BIG TIGER RUN PROPELS THEM TO FINALS

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- It was a very intriguing matchup in Tuesday’s district semifinal between Springfield and Champion. The Flashes record on paper might not measure up to Springfield, but when you break down the way they started the season, to how they finished it is easy to tell they were playing a great brand of basketball. After trailing at halftime 22-20, the Tigers used a huge 11-0 run to win the second half 34-19 on route to a 54-41 victory.

The Tigers were led by both Alex Rothwell, and Beau Brungard who finished with 14 each. Adam Wharry added 13 points to contribute to the Tiger offense.

Austin Wilforth played admirably for the Flashes scoring a game high 19 points to lead Champion.

Springfield hosts the winner of South Range vs Pymatuning Valley.  That game got moved to Wednesday to off set South Range’s girls team playing in the regional semifinals on Tuesday. The district final at Springfield will be Friday at 7:00.

FLASHES EDGE CRESTVIEW IN OVERTIME

COLUMBIANA OH- It was Down to the wire on Friday night in a MVAC matchup between Crestview and Champion. The Flashes trailed by 11 with just over 1:30 to go in the fourth quarter but climbed all the way back to tie it, and eventually win it in overtime. Trailing by one with seconds ticking away Trayvon Edwards put back a missed shot at the buzzer to give Champion the thrilling win.

The win for Champion makes them 10-6 (6-4). They are 9-1 after starting the season 1-5. The Rebels fall to 8-13 (6-6).

Champion sets their sights on tournament play as they host Rootstown on Tuesday night. The Rebels have another tournament tune up Saturday as they go to Heartland Christian.

GUMONT GIVES IT ONE LAST GO

WARREN OH- The Champion girls sports programs have a high standard of winning. From soccer, to basketball, to softball the Golden Flashes expect tow win a lot of games, and to be in the discussion come tournament time. This year is no different, the Champion girls basketball program has been voted the four seed in the tournament and looks to repeat as district champions and get back to regionals. Leading the way this season is senior Emma Gumont.

Emma had a strong junior season in 2019-2020, she put in her 1000th point as a junior, which is not something you see too often. She also had a 30+ point performance in last season’s district championship against Garfield. So what goals could she possible have for this season after completing so much already? Well she wants to focus more on her teammates this season. Coming in to the year Emma knew there would be a lot of new faces on the floor this season for Champion. She has done her best to encourage the new comers to be the best they can be. Now as they approach the end of the season, Champion seems to have finally gotten in sync after a late start due to Trumbull count shutting down during the month of December. Things are looking bright for the Flashes and senior Emma Gumont is going to give it everything she has to extend her last go around the basketball court.

Emma is signed on to play softball at the next level with Notre Dame College. She says softball is always on the mind, and everyone is excited to finally get a spring high school season. The area certainly knows what her and her softball team at Champion are capable of.

Emma was kind enough to take the time to talk with Anthony Hartwig about her senior campaign and her career at Champion. They discuss what fuels the winning culture at Champion, the community support, and much more. CHAMPION STAYS IN THE HUNT

LIBERTY OH- After dropping a tough game to Newton Falls on Monday, Champion needed a win Wednesday night to keep pace with Brookfield in the Wild MVAC. Champion came in with two losses in the conference, same as the Warriors. The Flashes came out hot hitting five threes in the first quarter jumping out to a 25-8 lead. They would have to fight back a couple Liberty runs throughout the night, but in the end they would win 54-41.

Emma Gumont led the way for Champion scoring 14 points for the Flashes. Isabella Meyer wasn’t too far behind her putting in 12 points. Ava Howell was also in double figures with 11 points.

Liberty was paced by Aaliyah Foster who had a game-high 17 points. Demi Watson has a strong night with 11 points.

