URSULINE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 7) WITH DAN REARDON

Coach Dan Reardon and the Ursuline Fighting Irish arguably played their most “complete” game of the season last week even though they came up just short in the final seconds against Bishop Watterson down in Columbus. Week eight will see Coach Reardon and the Fighting Irish welcome the Boardman Spartans to Stambaugh Stadium.

Everyone’s favorite, Steve Leslie, had the opportunity to catch up with Coach Reardon this week to get his thoughts about the game last week but also what he and his staff look to accomplish as the 2019 football season begins to wrap up.

Rebel senior, Tess Neville has been outstanding this year and paced the Rebels again with 11 kills, 9 points, 2 blocks, 3 digs, and an ace.  Shelby Rambo had 7 kills, 9 blocks while Brenna Auer had 7 kills and a block with an ace and 5 digs while leading the points category with 14.  Sid Rambo also posted 7 kills and a pair of blocks and digs respectively.  The Montgomery sisters combined to cause chaos for Ursuline- Lucy had 27 helpers, 3 aces and 14 points while Amelia had 11 digs.

For Ursuline, Mariah Cruz and Maris Barbato had 2 kills apiece, and Macy Ross had 3 digs.

The Lady Rebels now await the winner of Ursuline vs. United and will return to action on October 17th at 6pm.

GAME OF INCHES, IRISH COME UP JUST SHORT

COLUMBUS, OH- This was a game for the ages.

The Columbus Bishop Watterson Eagles defeated the Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish 35-34 at the Ohio Dominican University-Panther Stadium. The Eagles advance to 5-2, while Ursuline falls to 1-6.

The Eagles opening series resulted in a touchdown, thanks in large part to QB Jacob Hoying, son of former Ohio State QB, Bobby Hoying. The Eagles took the 7-0 lead, but two possessions later, Ursuline would respond. Junior QB Matthew Reardon found WR James Phillips for a 60+ yard gain. The next play, RB Trenton Hill punched the ball in to tie the game at 7.

Ursuline would take the lead on the next possession, as punter Jonah Fortkamp fumbled a high snap, which was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Ursuline. With a 14-7 lead, Reardon would dial-up Phillips again on the long ball and would extend the lead to 21-7.

The Eagles were not going to let Ursuline ruin homecoming night. Hoying would go to RB Tommy Bair to pound the ball downfield, and would eventually score to put the score at 21-14 at the half.

The 3rd quarter began, and the Eagles were ready to take the momentum back. Reardon would be intercepted in the opening drive, and the Eagles offense would punch it in to tie the game 21-21. The Eagles would then get the ball back, led by Bair, and would march down the field for the go-ahead score.

The Eagles would score again, pushing the game to a near out-of-reach 35-21. Ursuline would drive downfield, and Reardon would find WR Dean Boyd in the end zone to put the score at 35-28. The Eagles would control the clock, and Ursuline head coach Dan Reardon would burn all three timeouts.

The Eagles would face a 4th down with 45 seconds in the game, and Fortkamp came out to try a 35-yard kick. Ursuline, a team that had no intention of giving up, went after the kick and blocked it. Ursuline had 40 seconds to cover 70 yards. With 12 seconds to go, from their own 40, Reardon channeled his inner Patrick Mahomes and scrambled all across the backfield. Reardon heaved the ball downfield, and Boyd made a spectacular catch, and would score!

Coach Reardon was determined to win and went for two. Reardon handed the ball off to Phillips, Phillips looked to throw, but the pass was incomplete. For Ursuline, they should not hang their heads over this loss. They played harder than they ever have, and they left it all on the line. They will buckle down and prepare for a home game against the Boardman Spartans.

RIVALRY RENEWED, URSULINE TOUGHS OUT FIRST WIN OVER CHANEY

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- For Ursuline Coach Dan Reardon, it was a jubilant moment, and one that was months in the making as his Irish were able to lock in their first victory over cross-town rival, Chaney.  Ursuline posted a 27-26 nailbiting victory over the Cowboys in the Steel Valley Conference Matchup-the first for the Irish since the conference has reformed in 2019.

However, it wasn’t exactly picture perfect for the Irish.

Up 20-14 in the second half, Chaney breakout star Deron Gilbert Jr. went 60 yards on an impressive run after the catch to put the Cowboys up by 12.  Gilbert would finish with 7 receptions measuring out 146 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Just as impressive, Delshawn Petrosky went 16-28 with those same two scores.  It was the turnovers the Cowboys had that allowed the Irish to stay in the game.

Three interceptions and a costly fumble was the cost of doing business for Chaney.  The Irish’s Andrew Barkett was able to pounce on that fumble in the endzone putting Ursuline down just 5 points with just under ten minutes remaining.

Matt Reardon stepped up under center after Brady Shannon left with an injury- and led the Irish downfield where Trent Hill bowled his way in from 2 yards out into the endzone to give the Irish a 27-26 lead with just over five minutes left in the game.

Chaney tried as they might, but the Irish defense arrived late like a boa constrictor, suffocating the Cowboy offense- and forcing a pair of interceptions to seal their first victory of 2019.

Chaney will look to bounce back against University School next Saturday at 2 pm, while Ursuline packs the bus and heads to Columbus to take on Bishop Watterson this Friday.

