CAFFEY SHATTERS RECORDS AS HUBBARD STARTS SEASON STRONG

HUBBARD, Ohio –
Coming into his senior campaign, TC Caffey is viewed as not only one of the top rushers in the Mahoning Valley, but one of the best running backs in the history of Hubbard Football.
Kicking off the season with an otherworldly performance, TC’s 33 carries for 456 yards and 5 TDs with a long run of 93 gives the senior captain the school rushing record for single game rushing yards, along with the longest touchdown in Hubbard history.
An obvious testament to how hard of a worker Caffey is, he would be the first one to tell you that none of it was possible without his offensive line. The Eagles offensive front consistently made holes big enough for their standout back to drive a semi-truck through.
Hubbard’s new look Wing-T offense is one that came with some doubts, but any critics were quickly hushed (myself included) in the Eagles 48-28 routing of the Division 6 Region 21 runner ups from last season, the Norwayne Bobcats.
Although they had no answer to stop the Eagles’ run game, Norwayne and Elijah Stanley managed to put together a good showing on the offensive side of the ball. Stanley threw for 201 yards and 2 TDs, while managing to muster 77 yards on the ground and another TD with his legs.
BIG PERFORMERS
HUBBARD:
TC Caffey: 33 carries, 456 yards (single game school record), 5 TDs, long rush of 93 yards (single game school record)
Yianni Hazimihalis: 4 carries, 83 yards, 1 TD
NORWAYNE:
Elijah Stanley: 201 passing yards, 77 rushing yards, 3 total TDs
UP NEXT
Hubbard: For the second week in a row, the Hubbard Eagles (1-0) will host a powerhouse program in a division lower than them. The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals (0-1) will head into Hubbard Memorial Stadium with an all-time record of 12-0 against the Eagles. Catch the action at 7:00 pm next Friday night on YSNLive.com.
Norwayne: After being walloped by TC Caffey and Co., the Norwayne Bobcats (0-1) will hit the road again in week 2 to take on the Canton Central Catholic Crusaders (1-0).

STREETSBORO UNLEASHES ONSLAUGHT ON INDIANS

GIRARD OH- Thursday night, we saw a high school football game like any other going into the 60s in scoring. Well, how about we repeat that but have a team go into the 70. That is exactly what we saw once again at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday when the Girard Indians who were ranked 66th in the DIV preseason poll took on the Streetsboro Rockets who were ranked in the top 10 in DIII preseason poll.

The first half was back and forth and the two powered offenses traded points. Girard opened their first scoring drive as Triston Valley threw a lob 8-yard pass to star wide receiver Dominic Malito making it seven to nothing. However, Streetsboro blasted off on their first drive led by star players in Lafayette commit Hunter Hopperton and Maysun Klimak. Klimak ended their drive with a two yard touchdown tying it at seven.

Later on in the second quarter just before halftime after a controversial call where coach Pat Pearson and the Indians thought that the clock hit zero after a halfback toss which led the Rockets all the way down to the Girard 10 yard line. The refs said that there was still one second left and the Rockets used that to their advantage as Klimak found Hunter Hopperton for a 10-yard touchdown tying it all at 28 going into the half.

Second half
However, what seemed like a big time shootout, became a one sided game fast. After a turnover on downs and a fumble by the Indians, there was no going back as the Rockets went to another Hopperton brother in Preston Hopperton where he scored two big touchdowns which were a 45-yard touchdown and a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter. However even though the Rockets were now up by 21, Streetsboro would suffer a big loss in star quarterback and defensive back Maysun Klimak who limped off the field.

In the fourth quarter, the Rockets brought in quarterback Colby Benjamin who got his first touchdown pass of the evening off of an 80-yard touchdown to Preston Hopperton, making the final score 70-35.

Stats
First downs: Streetsboro 23
Girard: 22

Maysun Klimak: two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown (left game in second half).

Colby Benjamin: 3-3 for 123 yards
Triston Valley: 13-23 for 160 yards two passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown.

Chad McCrae: 13 rushing attempts for 134 yards. Hunter Hopperton 18 carries for 108 yards and three touchdowns.

Up Next
Girard faces an old familiar rival as they will face the Liberty Leopards in the Battle of Belmonts return. Liberty (1-0) under new coach Joe Simon got their first win against Western Reserve 30-12. This is the first time the teams have met each other since 2018 where the Indians under Mark Waid beat the Leopards 42-12.

For Streetsboro, they host the West Geauga Wolverines (0-1) next Friday, who are coming off of a 24-17 loss to Bay.

LEOPARDS RETURN THE ROAR IN WEEK 1

LIBERTY OH- The motto of the Liberty football team all summer has been “Return The Roar”. In Week 1 against Western Reserve they did just that with a dominating 30-12 win over the Blue Devils. The opening day win was the programs first since 2012.

D.C Ferrell and Derek DeMattia both shared snaps under center for the Leopards who threw for a combined 161 yards. Ferrell threw for 116 while DeMartia threw for 45. Chris Cunningham was the main target through the air catching 7 balls for 155 yards. Donte Venters led the ground game, carrying the ball for 130 yards.

David Altiere ran the ball well for Reserve. On 16 carries he gained 176 yards. Luke Henning completed a total of 7 passes for 96 yards.

Liberty will welcome in Girard on Friday while Western Reserve will go to JFK.

