RAIDERS STUNG BY HORNETS

NILES, OH- Saturday night the Raider football team headed to a familiar stadium in Bo Rein in Niles. Unfortunately, they also got the same result as the last time they were there. The Raiders lost to the top-ranked Kirtland Hornets 38-7 in the second round of the OHSAA playoffs.

The Raiders got the opening kickoff but were unable to do anything with it. Kirtland defense was smothering all night, and their offense stung the Raiders. The Hornets took their first 2 possessions in for touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead early in the game. The Raiders were able to muster up a drive and score on a four-yard QB sneak by Michael Patrone. That cut the lead to 14-7 but that’s as close as the Raiders would get.

Kirtland would use their two power backs, Luke Garner and Mason Sullivan. The formation was a familiar one to the Raiders. The Poland bulldogs ran the same offense and the Raiders had trouble with it than as well.

The Raiders finished with a season-low 129 total yards, 97 yards rushing. Micheal Patrone finished 5-14 for 32 yards. Dylan Dominguez was the leading rusher with 44 yards. Chris Brooks had 24 yards on 2 receptions.

For the Hornets, they had 386 total yards 342 coming on the rush. Luke Gardner led the Hornets adding 191 to his 1100 yards for the season. Mason Sullivan stacked up another 157 to his 1400 yards for the year.

The Raiders finish 8-4. The Hornets 12-0 move on to the Regional Championship vs Akron Manchester.

POLAND POWERS PAST INDIAN CREEK

SALEM, OH – Poland Bulldogs came into tonight’s game facing an Indian Creek team who has never been to week 12 in the Ohio High School Playoffs. The Bulldogs would prove too much for Indian Creek with a balanced attack on offense and a strong defensive line giving Indian Creek headaches all night. Poland Running Back Josh Alessi scored 3 rushing touchdowns while Quarterback Jack Fulton would contribute 2 passing touchdowns. The stubborn Bulldog defense held Indian Creek scoreless all night long and would increase their scoreless quarter streak in the playoffs to 8 quarters. Poland beats Indian Creek 35-0.

Alessi got the Bulldogs the lead early in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0. Alessi would add another touchdown towards the end of the first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown to add to the Bulldog lead. In the second quarter, the passing game would come alive for the Bulldogs when Fulton passed to Wide Receiver Andrew Centofanti from 37 yards away to increase Poland’s lead to 21. Towards the end of the quarter, Alessi would add a 3rd rushing touchdown with a 5-yard touchdown run gave the Bulldogs the commanding 28-0 lead against Indian Creek.

The third-quarter highlight was all Poland defense who were able to hold Indian Creek offense from scoring all game and have not allowed a point to be scored in both playoff games this season. The Bulldogs would seal their victory with a play-action touchdown pass from Fulton to Tight End Michael Voitus from 22 yards away to make the final score 35-0 in favor of the Poland Bulldogs. Poland will face the number 1 seed Perry Pirates next week in the Regional Finals of Division 4 at a location to be named. The Bulldogs have not been to the Regional Finals since 2009. Head to YSNLIVE.com on Sunday to find out the location of the game.

THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR THE EAGLES FALL TO THE REDSKINS

RAVENNA, OH – In a week that was highly focused on the last two years, the Eagles were unable to execute against the region’s top team, the Cuyahoga Heights Redskins, 33-14, on the “Smurf turf.”

Cuyahoga Heights struck first on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Sam Shafer to Kyle Polack late in the first quarter. The Redskins struck again early in the second quarter on a 2 yard run by Shafer, making the score 13-0. Warren JFK didn’t wait long to get themselves on the board, as Jesse Likens took a handoff and dashed 60 yards to the endzone, cutting the Redskins’ lead to 13-7. Cuyahoga Heights then took their next offensive play 73 yards on a pass completion from Shafer to Jason Bartosik. The Eagles proceeded to create their own drive as they marched down the field and cut the lead to 20-14, on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Christian Marantis to Savone Williamson. Cuyahoga Heights punched it in one last time in the first half on a 1 yard run by Shafer, making the score at the end of the first half, 26-14 in favor of the Redskins.