URSULINE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 5) WITH DAN REARDON

Week five gave the Irish everything they could handle and then some, as they traveled up to Mollenkopf Stadium to battle the Raiders of Warren G. Harding. Unfortunately, Coach Dan Reardon and the Ursuline Fighting Irish just did not have “enough in the tank” as they fell to Harding. This week, the Irish welcome the Chaney Cowboys to town in a battle of Steel Valley Conference foes as it becomes the newest backyard battle in the Youngstown community.

YSN’s general manager, Steve Leslie, sat down with Coach Reardon to talk mid-season Ursuline Irish football, as well as, what the entire staff and team need to do to get a home win come friday night.

RAIDERS MAKE QUICK WORK OF IRISH

The South Range Volleyball team dominated Ursuline on Wednesday night with a three set sweep. (25-18 25-15 25-14)

The Raiders used consistent offensive efficiency to cruise their way to victory.  In each set they hit above .150. It all started with passing, the Raiders were in system a majority of the night, making it easy to get the ball to all their hitters. This is reflected in the balance of the Raiders attack. They had 4 players with 5 or more kills. Serving also helped the Raiders. The Irish struggled all night to get strong attacks over, being out of system off the serve receive. The Raiders had 10 aces as a team. This is a welcomed hitting performance for the Raiders after struggling to get into rhythm Tuesday night at Hubbard.

Leading the Raiders in kills was Anna Primavera with 15 kills, 4 digs, and an ace.  Abby George and Maria Primavera both had 8 kills. Primavera added 3 digs, and 2 aces. Emily Irons had 31 assists, 3 digs, and 2 kills. Reagan Irons finished with 11 digs.

The Raiders return to action Thursday as they travel to Jefferson.

HARDING THROWS BACK AND THROWS OFTEN, BEAT IRISH

WARREN, OH- Warren Harding throwback night brought back the Warren Panthers back from the past for one night only. The Panthers would play classic Panther defense forcing multiple turnovers against the Ursuline Irish. The Irish were held scoreless the whole night. The Warren Harding Panthers(Raiders) win throwback night 34-0.

Warren Harding started their scoring early in the first quarter with a Sack Fumble in the endzone that was recovered by Defensive End Jabari Felton to give the Panthers(Raiders) the early lead, 7-0. After another costly fumble by the Irish, Warren Harding Quarterback Marcus Brown would find Wide Receiver Brandon Arnold in the back of the endzone for a 5-yard touchdown reception to increase the lead to 14-0. In the second quarter, Warren Harding would add to their Panther(Raider) lead after Kicker Cavin Stouffer made a 21-yard field goal to make the game 17-0. Stouffer would add another field goal from 25 yards out to make the game 20-0 before halftime.
Third-quarter was all Warren Harding after a 46-yard touchdown catch from Wide Receiver Jamal Anderson made the game 27-0. Warren Harding would score once more to seal the victory after a 20-yard touchdown run by Running Back Elizah’ Smith gave the Panthers(Raiders) the victory 34-0. The Ursuline Irish(0-5) will play Chaney at Stambaugh Stadium next week. Warren Harding(3-2) will play Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s next week in Akron.

URSULINE FOOTBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP. 4) WITH DAN REARDON

Week four provided the Ursuline faithful with an exhilarating double overtime match up against the Golden Bears of East. Unfortunately, the Irish fell just short but Coach Dan Reardon has regrouped and now has his Irish hungry for a win in their week five match up, as they will travel to Mollenkopf Stadium to take on the Warren G. Harding Raiders.

YSN’s legend Steve Leslie was able to catch up with Coach Reardon and discuss what the Irish need to do to get the win.

GAME OF INCHES, URSULINE FALLS SHORT AGAINST EAST

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish traveled a few blocks down the street to Rayen Stadium to face the Youngstown East Golden Bears. The Golden Bears entered the contest looking to avenge their loss the week prior to the Niles McKinley Red Dragons. As for Ursuline, they were in search of their first win of the season.

Ursuline controlled the momentum in the first half, scoring the only 14 points of the half. The first touchdown came on third and long, as Daivon Jones made an 87-yard house call to put Ursuline up. The second score came off a perfect over-the-shoulder pass by Brady Shannon to Julian Johnson.

The second half was a Golden Bear affair. Eddie Bryant would go 56 yards to the end zone to put the Golden Bears on the board early in the third quarter. With several Ursuline miscues and missed opportunities, the Golden Bears found the end zone late in ten fourth to tie the game. Both teams took their shot at the win, but overtime was needed.

Both Ursuline and the Golden Bears would score in ten first overtime. The Golden Bears would punch the ball in yet again in double overtime. Ursuline took the field, and Shannon found Matthew Reardon in the end zone for a diving catch. Ursuline went for the win, and on a trick play, Reardon found James Phillips uncovered in the end zone; however, he was unable to keep himself inbounds.

Ursuline would fall 28-27 to the Golden Bears in a game for the ages. The Golden Bear faithful celebrated the hard-fought victory, while Ursuline’s followers were forced to wait another week.

Ursuline’s next test will take place at Mollenkopf Stadium in Warren, Ohio, as they face a longtime rival, the Warren G. Harding Raiders.