JFK DOESN’T MISS A BEAT

CHAMPION, OH – The Warren JFK Eagles came into Friday night’s game attempting to match the ferocity of last season’s reign. Many wondered how they would adapt to new kids stepping up on the turf to take the place of superstars like Hollobaugh and Likens from last year’s past team. Well with the likes of Brown, Mauro, and Rivera, I don’t believe they’ll need to worry too much. Champion put up a great fight all game, however the blue storm’s defense was simply too powerful. The Eagles took the game 48-6, and scored 27 points in the first half.

Antwan Brown of the Eagles had three rushing touchdowns, along with one kickoff return touchdown after Champion’s only score of the day. Brown was the lead rusher for the team, and made quite the debut for the team. Midway through the game, he suffered an ankle injury that seemed like he would be out for the majority of the game. He proceeded to come back on the field for the kickoff from Champion, where he clutched the ball from the air and took it about 75 yards to the house. After the touchdown, he seemed to tweet it once again, and that is where he called it quits for the rest of the game. Michael Mauro of the Eagles and Abram Rivera had scores of their own, Rivera scoring a 2 point conversion after a Brown rush in the end zone. Mauro in the first half picked off QB Joey Fell, which led to a Brown TD. On the other side of the ball, the Golden Flashes’ Mason Sabo was the only one with points on the board for the day. Champion tried their hardest to swing momentum back into the game, but it was too little too late.

Champion will be playing Rootstown next Friday, August 27, and Warren JFK will be home playing Western Reserve that same day.

VALLEY SOARS TO SEASON OPENING VICTORY

CAMPBELL, OH – In a ‘Battle of the Fields’ at John Knapick Field in Campbell, the Valley Christian Eagles took advantage of Campbell Memorial miscues en route to a 36-6 victory on Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter which included Campbell getting two turnovers on their first two drives, Valley Christian got on the board first as Campbell’s special teams botched a punt and Cam Davenport was there to scoop it up for the touchdown, with the two-point conversion to make it 8-0. The Red Devils, led by senior quarterback and Chaney transfer Kayvon Moore, had a promising drive down the field, but it ended when Moore threw an interception to Tyree Washington to end the half.

The Eagles would then explode in the third quarter as DeSean Lindsey bursted off for a 55-yard touchdown run, making the score 16-0 with the two-point conversion. After a long 52-yard touchdown pass from Joey Batista to make the score 22-0, Campbell was able to make one of their few highlights of the night. Kayvon Moore took the kickoff and broke through lanes on his way to a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown as it was 22-6 with the failed two-point conversion. Valley Chrisitan then scored 13 more points to end the contest.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-0 to start off the year as they will stay here at John Knapick next Friday night to take on a LaBrae team coming off a 40-0 over Lakeview. Eagles coach Andy Hake improves to 104-25 overall as a head coach. The Red Devils drop to 0-1 as Coach King will be looking for his first career victory next week on the road at Lowellville. The Rockets are coming off a 50-27 win over Columbiana.

YSN’s Noah Ricks talked with winning coach Andy Hake following tonight’s contest. Watch below for the post-game interview.

BROOKFIELD BARRELS THROUGH BLUE DEVILS

MCDONALD OH- The Mcdonald Blue Devils opened up their season at home with horrifying loss to the Brookfield Warriors. The Warriors offense was led by quarterback, Donovan Pawlowski as well as wide receivers Dave Pawlowski, Isaiah Jones, and TJ Laverty, and running back Teandre Craig. The Mcdonald defense was no match at all for this Brookfield offense as they proceded to score thirty-five points against them. Mcdonald was also no match for the Brookfield defense as star quarterback, Logan Hawk, and star running back Nathan Gilligan were no match for the likes of defensive ends Ryan Tetrick, Lucas Beckstine, and Codi Hoover and as well as linebacker Colin Murphy. Mcdonald looks to bounce back from this 35-6 defeat next week against Columbiana. Meanwhile, the Brookfield Warriors look to mirror this games dominant performance next week against Springfield.

RAMS STIFLED BY PYMATUNING VALLEY

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Pymatuning Runs All Over Ridge

Mineral Ridge and Pymatuning Valley both opened their seasons Friday looking to each get their first win of the new year. Senior QB for the Rams, Mark Bunch, knew he would have to be at his best to get the win over a heavily talented Py Valley roster.
Ridge took an early lead late in the 1st quarter when Bunch connected with Mason Miller for a 30 yard passing touchdown. Mineral Ridge struggled after that, however, and would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The story of the night was the big 6’3”, 235 lb QB for the Lakers, Robert Verba. The Lakers used his size and agility, followed by the O-line’s size to plan out a perfect ground attack all night long.
Mineral Ridge had no answers all night long for the senior QB who led his Py Valley Lakers to get their first win of the season (1-0) Mineral Ridge falls to (0-1) early in the season

FALCONS DEFENSE SHUTS OUT CHANEY

AUSTINTOWN OH-
The Fitch Falcons showcased a high-powered defense, in renewal of the west side rivalry Friday night. The X-factor of The Falcons defense? Sophomore free safety DeShawn Vaughn Jr., who ended the day with 3 interceptions. Chaney had a productive day on the ground, with JR Telligton and Jace Austin-Amill leading the way!
On the offensive side of the ball, DJ Williams added a touchdown on the ground. Devin Sherwood also found the endzone with a touchdown pass on the day, a part of The Falcons 27-0 victory over The Cowboys.
The Falcons look to go on the road next Friday to face a tough Canton McKinley team. While Chaney looks to refocus against another AAC opponent in the Boardman Spartans for week 2.