The second half was uneventful in terms of scoring except for a 55 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Polack to Jason Bartosik on a fake punt early in the third quarter. That pushed the score to 33-14, where it stayed until the end of the game.

Warren JFK was led through the air by Christian Marantis with 6 completions on 18 attempts for 74 yards and 1 touchdowns. The Eagles were led on the ground by Jesse Likens with 30 carries for 221 yards and 1 touchdown. Warren JFK’s top receivers were Savone Williamson with 2 reception for 34 yards and 1 touchdown, Gabe Green with 2 reception for 25 yards, and Cameron Hollobaugh with 2 reception for 15 yards. The Eagles were on defense by Giovanni Coletti with 8.5 tackles and Jesse Likens with 5 tackles.

With the loss tonight, the Warren JFK Eagles closed out their 2019 football season with a final record of 8-4.

TO MAURO’S FORECAST; THUNDER AND ICE

WARREN, OH- He’s one of the many features of the future for Coach Bayuk and the Eagles, and he’s earned a starting spot in the high-octane offense that is Warren JFK.

When senior Christian Marantis was out with an injury, Coach Bayuk gave a QB by Committee look to the opponents with one being Cam Hollobaugh, and the other being a sophomore standout, Mike “The Iceman” Mauro.

Mauro like many on the roster is a variable that the coaching staff can count on to fill in at several different positions and stay confident that wherever he’s placed, he’ll be an impact player.  Mauro is a nightmare for the opposition both on and off the field.  The Iceman gives coaches fits with his ability to be all over the field and Hemi-like motor that never stops.  Meanwhile, defenders are left laying in wonder when Mauro totes the rock- an up-back with a thunder-like momentum that makes defenses quiver.  Literally, there was a play this year that Mauro practically ran through his jersey and has since forced the semi-retirement of his home “16” uniform in the place of his injured teammate’s number 22 (which is a cool story in its own right.)

We were able to do what many can’t, and that is contain Mauro for a few minutes.  For this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile we give you: TO MAURO’S FORECAST; THUNDER AND ICE.

GOTTA LOVE LIKENS

WARREN, OH- With the Eagles rolling into Week 12, Warren JFK Faithful is gearing up for a rematch of the last two years- and neither has gone the way of the #BluePride.  However, this year is different.

Almost…destined.

Sitting in the backfield is a brand new Ferrari for the Eagle offense to ride in 2019, and that sweet ride is in the form of Junior, Jesse Likens.  Likens is known for his speed on the field, and his team-first attitude off

With an injury to his friend and teammate, Jordan Edmundson, the Eager Eagle flew into action and never looked back.  Racking up frequent flyer miles into the opponent’s endzone, including a trifecta in Week 11 against Independence.

We had the chance to catch up with Lightning Likens before the Cuyahoga Heights game in this week’s Warren JFK Player Profile: GOTTA LOVE LIKENS

SOUTH RANGE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 12) WITH DAN YEAGLEY

Week 11, the first week of the 2019 OHSAA football playoffs, saw Coach Dan Yeagley and the South Range Raiders offense start off slower than we have seen all year, as they trailed Bellaire 7-2 going into the half. The second half, however, was a completely different story as the Raiders rattled off 28 unanswered points in route to a 30-7 victory. Week 12 or Round Two, however you might be keeping track at home, will send South Range on the road to take on the #1 seed, the Kirtland Hornets, in Niles at Bo Rein Stadium on Saturday night.

The pride of YSN, D.J. Yokley, sat down with Coach Yeagley this past week to talk about the big first-round win, what his outlook is moving into their second-round match up with perennial powerhouse Kirtland, and also what the Raiders need to accomplish to move on to Round 3.

Episode Twelve of South Range Raiders football coach’s corner with head coach, Dan Yeagley is LIVE!

