HUBBARD FALLS IN TWO TOUGH GAMES

WOODBURY, Tennessee

After dropping a pair of games to begin their trip to the Volunteer State, the Hubbard Eagles (15) traveled to Cannon County High School to take part in another doubleheader.

HUBBARD VS CENTRAL MAGNET

In a matchup that was supposed to take place yesterday prior to the revising of the schedule, the Eagles faced off against the Central Magnet Tigers (6-4). Central Magnet has made 5 appearances in the state tournament over the last 8 years andhold 3 regional championships in that same time frame.

Trailing by 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and closing in on the time limit, the Eagles needed to rally to keep the game alive. Hubbard would quickly tie the game up thanks to a RBI Double off the bat of Hayden Fox, and a RBI single via Joe Langley. Unfortunately for the Dirty Birds, theiroffense would stop there, leaving pinch runner,Ryan Murray, stranded on second.

With the time limit surpassed and the two teams still tied, the game moved into extra innings, MLB shootout style. Central Magnet scored 3 in the top half of the inning and the Eagles were unable to respond, dropping their third game in a row, 8-5.

HUBBARD VS GRUNDY COUNTY

Trying to bring their losing streak to a halt, the Eagles turned their attention to the Grundy County Yellow Jackets (5-4). Hubbard snuck out a hard fought 3-1 victory when these two first matched up in 2018.

Starting off hot, the Eagles plated 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Back-to-back singles from Joe Langley and Andrew Kali would each plate run, as well as a booted ball by the Grundy County second basemen off the bat of Braeden Murray to plate 2 more.

The Yellow Jackets needed no time to respond, scoring 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to 2 errors courtesy of the Eagle’s infield. Grundy County would later score in the 4th inning to tie the game at 4, then plate 2 more in the 5th to take their first lead of the game.

Needing to produce at the plate once again to stay alive, Hubbard started the inning at the number 8 spot in the lineup. Following a groundout to start the inning, singles from Mikey Zapka and Andrew Frank gave the Eagles a runner in scoring positionwith one away.

Tristan Adamson would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Zapka to third and Frank to second. Grundy County would respond by walking the Eagle’s top returning hitter from 2019, Evan Jarvis. The intentional walk would bring Hayden Fox to the plate for the Eagles. With two strikes and the game on the line, Fox would line one into leftcenter field, scoring both Zapka and Frank to tie the game once again.

Once again, the Eagles had responded with their bats to bring themselves back into the game. However, it was another walk off win for the dugout opposite of the Eagles. Following two errors and a hit by pitch to load the bases, the Yellow Jackets’ Brandon Norris would poke one into the outfield, securing the victory, 7-6.

Dropping their 4th straight game in a row, the Eagles must now turn their attention to the Cubs of Madison, Indiana, with just one day left to play.

EAGLES DROP A PAIR IN TENNESSEE

EAGLEVILLE, Tennessee

Since 2017, the Hubbard Eagles Varsity Baseball program has made a habit of traveling south for some warm weather action. With a combined record of 5-5 from their first two years, the Eagles have faced teams from the home state of the Viking Classic, Tennessee, as well as clubs from Indiana, West Virginia, and even a fellow team from the Buckeye State.

HUBBARD VS EAGLEVILLE

Coming in with an all-time record of 2-3 against Tennessee teams, the Eagles kicked off their trip with a matchup against one of the host teams of the Viking Classic, the Eagleville Eagles (3-4).Apart of the 2019 Class A State playoffs, Eaglevilleput the ball into the hands of their senior pitcher and University of Tennessee commit, Logan Kimberlin.

Trailing early by a run, Hubbard senior Albert Gerlick continued his impressive start to the season, bringing in his 4th RBI on the year and tying things up at 1 apiece.

From there the Eagles would score two more runs on the game, including a base hit off of the bat of sophomore Jake Hettrick to bring in senior Tristan Adamson. Unfortunately, 3 runs wouldn’t be enough to earn the Eagles their second victory of the season. The Eagleville Eagles would pick up the victory due to the time limit, 4-3 in the 6th inning.

HUBBARD VS COMMUNITY

Trying to avoid dropping their second game in a row, Hubbard would take on a familiar foe in the Community Vikings (8-1). Over two years ago, Hubbard and Community faced off in the second leg of a double header for the Eagles, in which the first pitch didn’t come until after midnight.

Hubbard came out victorious in that midnight matchup, but they couldn’t replicate the same success tonight. Through the first two innings, the teams combined for 4 total runs and by the end of the game hit a final tally of 17. Needing to keep arms fresh for the rest of the weekend, Hubbard used 3 different pitchers in this matchup, all seeing their first action at the varsity level.Hubbard’s offense was not enough to overcome their inexperience on the mound, as the Eagle’s dropped their second game of the day due to time limit in the 6th inning, 7-10.

UP NEXT:

Finishing the day with a record of 02, Hubbard will head back to the hotel and rest up before another double header tomorrow. The Eagles will take on Grundy County (3-3) and Sequatchie County (4-5) at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively, at Cannon County High School.

