BOARDMAN OH- The calendar keeps on turning as we get closer and closer to the spring sports season.  Last season Boardman softball was one timely hit away from locking in a district championship. Eight seniors had to say goodbye to the program, and now you’ll see a lot of new faces take the field on Glenwood Avenue.  However, the Spartans are returning their best arm from a season ago in Tori Strines, her battery mate Maddie Wymer, and they are getting Natalie Davis back from injury.  Don’t sleep on the Spartans this year in the AAC.

Head coach Fred Mootz returns for another season at the helm of the softball program. He took the chance to sit and talk with Anthony Hartwig to preview the season ahead. They talk about the roster, the tough league they play in, and so much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Fred Mootz only on YSN.

FRED MOOTZ; FROM COACH TO REFEREE

BOARDMAN OH- Many of sports fans in the area know Fred Mootz as the head coach of the Boardman Spartans softball team. But in his offseason he takes off his coach’s hat and puts on his referee one. From the youth level all the way to varsity, Mootz puts in a ton of time trying his best to better the game by policing the rules.

As Mootz gets ready for another go around as a football referee in the fall, he came on YSN’s Running Point to give us a little insight into the life of a referee. Officials are in the limelight right now more than ever with north east Ohio officials wanting to demand higher pay. As these conversations continue there’s no one better than someone who knows first hand the demands, responsibilities, and rewards of being an official. Don’t miss this exclusive interview with Fred Mootz only on YSN.

BOARDMAN SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH FRED MOOTZ

BOARDMAN OH- Last season, Canfield was a big thorn in Boardman’s side. They swept the Spartans and kept them out of the AAC race. Something that hurt even worse when Boardman split the series with Fitch last season. This time around with Canfield, Boardman got the win in the first matchup of the season. The win over the Cardinals was a big turning point for the Spartans. They were coming off a tough weekend sweep at the hands of West Branch.

The second matchup with Canfield will have to wait as the Spartans, and most of the other teams in the area navigate the weather of northeast Ohio. The Spartans next scheduled game is a double header with Aurora on Saturday at home.

Fred Mootz discussed the big win, and some of the great starts his players have had with Anthony Hartwig and Scotty Mincher on YSN’s Running Point. Hear from the head man himself in Episode 2 of Coach’s Corner with Fred Mootz.

BOARDMAN SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH FRED MOOTZ

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman softball is fastly approaching. Softball fans can smell the season in the air. For the Spartans, the reasons to be optimistic are plentiful. The roster that Boardman is going to put on the table is loaded with tons of experience. It starts in the circle with senior Maddie Lester. She led the Spartans pitching last season, and there is no reason she won’t do it again. She also brings a mighty bat to the field. Jenna Olexa returns, and brings her power with her. Dana Haus will no doubt be featured at the top of that lineup and be a handful to keep off the bases.

Head coach Fred Mootz took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about his entire team. He talks with Anthony Hartwig, and Ty Bartell about the experience on the roster, goals his team is going to set, and much more. Check out Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner With Fred Mootz.

HEADED HOME: BOARDMAN LADY SPARTANS SOFTBALL PREVIEW

BOARDMAN, OH – YSN recently had the opportunity to sit down and speak to head coach Fred Mootz of the Boardman Lady Spartans. The Lady Spartans have three seniors and two of them are already committed to play at the next level. Coach Mootz also has four juniors who lettered as freshman, and of course like the rest of Ohio spring sports they missed out on last season due to COVID. Coach reminded us that he knows he has high expectations as this year is the 20th anniversary of 2001 Boardman Lady Spartans state championship team, that being said, he understands its always one game at a time. Defense and pitching will lead the way for Boardman and they expect their bats will heat up as the weather does, right in time for the state tournament.

BOARDMAN SOFTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EPISODE 1 WITH FRED MOOTZ)

BOARDMAN OH- Boardman Softball is in the middle of an upswing. Coming off a 19 win season a year ago, bright skies were ahead for a fairly young Spartans team. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has halted the 2020 season. Still the spirits are high in Boardman as head coach Fred Mootz preaches that no matter when they get back on the field, they need to be ready. Boardman finds themselves with just one senior on the roster. That might seem like an easy rebuild from the outside, but when that senior caught every game for the Spartans a year ago, replacing that leadership will be tough.

Anthony Hartwig charged with Coach Mootz this week in a video conference call. They discuss the youth of the team, the tough schedule they were ready to play this season, and much more. Stay updated on Spartans softball with Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Fred Mootz.
