UNITED SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH JEN KOONS

HANOVERTON OH- It’s time for another spring sports season! We know that it would t be complete without United softball.  This season the Eagles are looking to fly high in the EOAC under new head coach Jen Koons.  New is a loose term though, because Koons has been around the program for a while and is very familiar with what she has to work with.  They return a ton of speed on the base paths, and coach Koons promises they will try to cause chaos on the bases whenever possible. You can never sleep on the Eagles come softball season.

Coach Koons graciously took the time to chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to help us preview the upcoming season.  They talk about what stars are returning in their dugout, the schedule they’ve put together to test themselves, and much more. RICHMOND HEIGHTS STILL RUNS THE REGION

CANTON OH- In a display of dominance, Richmond Heights reaffirmed their status as the top contender in the region on Friday night, bringing an end to Warren JFK’s season with a convincing 95-61 victory. The Spartans wasted no time asserting their authority, seizing control early to establish a commanding 30-11 lead after the first quarter.

Although Warren JFK managed to rally in the second quarter, narrowing the gap and igniting hopes for a comeback, Richmond Heights refused to relent, maintaining their composure and intensity throughout the second half.

Leading the charge for Warren JFK was Nick Ryan, who poured in an impressive 22 points, showcasing his offensive prowess in a valiant effort. Michael Condoleon contributed 16 points of his own, while Nico Ciminero added 6 points to the scoreboard.

JFK KEEPS MOVING FORWARD

CANTON OH- Warren JFK continued their impressive tournament journey with a dominant performance on Tuesday, securing a wire-to-wire victory over Dalton in the regional semifinals. With a commanding 75-55 win, JFK showcased their strength and skill on the court, led by standout performances from Michael Condoleon, Nick Ryan, and Jaden Rishel.

From the opening tip-off, Warren JFK set the tone for the game, asserting control and never looking back. Condoleon led the offensive charge with a stellar display, pouring in 24 points and showcasing his scoring prowess. Not far behind, Ryan added 23 points of his own, while Rishel contributed 14 points to round out JFK’s balanced scoring attack.

With their sights set on the regional final, Warren JFK now prepares to face off against Richmond Heights at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday. Riding the momentum of their impressive victory over Dalton, JFK enters the matchup with confidence and determination, eager to continue their quest for championship glory. Tip-off for the regional final is scheduled for 7:00 PM, and Warren JFK fans are sure to pack the stands in support of their team.

AN EAGLE IN GERMANY

SUHL GER-  In the heart of Hubbard, Ohio, a volleyball prodigy emerged, setting the courts ablaze with her talent. Adria Powell, a former Hubbard Eagle, transitioned seamlessly from high school sensation to collegiate star, and now, she’s making waves in the professional volleyball scene in Europe.

Powell’s journey began amidst the fervor of high school volleyball, where she quickly garnered attention with college offers before even stepping onto the high school floor. Throughout her three seasons at Hubbard, Powell showcased her prowess, tallying an impressive 1172 kills and 211 blocks. Her dominance on the court earned her recognition as the OHSVCA Player of the Year during her junior season, solidifying her status as a rising star.

With her sights set on Ohio State University, Powell made her verbal commitment during her junior year, eager to embark on her collegiate journey as a Buckeye. Opting to graduate early, Powell seized the opportunity to join Ohio State ahead of schedule, kicking off her collegiate career with a bang. In her freshman season, she notched over 100 kills, laying the groundwork for a stellar collegiate tenure.

Throughout her time at Ohio State, Powell not only excelled on the court but also in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors from 2019 to 2022. Her dedication and drive propelled her through each season, culminating in a standout senior year where she played a pivotal role in leading the Buckeyes to the Elite Eight. Setting career highs in blocks, points, and kills, Powell left an indelible mark on the program, cementing her legacy as one of Ohio State’s finest.

After completing her collegiate career, Powell embarked on a new chapter as a grad-transfer at Clemson University, seeking to further hone her skills and pursue her dream of playing professionally. Under the guidance of head coach Jackie Simpson-Kirr, Powell flourished at Clemson, preparing herself for the rigors of the professional volleyball circuit.

The opportunity to play professionally in Germany beckoned, and Powell seized it without hesitation. Joining VFB Suhl LOTTO in Suhl, Germany, Powell embraced the challenge of adapting to a new culture and style of play. With determination and resilience reminiscent of her days as an Eagle in Hubbard, Powell continues to thrive on the court, poised to make her mark on the international stage.

As she navigates the intricacies of professional volleyball in Europe, Powell remains steadfast in her commitment to growth and excellence. Her journey from Hubbard to Ohio State to the professional leagues stands as a testament to her unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of success. With each serve, spike, and block, Adria Powell proves that she is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the court.

JFK GETS ANOTHER DISTRICT MEDAL

ORWELL OH- In a commanding display of their dominance, top-seeded Warren JFK raced to a district championship on Friday night with an impressive 76-39 victory over Heartland Christian. The Eagles left no doubt about their status as the top team in the district, showcasing their talent and determination on both ends of the court.