BERNIE; THE BROWN FROM YOUNGSTOWN

By Scott Mincher

The high school playoffs are in full swing, The college season’s getting interesting and the playoff picture is taking shape in the pros. Depending on how you view life, It’s either fun or agonizing to be a football fan during November. It can be less gut-wrenching through, for a person or people to still be a fan of the game while rooting exclusively for players. This brings us to our first 2019 player profile. It brings me great delight to write about a guy that’s a legend with Boardman high school and with the Cleveland Browns, You probably guessed it, That man is Bernie Kosar. Depending on who you ask. He’ll go down as a local football favorite as well as a great pro quarterback who is the definition of veneration in Youngstown and Cleveland. Or one of the many really good quarterbacks who weren’t great or elite because he lost three AFC championship games to Hall Of Famer John Elway. Because of my age what I respect Bernie most for is his football mind and his ability to see a play and know what’s gonna happen before the play unfolds, So from my perspective, it’s all relative. One thing I think all fans that know anything about Bernie’s playing days agree he was a very smart and accurate quarterback. As a senior at Boardman high school, he earned Parade magazine All-American honors for the 1981 season. During his career at Boardman, his teams were 6-0 (during a strike-shortened season) and 8-2 his senior year, when he threw for 2,022 yards and 19 touchdowns and was named Ohio Player of the Year. In his junior year, the fall of 1980, Kosar claimed the starting quarterback job, despite the coaching staff’s trepidation about his throwing motion — a critique that would stay with him for years. “He doesn’t throw the ball, he lets go of it like a guy losing a bar of soap in the shower,” legendary sports columnist Jim Murray once wrote. “The first look you get at Kosar’s delivery you think it’s a gag. “I’ve seen bridal bouquets thrown with more velocity.” His mobility was another issue or lack thereof. Kosar’s cumbersome gait, his sidesaddle way of standing at the line to get his feet out of the way of his center at the snap, his arm slot, throwing motion, release point — it was all a hot mess. But inside that package was some special stuff, too — something virtually every coach at every level had to learn for himself Kosar had an elite football IQ and was frequently able to decipher a defense quicker than his coaches. He was also a pinpoint passer and had the toughness and moxie to move an offense against a superior foe. His penchant for delivering in the clutch would become another key trait, to the point he was described as a pressure junkie. “The ultimate way of how a quarterback is judged is on the end results. How I look is of no consequence to me,” Kosar said. “Sometimes I throw underhanded, side-armed, off the wrong foot, all the good stuff. But I’ve been doing that my whole life.”

The Boardman staff learned not to tamper with success and watched Bernie guide their squad to a 6-0 record. The season was sidetracked only by a teacher’s strike in the district that cost the Spartans a conference title and a playoff spot. But Bernie showed enough that coach Gene Pushic scrapped the program’s power-oriented attack to take advantage of their budding star’s arm talent. In 1981, Boardman finished 8-2 and just missed the playoffs. Kosar earned first-team All-Ohio recognition and was the state’s Division I offensive player of the year. He longed to attend Ohio State, but Earle Bruce couldn’t get past those mechanical flaws. Instead, Howard Schnellenberger was convinced of Kosar’s talent and wooed him to Miami, Fla. But before that, while he was still at Boardman, He was a basketball starter as a sophomore and eventually became Boardman’s leading scorer and rebounder. An excellent third baseman and pitcher in baseball, his father and one of his coaches figured that was his best sport. But Bernie’s passion was football. And, despite his unorthodox style, it was his future, too. You can find this and more on Bernie’s high school career as well as other stories about him on richlandsource.com As far as his college career goes, Bernie had a magical clutch performance against the Nebraska CornHuskers. He passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns, all while ending Nebraska’s 22 game winning streak and leading Miami to their first National Championship and winning 1983 Orange Bowl MVP honors, Arguably his greatest accomplishment at Miami. In 1984, he set Hurricane season records with 3,642 yards and 25 touchdowns, was a second-team All-American and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. Kosar’s career completion percentage of 62.3 percent is still a Hurricanes record. In 1985 underclassmen had until April 15 to notify the league about their eligibility for the April 30 regular draft. In January 1985, a Florida television report stated that Kosar had decided to forgo his two years of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft. Kosar denied the report at the time but added that he would keep his options open. At a March 15 news conference, Kosar announced that he would make himself available for the 1985 NFL Draft and that he would like to play for the Cleveland Browns in his native Ohio. After the announcement, both NFL and United States Football League teams were interested and Kosar’s agent, John Geletka, even met with the USFL’s commissioner, Harry Usher to confirm the USFL’s interest level.

