CRESTVIEW LADY REBELS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 1) WITH AARON BLATCH

Coach Aaron Blatch and the Crestview Lady Rebels are off to a strong start in the 2019-2020 high school basketball season, currently sitting at 3-1. The Lady Rebs are coming off their first loss of the season to the Liberty Leopards, but Coach Blatch knows that an early loss in the season can be a solid teaching moment to build the chemistry and ultimately lead to success later on in the season.

The Lady Rebels will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, December 14th, as they will hit the road and travel up to Champion to take on the Golden Flashes. Crestview will then return home on Wednesday, December 18th, as the Lady Rebs will welcome the Brookfield Warriors to town.

YSN’s own, D.J. Yokley, had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Coach Blatch to preview the matchup against Champion but also to discuss the team this year and see what his outlook is on the 2019-2020 basketball season.

MOONEY WINS INSTANT CLASSIC AGAINST RIVAL URSULINE

You can find dozens of metaphors and definitions for makes a great rivalry. In the end, these games just mean more. And when it means more, the best often comes out of the coaches, and especially the players.

Mooney and Ursuline have decades of tradition between them, hard fought victories and intense competition. Those things, along with the toughness only a rivalry like this one can bring, were on full display tonight as the Lady Cardinals played host to the Fighting Irish.

The action started fast, with both teams exchanging 3 pointers to start. But the trademark for Mooney has always been their defense, and it quickly locked in on the Irish and held them to just 10 points in the first quarter. The Cardinals led by 5. However, the second quarter was not nearly as lopsided. In the quarter, Mooney scored 8 to Ursuline’s 7, led mostly by junior Katie Hough. Hough flirted with a double double for most of the game, and was exceptional from the free throw line, 7 of 9. Drama hit at the very end of the quarter however, as Gia Diorio for Mooney and Paris Gilmore for Ursuline both left the court with injuries. The two had been matched up on one another for the majority of the night.

Both Paris and Gia sat for most of the third quarter, but two more players would need medical attention. Alaina Scavina dealt with a lower leg injury, as did Rachel Fabry for the Irish. Ursuline, down two starters, would go on a run to cut the deficit to 3, but Maria Fire, a freshman thrust into action, played a huge role in Mooney retaking and maintaining a 5 point lead into the fourth. Fire had 6 points off the bench and 2 huge blocks.

Paris and Gia returned to the court, in what might be the most perfect and moving image to symbolize the Holy War rivalry. Paris, visibly limping and in pain, being guarded by Diorio, who had a severely taped left wrist which she couldn’t even dribble with, was truly a sight to behold. Scavina and Fabry also returned, making it four girls total fighting through the pain. That’s just how much it means.

The game, however, was simply taken over by Katie Hough. Her prolific free throw shooting and phenomenal defense were just too much for the Irish. Hough would finish with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Not to be outdone, senior Catie Perry had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals, her hustle and on ball defense coming up huge down the stretch. But the same could be said for every girl who stepped foot on the court this game. The Irish and Cardinals laid it all on the court in the name of this rivalry. And despite the fact one team had to lose, everyone knows when it comes to Mooney and Ursuline, it’s never truly over.

This chapter of the Holy War goes too Mooney, a final score of 43-31.

BY THE BROOKE

Poland Lady Bulldog Senior Brooke Bobbey has had quite the wave of attention in the last couple weeks. She has signed to play softball at St Bonaventure, she has continued to excel in the classroom, and she now leads a basketball team poised to build off of a 26-1 season.

It’s only fitting that the girl who is number one in her class would wear the number one on her jersey. Time management has been a skill that Bobbey has all but mastered, lettering in all 3 sports she plays while maintaining her 4.0 GPA.  Brooke seems to find herself near the top of everything she ventures in to. But if you ask her, it’s not about being at the top for her, it’s simply about doing everything she does to the best of her ability. That’s how she was raised. She is now a senior leader, and captain to a team that was a couple steps away from punching a ticket to Columbus last season. She looks to lead her team not just in games, but also in practice making sure the intensity level stays up throughout the season. Brooke has set a personal goal to improve her offensive output while keeping focused on her shutdown defense. Coach Blanch says early in the year he can already see a difference in her game. She is shooting lights out right now heading into the start of the season. Everyone in the program is surely hoping that continues.

Anthony Hartwig caught up with Brooke to talk about this basketball season. They also discuss changes to the team, her support system, and much more. Get your fix of Lady Bulldog basketball with the latest Player Profile By The Brooke.

THE OBP MACHINE

What makes a great multi-sport athlete is their ability to transition from season to season effortlessly. Their desire and toughness pushing them through each season, directly into the next.

Catie Perry takes the court this season as only one of four seniors, but for her, the season never ends. Nicknamed during softball season as “The OBP Machine”, due to her incredible on base percentage, Perry has little time to think about her previous accomplishments as she’s setting new ones each and every day.

Nate Keiper caught up with Catie earlier in the week, prior to the Lady Cardinals game against rival Boardman, to see what the current goals for her and her team might be, as well as discuss favorite Christmas gifts. This week’s player profile has been a much anticipated one, with Catie Perry, The OBP Machine!

