, and of course she’s a great track star.

Rap has made the decision to continue running track at the next level. She is signed on as a division 1 athlete at Cleveland State. She’ll be running with and against some of the top programs in the region in the Horizon League which excels at track and field.  She’s also going from a small rural down to the middle of downtown Cleveland.

Rapp took the time to be on YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her senior year at Columbiana and Al the things she’s been able to accomplish. She talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Richie Juliano about the high and lows of her career, playing two sports in the same season, and so much more. CLIPPERS PITCHING STANDS TALL AGAIN

Celebrating his 18th birthday, senior Riley McElwain led the way in shutting out the Springfield Tigers in 6.2 innings of work as the Clippers (20-7) prevailed 2-0 to move on to its first district championship game since 2011.

McElwain struck out nine and allowed four hits to pick up his fourth win of the year.  McElwain also held the Springfield run game at bay, picking off three runners at first.  Seth Spooner came into the game with two runners on and two outs in the top of the seventh, and was able to strike out the Tiger hitter looking to end the game and earn his fourth save of the year.

The Tigers and Clippers played three and a half scoreless frames before Zachary Pleska broke the tie with a deep shot over the right field fence to give Columbiana the 1-0 lead.  That score stayed true until the sixth inning when the Clippers added a big insurance run.  Alex Eusebio was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Trevor Dearing would pinch run for Eusebio and move to second on a ground out by Pleska.  Following a Clipper strikeout, Brady Kridler flared a ball to left that brought Dearing home giving Columbiana the 2-0 lead.

Up next for the Clippers will be South Range in the district championship game.  The game is scheduled for a 5 PM start at Wilder Field in Niles.

KRIDLER CARES

COLUMBIANA, OH- Clipper Baseball standout Brady Kridler has already overcome so much in his life.  Some that he’s opened up to, and some he still working on.

One of the biggest factors in helping him through these obstacles has been his family and his love of baseball.

The Clippers have been a perfect landing spot for the senior first baseman, as he’s been able to build great relationships with the players, and coaching staff who are understanding of Kridler’s past, and are focused on preparing their teammate for a successful future, one that Brady Kridler has been bettering himself every day for.

Kridler has not just turned into an exceptional teammate, but an authentic and genuine great young man.  For most, just getting through the hard times would be enough, but Brady has come to expect more from himself- he wants to give back, he wants to contribute, and he whole-heartedly cares about those in his life.  From his family on the field to his family at home- Kridler has been able to enjoy his time as a Clipper because he’s learned to care for those who cared so much for him.

At the end of the day, Brady is making this more than a fleeting moment in time, this sport, this team, this family means more because at the end of the day, Kridler Cares.

CLIPPERS GET A BATTLE FROM JEFFERSON, BUT MOVE ON

COLUMBIANA OH-  Columbiana defeated Jefferson Area 3-0 in Wednesday’s sectional final as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Seth Spooner struck out Logan Saksa to finish off the game.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Columbiana  pitchers struck out ten, while Kirkland Lambert sat down nine.

In the second inning, the Clippers got their offense started. Devin Daugherty drove in one when he singled.

A single by Colin Reid in the second inning was a positive for Jefferson.

Riley McElwain pitched Columbiana to victory. The lefty went six innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out nine. Spooner threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Spooner recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Lambert took the loss for the Falcons. The pitcher surrendered three runs on five hits over six innings, striking out nine.

Daugherty went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Columbiana in hits. The Clippers didn’t commit a single error in the field. Colin Keleman had the most chances in the field with ten.

PJ Modzelewski led Jefferson with two hits in two at bats.

Columbiana moves on to the Niles district semifinals on Monday to play Springfield. First pitch at Waddell Park is set for 4:30.

THERES A LOT OF TALENT IN DEARING

COLUMBIANA OH-  Senior leadership is a hard thing to find. Unless, of course, you are The Columbiana Clippers, where seniors are a dime a dozen this season. Although there is a generous amount of upperclassmen on this edition of The Clippers, each one of the senior leaders is completely unique in their style of leadership. Trevor Dearing is one of those guys you want to mold your mentality of the game after. Never getting too much in his head and his willingness to work with many different types of players, being a catcher and an outfielder.

Columbiana Head Coach Ryan Wolf has clearly had an impact on Dearing, seeing a lot of similar qualities in Trevor as that of a coach. Perhaps a future in impacting kids in the sport of baseball, might be in the cards down the line for Dearing.  The Clippers are on some kind of streak this season; however, the credit goes to the seniors, such as Trevor Dearing. By being able to, not only, keep the team on track in the roller coaster ride of a season that baseball brings, but also help maintain a field that has had two tsunamis worth of rain dropped on it this year.  These Clipper seniors have been in the front cart of this roller coaster, with Canal park at the peak, the climb has started.

CLANCY IS WRITING A NEW BOOK

COLUMBIANA OH- Do your job! A phrase so often heard in sports, but how often is it taken literally? For Columbiana Clippers senior Eddie Clancy, that is how he eats, sleeps, and breathes the game of baseball. Proof of that? How about being, statistically, the best Clipper defensive player this season!  His 19 assists are good enough for third on the ball club; however, he did it without a mistake. A fielding percentage of .1000, a feat no other Clipper with as many chances as Clancy was able to accomplish.

That is the footprint The Columbiana senior wants to leave with his fellow underclassmen after he graduates.  That mindset of being a good baseball player, teammate, and most importantly, friend.  Columbiana and Eddie Clancy look ahead to the tournament, where their season record has earned them the #3 seed a bye in The Sectional Semi-Finals.

Being already booked in one of The Sectional Finals on Wednesday, May 18th where they will await the winner of #14 Kirtland hosting #22 Jefferson just two days prior.  Catch Eddie Clancy and all The Clipper seniors for the last tournament run!