FALCONS WALK IT OFF AGAINST HUBBARD

JEFFERSON, Ohio –

With 2 on and 2 out trailing 12-4 in the top of the 7th inning, the Hubbard Eagles seemed as if they needed a miracle to comeback. The inning started with a ground out, an infield single, a walk, and another ground out before bringing senior Andrew Frank to the plate.

Not looking to go home just yet, the Hubbard senior roped one into the outfield for extra bases, clearing the runners on to bring the score t0 12-6. After a hit by pitch and a walk, it was another Eagle senior at the dish with runners in scoring position, Hayden Fox.

Fox, a would be 4-year starter if not for COVID, delivered with a base clearing double of his own, 12-9. Starting to see the trend here? Up next senior Joe Langley punched one into the outfield to bring Fox home, 12-10.

Every great comeback always has a little bit of luck, and the Eagles got just that when freshman, Andrew Kali, reached on an error to keep the game alive then senior Albert Gerlick would bring in a run on an infield single, 12-11.

Hubbard was just one run away from coming all the way back from a 12-4 deficit with 2 outs and junior Josh Ruban was not planning on ending his teammates dreams. With possibly the most impressive hit of the inning, Ruban laced one down the right field line platting Kali, but Gerlickwould be thrown out at 3rd, ending the Hubbard half at a tie game, 12-12.

With momentum clearly swung into their hands, the Eagles needed to hold on in the bottom half to force extras. Unfortunately for the Eagles, their comeback didn’t have a cinderella ending.

Jefferson picked up a walk-off win in the 7thwithout recording a single hit. Starting with a strikeout, a walk, and a ground out moving the runner into scoring position, the Falcons had a runner on third with 2 outs.

What happened next, is a baseball nightmare. The Falcon batter hit a routine popup into the cold Jefferson sky. Staying in the infield, the pitcher drifted backwards over the mound trying to secure the third out and move things into extra innings, but the ball would drop, the run would score, and Jefferson would celebrate, picking up the victory 13-12.

VALLEY WINS BATTLE OF EAGLES

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –

For the second night in a row, Hubbard (5-11) was a part of a battle of the Eagles. On Wednesday, Hubbard played host to the Warren JFK Eagles in a game that saw them lose at home. Last night, Hubbard traveled to take on the Valley Christian Eagles (13-4).

In their previous game, Hubbard came out firing in the 1st quarter, putting up an impressive 25 points. Last night, however, was a completely different story. Only one shot would go in from the field for Hubbard in the first, while Valley Christian hit 3 three pointers and 4 shots from inside the arc, giving them a 17-4 lead at the end of the quarter.

Valley’s domination didn’t stop there, the Eagles were led by Sekou Stanley’s impressive 10-pointsecond quarter. While Hubbard saw more production in the second, totaling 9 points for the quarter, it was not nearly enough to keep pace with Valley Christian’s 21 points to head into the break.

Despite the first half struggles, the HubbardEagles kept fighting. Valley Christian outscored Hubbard by just 1 in the second half. If not for Hubbard coming out sluggish in the first half, the game could have been closer.

HOLLOBAUGH HAULS 1,000 IN EAGLES VICTORY

HUBBARD, Ohio –

With ties between these two schools both on the court and in the stands, last night’s battle of the Eagles did not disappoint.

Looking to defend their homecourt, Riley Heckert and the Hubbard Eagles (5-10) came out swinging. The first quarter saw 5 three pointers fall for Hubbard, 4 of them coming from Heckert. At the end of the first, Hubbard held the lead 25-15.

Warren JFK head coach, Mark Komlanc, a former coach at Hubbard, rallied his troops heading into the second quarter. JFK came out hot and closed Hubbard’s lead down to just 1 by the end of the 2ndquarter, leaving the score at 35-34 going into the break.

The true story line of this game once again came from a familiar JFK face. Cam Hollobaugh came into the night needing a 20-point outing to reach 1000 points for his career. After putting up 17 points in the first half, Hollobaugh was just 3 points away from reaching the mark and he knew it.

During shoot arounds prior to the second half beginning, Hollobaugh flashed three fingers into the crowd, showing that he knew exactly what was needed. But what makes this story all the moreimpressive, was his unselfishness on the way to 1000.

With an easy layup to start the half, Hollobaugh stood just 1 point away. After coming up with a steal, Hollobaugh was out on the break with a teammate and one Hubbard defender. Rather than take a contested layup, Cam tried to dish the ball off to his teammate. While the pass would notgo through, it shows the type of teammate Hollobaugh is, always wanting to win first.

Eventually, Hollobaugh would reach his 1000thpoint on a corner three. His scoring didn’t stop there however, as he would end up with a game high 30 points, leading his team to victory 78-68 over Hubbard.

LEADING SCORERS:

Warren JFK

Cam Hollobaugh 30 points

TJ Harden – 15 points

Gabe Green – 11 points

Hubbard

Riley Heckert – 25 points

Nik Hendrix – 13 points