SOUTH RANGE GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2 WITH JEFF FISHEL)

The Lady Raiders got their first win under Coach Fishel over the weekend vs Shaw. He thinks playing in a tournament style setting to open the season will be huge for his team going forward. The Raiders are looking ahead to the start of league play as the go up against Lakeview, and Poland in the coming week.

Anthony Hartwig traveled to South Range to chat with coach Fishel this week. They discuss the team’s opening weekend, the week to come, and much more. Stay up to date on the Lady Raiders with Episode 2 of Coach’s Corner with Jeff Fishel.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3 WITH NICK BLANCH)

The Poland Lady Bulldogs are coming off their first win of the season Monday night at Champion. The word coach Blanch used to describe the win was “heart.” It definitely took a lot of heart to beat a scrappy Champion team that kept coming back at the Bulldogs. They had to make plays late, and that’s where their experience kicked in. Now they look ahead to two tough league games vs Struthers and South Range.

Anthony Hartwig went down to Poland to check in with Coach Blanch. They discuss the win over Champion, the week to come, and much more. Grab a snack and enjoy Episode 3 of Coach’s Corner with Nick Blanch.

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?

The Poland girls basketball program is living on air at the moment. Coming off of a 26-1 regional finalist season, the hopes are high for the Lady Bulldogs. They return 4 out of 5 starters from last year, but lost great senior leadership. One of the players trying to fill that role is senior forward Kailyn Brown.

Coming off a season where she led the team in rebounds, Brown is ready to put in the work to succeed in her senior season. She knows that now it’s up to her and her fellow seniors to lead this team to victory. She says she learned a lot from watching how the seniors led last season. A an already strong work ethic has been made stronger by the finality of a senior season for Kailyn. She is aware that everything she does means a little bit more this season. The coaching staff sees chances to use her as a guard in some situations which will make her a massive asset. But don’t worry Bulldog fans Kailyn still plans to get in there and fight for rebounds as well. The energy on the court Kailyn says her best leadership quality is the ability to get her teammates excited in big moments. She certainly hopes for a lot of exciting opportunities this season as she’ll do anything to get her Bulldogs to the next step.

TO INFINITY AND BREE-YOND

An athlete’s choice in shoes can tell you a lot about them. As far as South Range Junior Bree Kohler goes, she wants her shoes to be bold and spunky. This year Bree is going with Buzz Lightyear kicks, which makes sense because her potential goes to infinity and beyond.

Bree is no stranger to being a key role on the Raider team. She has been a starter since freshman season, and has already made her impact on the program being a leader in games on the court. Now, a junior Bree realizes she has to also be a leader in practice and off the court as well. She takes pride in her growth in leadership. She says that the biggest thing she’s grown in is confidence in what she is saying. Bree has always been a player who thrives when she’s loose. But now Bree has learned to pick and choose when to be loose and goofy, and when to be locked in and serious. Her biggest personal goal this year is being more of a threat on offense. Always a threat on defense, Bree looks to widen her game as she steps into the shoes of an upperclassmen.

Anthony Hartwig had the chance to have a conversation with Bree this week. They discussed her leadership, what impact she wants to make on people around her, and much more. So take a seat and get comfy for the latest Lady Raider Player Profile To Infinity and Bree-yond.

THE LONE SENIOR

Emily Irons is no stranger to being a leader of a team. She spent all of volleyball season as not only a senior leader, but as a setter which is the leader of the offense. Now as she transitions into basketball season she will stand as the lone senior.

By no means is Emily the only player asked to display leadership on the team. However, there is something different about senior leadership and that’s where she stands alone. There could not be someone more prepared to take the role of the lone senior. Emily has spent years being an emotional leader of every team she’s been on. Now she says she’s coming into this season with a new mindset and is ready to get her team where they need to go. Irons treasures the opportunity to help start off a new coaching regime to a positive start and jump start the program for years to come. She thinks the fact that coach Fishel is a born and raised Raider makes him the perfect person for the job, and she’s going to give him everything she’s got in her last go around as the lone senior.

Anthony Hartwig got the opportunity to talk with Emily after a scrimmage vs Champion. They talk about being the only senior on the team, a new mindset for the new season, and much more. Learn even more about Emily Irons with the First Lady Raider Player Profile The Lone Senior.

POLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP2 WITH NICK BLANCH)

We are now just days away from opening night for the Poland Lady Bulldogs. As the season inches closer the focus becomes more on their first opponent, a strong Champion team. The coaching staff is aware that outside expectations are high coming off a 26-1 season. They try their best to block out the noise and stay focused. Nick Blanch knows they lost more than outward appearances would seem. Although they return four starters, the seniors that graduated a year ago are “the best I’ve ever coached” says Blanch. The Bulldogs are hoping that the new leaders of the team will be able to take the lessons learned from a season ago and apply them now.

Anthony Hartwig got a chance to talk to coach Blanch this week. They discuss the opening night matchup, coach introduces his coaching staff, and much more. Get your fix of Lady Bulldogs basketball with Episode 2 of Coach’s Corner with Nick Blanch.