 

CHAMPION CHARGES OUT OF HALF TO BEAT REBELS

On a Saturday afternoon game, the Crestview Lady Rebels led the Champion Lady Golden Flashes 23-20 at the half.  However, the 15 points the Lady Golden Flashes put up in the third quarter was too much for the Lady Rebels to over come as the Golden Flashes defeat the Lady Rebels 43-38.
Champion’s Junior Ava Howell hit 6 of the points in the third quarter to add to her 16 points on the afternoon. While Senior Brooke Whitt scored 7.
Crestview’s Senior Mara Halas and Junior Trinity Miller both scored 8 points in the Lady Rebels loss.
Both teams return to action on Monday evening.  The Lady Rebels (11-8) will head to Liberty while the Lady Golden Flashes (7-3) will face off against Newton Falls in the Falls.

FLASHES CONTINUE THEIR CLIMB SURPASSING LIBERTY

WARREN OH- Champion has had a tremendous week bouncing back from adversity. Seeing a losing streak reach five last week with a heartbreaking loss to Crestview, the team seemed to be at their lowest. A week later, the Flashes have now gotten their record back to .500 with a 68-61 win over Liberty.

Austin Willforth and Trayvon Edwards both had impressive showings for the Flashes as they both led the team with 20 points.

James Davis led the Leopards with 20 points, while Jameer Weaver also cracked double figures scoring 16.

Champion returns to action Friday as they host Brookfield. Liberty stays in the league on Tuesday as they host Campbell.

CHAMPION PULLS AWAY FROM LEOPARDS

WARREN OH- The host Champion Flashes held a slim 2 point advantage at the half but pulled away in the final two periods

The Flashes Brooke Whitt had a huge night dropping in 23 points followed up by Emma Gumont with 16 points and Linda Dodrill hit 5 3-pointers to score 15 points to pull away from the Liberty Leopards 67-55 in Thursday’s action.

Cianna Smith paced the Leopards with 16 points and Aaliyah Foster added 14 points.

GRISDALE BECOMES PROGRAMS SCORING LEADER IN POLAND WIN

POLAND OH- Jackie Grisdale came in to Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Champion needing 12 points to become the Lady Bulldogs all time leading scorer. It was also Poland’s last non conference game slated on the season. Grisdale and the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, beating the Golden Flashes.

Grisdale got her spot at the top of Poland’s scoring list early in the second quarter with a three from the corner. It gave her 14 points on the day, and 1,306 in her career. It officially broke the record set by Bella Gajdos during Jackie’s freshman season in 2018.

Grisdale led Poland with a total of 17 points on the night.  Morgan Kluchar added 7, while Katie McDonald scores 6. Eleven Poland players got in the stat sheet on the night.

Emma Gumant scores 9 points to lead the Flashes. Ava Howell also scores 7.

Poland will get back to league play Monday as they travel to Hubbard.

CRESTVIEW COMPLETES SWEEP OF MVAC

WARREN OH- Crestview completed their season sweep of the MVAC with a dominating straight set victory over Champion (25-3 25-5 25-2). Crestview finishes the conference schedule with a 12-0 record.

Lucy Montgomery led the offense with 16 kills, 6 assists, and 4 digs. Grace Auer has 22 assists, 6 aces, and 5 kills. Molly Emch had 8 kills and 2 blocks on the night. Kendra Greaves led the defense with 12 digs,

Crestview moves on to host East Canton in the first round of the OHSAA tournament. The Rebels are the 1 seed in the Northeast 2 Bracket.

CHAMPION STRIKES DOWN REBELS

WARREN OH- Austin Willforth’s 2 yard touchdown run late in the 3rd Quarter gave the Champion Golden Flashes a 20-17 upset win over Crestview on a rainy night in Champion.
Champion had the ball for all but one play in the third quarter, as they wore down the Rebels defense.
Joe Fell paced the Champion offense with ten carries for sixty-nine yards and two touchdowns.
William Hardenbrook scored two times for the Rebels, a 48 yard touchdown pass from Anthony Cusick In the 1st quarter and a 9 yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

The Rebels(0-1) will face Campbell Memorial at home next week. The Flashes(1-0) will travel to Ravenna next week to face Southeast. Catch both games on YSN