After a prolonged NFL draft controversy. On June 25, 1985, Kosar became officially eligible for the supplemental draft when he took his exam finals and the university notified the NFL front office that he had graduated. On July 3, 1985, the Browns selected Kosar and signed him to a five-year contract.

Some of his biggest career highlights with the Browns are when he had his most productive year statistically in 1987. During that strike-shortened season, he completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,033 yards and 22 touchdowns and led the AFC in quarterback rating. He’d also go on to set a record for consecutive playoff games with at least three touchdown passes (3 games) having thrown three scores against both Indianapolis and Denver in 1987, and three against Buffalo in 1989. Some other career accolades include setting an NFL record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 286. In 1990 and 1991, Kosar set a league record by throwing 308 consecutive passes without an interception, which stood for almost two decades. Being a two time Pro Bowler in 1987 and 1989, and helping the Cowboys get to Super Bowl XXVIII by filling in for Troy Aikman and passing for a touchdown in a victory. He would end up taking the last snap in Super Bowl XXVIII getting a ring as the Cowboys backup quarterback. For as many great accomplishments that Kosar achieved in his career, Our team at YSN was able to find a quote from Bernie stating that he had only one regret. “My goal was to win a Super Bowl for Cleveland,” Kosar said. “It’s why I wanted to play here in the first place. It’s home.” (Quote via richlandsource.com)

It’s quotes like that that make Bernie Kosar an idol in Youngstown and Cleveland even to this day. and even more, the reason why I like to think of him as Bernie The Wonderful Brown from Youngstown!!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER; EAGLES FLY TO ROUND 2

INDEPENDENCE, OH- The Warren J.F.K. Eagles are advancing to the second round of the OHSAA Division VII playoffs. J.F.K. took down the number four seed Independence 41-7, under the lights at Alumni Field, in Independence on Saturday.

Kennedy was lead by Junior running back Jesse Likens, who was untouchable on the turf, collecting three touchdowns throughout the night.  Wide Receiver, Cameron Hollobaugh was very active for the Eagles offense, as he caught a touchdown, as well as ran for a touchdown to seal the playoff victory for the Eagles.

J.F.K. will now take on playoff rival, Cuyahoga Heights this Saturday at 7 P.M. The game will take place at Ravenna High School. Our very own John Bolino will have the call for the second-round matchup, here on YSN.

ROUND 2 GOES TO BIG BLUE; POLAND MOVES ON

POLAND, OH – Poland and Struthers had the rare opportunity to play each other in back to back weeks thanks to both teams making the playoffs. Week 11 would yield the same results as week 10 with Poland beating their rival through the run game. The Bulldog defense was able to hold the Wildcat scoreless for the first time this season. Quarterback Jack Fulton had 3 total touchdowns (1 rush, 2 passes) in the winning effort.

After 7 consecutive run plays by the Bulldogs, Fulton passed to Tight End Jake Kountz from 12 yards to the endzone to take the early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs would increase their lead after Fulton rushed into the endzone from 1 yard out to make the game, 14-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. After an interception from Defensive Back Andrew Centofanti, Fulton completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Centofanti in the final minute of halftime giving the Bulldogs a commanding 21-0 lead.

Kicker Mikey Kushner would continue the Bulldogs’ success with a 34 field goal in the third quarter. Kushner would also help out on the offensive end with a 9-yard touchdown run to make the final score 31-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. Poland will play Indian Creek at a neutral location in week 12 of the high school football season.
