SIEFKE DOUBLES DOWN ON ALL-STATE SELECTIONS

LISBON, OH- It wasn’t long ago that Lisbon senior Trevor Siefke earned 1st Team All-State in football and Academic All-Ohio by  The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA), and now he has done it again with state honors in basketball. Siefke has earned All-State basketball honors for three consecutive years. He has also been named Academic All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA). Siefke is only the second student in Lisbon’s history to receive state basketball honors for three consecutive years.

Coach Chris Huckshold has been Siefke’s longtime coach and remarks, “Trevor’s level of play on the court and dedication to his academics make him a great leader on our team on and off the court. There is no better deserving nominee for this award,” He continues, “I’ve seen Trevor grow as a kid and as a player. I’ve coached him since he was in 4th grade and so he is more than just a basketball player, he is a good person and a well-rounded individual going out into the world. I am proud of him.”

The All-State recognition and Academic All-Ohio awards are based on Siefke’s accomplishments on the court and in the classroom. The qualifications for Academic All-Ohio nominees are arduous requiring a 3.6 GPA or higher and  All-State recognition to be considered. DAHS High School Principal, Keith Edenfield, explains, “To receive one of these awards is commendable, but to receive All-State honors and Academic All-Ohio honors in multiple sports is truly incredible. DAHS is proud to have Trevor represent Lisbon at a state level in both football and basketball.  Trevor is the epitome of a student-athlete.”

For his part, Siefke says, “It’s an honor to be part of Lisbon’s history. There is no other school that I would rather be a part of and make history for.” He credits his dad (Lisbon Schools Superintendent Joe Siefke) and his teammates for his success saying, “My Dad has always played a big part in motivating me to take the next step. My teammates  have helped me throughout all four years and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Siefke’s historic basketball career includes All-State honors for three consecutive years including Honorable  Mention All-State for his sophomore and junior years and Special Mention All-State for this year.

THE BENEFITS AND CONSEQUENCES OF YEAR-ROUND 7 ON 7 FOOTBALL

EAST PALESTINE, OH- With the recent decision by the OHSAA to adopt year-round 7-on-7 football, we’ve seen many points and counterpoints being tossed all over the internet and social media.  We wanted to put some points out there ourselves and weigh in on both sides to help open further conversation on the topic.

In recent years, the concept of year-round 7-on-7 football has gained traction, challenging the traditional off-season structure of the sport. While proponents argue that extended play offers numerous benefits, including skill development and increased competition, there are also potential consequences to consider, particularly in relation to participation in other sports.

Benefits:

1. Skill Development: Year-round 7-on-7 football provides athletes with ample opportunities to hone their skills, from passing and catching to route-running and defensive coverage. The increased frequency of play allows players to refine their techniques and improve their overall performance on the field.

2. Increased Competition: By participating in 7-on-7 tournaments year-round, players are exposed to a higher level of competition compared to traditional offseason programs. Facing off against skilled opponents from across the state fosters a competitive environment that pushes athletes to elevate their game.

3. Team Bonding: Extended play allows teams to develop stronger bonds and cohesion, both on and off the field. The additional time spent together fosters camaraderie among teammates, leading to improved communication and teamwork during games.

4. College Exposure: Year-round 7-on-7 football provides high school athletes with opportunities to showcase their talents to college scouts and recruiters. Tournaments often attract attention from college programs, offering players valuable exposure and potential scholarship opportunities.

Consequences:

1. Overuse Injuries: The year-round nature of 7-on-7 football increases the risk of overuse injuries, such as tendonitis, stress fractures, and muscle strains. Without sufficient rest periods, athletes may experience burnout and physical fatigue, compromising their health and performance.

2. Sport Specialization: The rise of year-round 7-on-7 football may contribute to sport specialization among young athletes, potentially limiting their participation in other sports. As athletes dedicate more time to football throughout the year, they may miss out on the diverse experiences and skill development offered by participating in multiple sports.

3. Burnout: The constant demand of year-round 7-on-7 football can lead to burnout among athletes, both physically and mentally. The pressure to perform at a high level year-round may take a toll on players’ enthusiasm and passion for the sport, resulting in decreased motivation and enjoyment.

4. Impact on Other Sports: Year-round 7-on-7 football may have implications for participation in other sports, particularly those with overlapping seasons. Athletes who commit to football year-round may be unable to participate in sports such as basketball, baseball, or track and field, limiting their opportunities for cross-training and overall athletic development.

In conclusion, while year-round 7-on-7 football offers several benefits in terms of skill development, competition, and college exposure, it also comes with potential consequences, including increased risk of injuries, sport specialization, burnout, and impact on participation in other sports. It is essential for athletes, coaches, and parents to carefully consider the implications of extended play and prioritize the overall health and well-being of young athletes.