Leading the charge for Warren JFK were Michael Condoleon and Nick Ryan, who each poured in 20 points to fuel the team’s offensive explosion. Nico Ciminero also made significant contributions with 13 points, highlighting the Eagles’ balanced scoring attack.

Despite a valiant effort from Heartland Christian, led by Collin Kalaher’s 12 points and Will Morgan’s 10 points, they couldn’t withstand the relentless onslaught from Warren JFK.

With this decisive win, Warren JFK advances to the regional semifinals, where they are set to face off against Dalton. The upcoming matchup, scheduled for Tuesday at 8:00 in the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse, promises to be another thrilling contest as Warren JFK continues their quest for postseason success.

 

WRESTLING WEDNESDAYS WITH GARY ALTHISER (EP 13) FEATURING DALLAS MCCRACKEN

It’s finally here! A whole season worth of wrestlers fighting and grinding has led to one weekend in Columbus.  As YSN prepares for more coverage of the state tournament than ever before, we must ask what to expect on the mats? Good thing we have a couple of wrestling gurus who can answer all questions.  YSN has 44 wrestlers competing at state, and our very own Gary Althiser, and Chris Colucci are on the ball with all the info you’ll need in this state preview episode of Wrestling Wednesdays with Gary Althiser.

This episode’s special guest is one of those 44 wrestlers getting ready for the biggest stage this sport has to offer in high school.  Dallas McCracken has brought the limelight to United wrestling with consistent success.  As he hears up for his final time as a United Eagle he reflects on his career, and what got him here with the boys on Running Point.

EAGLES CUT THROUGH TO THE FINALS

ORWELL OH- Warren JFK continued their relentless pursuit of a state tournament berth with a commanding performance on Monday, cruising past Hillsdale with an emphatic 81-49 victory. Displaying their offensive prowess and defensive tenacity, the Eagles left no doubt about their determination to advance further in the postseason.

Leading the charge for Warren JFK were standout performances from Nick Ryan, who poured in 22 points, and Nico Ciminero and Michael Condoleon, who each contributed 16 points to the scoreboard. With a balanced scoring attack and contributions from players like Jaden Rishel, who added 9 points, the Eagles proved to be a formidable force on the court.

BRUNGARD’S BIG GAME PULLS SPRINGFIELD TO THREE-PEAT

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a quest for a historic three-peat, Springfield entered this year’s district tournament with determination and a hunger for victory. Despite facing formidable opponents, the Tigers showcased their resilience and championship pedigree throughout the tournament.

Their journey to the district crown was fraught with challenges, as they narrowly escaped Badger with a thrilling buzzer-beater victory. However, their true test came in the championship game against Warren JFK, where they engaged in a tense battle until the final buzzer.

In yet another nail-biter, Springfield managed to edge past Warren JFK with a narrow 52-49 victory, securing their third consecutive district championship. Led by the outstanding performance of Jameka Brungard, who poured in an impressive 33 points, and Marianna Tuscano contributing 12 points, the Tigers displayed their offensive prowess when it mattered most.

Despite Warren JFK’s valiant effort, with notable performances from Didi Ryan (21 points), Gianna Pompelia (11 points), and Ava Darney (10 points), they couldn’t withstand Springfield’s relentless pressure down the stretch.

With this hard-fought victory, Springfield advances to the Regional Semifinals, where they will face off against Richmond Heights at Massillon Perry on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 8:00, as the Tigers continue their pursuit of further postseason success.

EAGLES OFFENSIVELY OVERWHELM CORNERSTONE

MINERAL RIDGE OH- In a thrilling showdown, Warren JFK refused to let their season slip away, rallying past Cornerstone Christian with a final score of 53-42.

Led by the dynamic duo of Gianna Pompelia and Didi Ryan, who combined for an impressive 46 points, JFK’s offense proved too potent for their opponents to handle. Pompelia showcased her scoring prowess with 25 points, while Ryan contributed 21 points of her own, guiding JFK to a crucial victory.

With this win, JFK secures a spot in the district championship game, set to take place on Saturday. The stage is set for an electrifying showdown against Springfield at Mineral Ridge, where both teams will battle it out for the coveted title. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00.

FORTUNA’S MILESTONE PROPELS BROOKFIELD TO ADVANCE

HANOVERTON OH- In an electrifying start to their tournament journey, Brookfield surged to victory in the first round, securing a convincing 52-38 win over United. With an impressive display of skill and determination, Brookfield showcased their resilience and tenacity on the court, earning themselves another opportunity to compete.

Leading the charge for Brookfield was Matteo Fortuna, whose outstanding performance not only propelled his team to victory but also marked a significant milestone as he surpassed 1000 career points. Fortuna’s remarkable effort included a game-high 20 points, underlining his importance to the team’s success. Shaun Dungee contributed 11 points, while Judah DeJoy added 10 points, providing crucial support to fortify Brookfield’s offensive arsenal.

Despite a valiant effort from United, led by Luke Courtney with 11 points, Brookfield’s balanced attack and stout defense proved too much to overcome.

With the win, Brookfield advances to the sectional final on Friday, where they face a challenging road matchup against Mooney.
