RAIDERS PUT AN END TO SPRINGFIELD’S STREAK

NEW MIDDLETOWN OH- Friday night had so much excitement brewing. It was week 1 of high school in Ohio, fans could be in full attendance, and in New Middletown the Raiders and Tigers were ready to due battle!

This week one matchup had been in the making for two years. Last year both teams played an abbreviated schedule and had to nix their matchup. And both teams went on to have great seasons. But now fans got to see the battle between these two backyard rivals. The Raiders got to start the night with the ball. They had a long drive all the way inside the 10 yard line but a fumble ended the scoring opportunity. The Tigers took over but we’re unable to turn in into points. The next Raider drive was again another long drive with runs and some passes mixed in. It was capped off by a Billy Skripac run. The Raiders would add to their lead when Dylan Dominguez marched in for another touchdown.

Springfield would answer when Bo Brungard connected to Seandelle Gardner for a 72 yard touchdown pass. But the Tigers were never able to catchup to the Raiders. South Range was able to extend their lead through out the evening. For the Tigers Bo lead the way passing 9-13 with 177 yards and rushing 11 times for 64 yards. Gardner was the leading receiver with 95 yards and the 1 touchdown.

For South Range it was a balanced attack. Skripac had 301 yards of total offense. He threw for 209 yards with 2 tds and ran for 92 with a td. Dominguez had 199 yards rushing with 3 tds. Leading receiver was Ayden Leon with 104 yards and a td. The loss ended a 20 plus regular season game winning streak for Springfield.

The Tigers look to start another streak next week when the my travel to Brookfield. The Raiders have their home opener next week for Hall of Fame week vs University.

MINERVA NO MATCH FOR EAGLES

HANOVERTON OH- United flexed their muscles on Friday night against Minerva as they stormed the Lions with a 41-7 pounding.

United’s defense absolutely set the tone early in their matchup with Minerva. They forced 4 turnovers in the first half. Including a huge play by Caden Marshall grabbing a pick six. Grant Knight shined in his debut under center. He was electrifying leading the Eagles offense. He also chipped in on defense causing one of the four turnovers. This win is United’s message to the area, they are still going to be tough to beat.

The Eagles hit the road next week heading to East Canton. Kickoff set for 7:00.

WARRIORS WASTE NO TIME BEATING EAST LIVERPOOL

EAST LIVERPOOL OH- It was all West Branch on Friday night as the Warriors went on the road to pound East Liverpool 47-6.

It was the Warriors defense that set up their offense for scores in the game. West Branch forced 4 turnovers in the first half. Three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Those turnovers led to three touchdowns. The Warriors got into the endzone five times in that half.

Dru DeShields had a great debut under center going 14-21 in the air in the first half for 137 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball eight times for 46 yards. Steven Marra scored three separate times for the Warriors, twice on the ground, and one catching the ball. He finished the game with 127 yards on 16 carries. DeShields finished with 157 total passing yards. He ran it in the endzone twice and threw it in once.

RAIDERS SPLIT SEASON OPENING TRI MATCH

RAVENA OH- South Range opened the season on Saturday morning as part of a tri-match with West Branch and Southeast. The Raiders cruised to a win over Southeast, but was swept by West Branch.

In the first game against the Pirates the Raiders win in 2 set. (25-7 25-15). Maria Primavera led the Raiders offense finishing with 6 kills. She also got herself 3 digs. Jamie Ferren set up 10 assists. Ally Sauerwein contributed 5 kills.

In game 2, South Range dropped the match to West Branch in straight (sets 18-25 22-25). Maria Primavera, and Hannah Heikkinen both led the offense. Reagan Irons played well in the back row as she collected 8 digs.

South Range will have their home opener on Monday as they host Boardman.

SPARTANS OFFENSE MAKES THE RIGHT ADJUSTMENTS

BOARDMAN OH- It started out as a defensive battle in Boardman on Friday between the Spartans and Cardinal Mooney. Neither team found a score for the majority of the first half. Boardman ran away with it in the second half winning 28-7.

Sean O’Ohoro put Boardman on the board in the 2nd quarter with a monster 32 yard run finding pay dirt. O’Horo wasn’t done either, he would find the endzone again in the third quarter. Anthony Hightower also punched his way to a touchdown in the third frame.

Davonte Miller was the sole Cardinal who found his way to a touchdown. The Boardman defense gave Mooney trouble all game long.

Boardman will look to keep the wheels turning as they host Chaney next week. Things don’t get easier for Mooney, they’ll have to bounce back next week traveling to Hubbard.
