RAIDERS RIDE INTO DISTRICT FINALS

STRUTHERS, OH- This was a matchup that was a long time coming.  These two teams faced off a week ago at the same location in Cene Park, and in a battle of who could show less about their roster, the Raiders proved victorious 3-1.  On Monday night with season’s on the line- South Range put their top arm on the bump, and everything came up aces for the Raiders.

South Range sophomore, Jake Gehring (NE8 Player of the Year) gave up a single run on seven hits and walked one while fanning 11 Irish during the teams 7-1 victory over Ursuline.

Leading the way on offense for the Raiders was sophomore All-NE8 second teamer, Brandon Mikos who punched in 3 RBI on the night on two hits.  Also contributing were Jared Bajerski with 2 RBI, and Ben Rivera and Gehring who produced a run apiece.

Joel Kreuzwieser took the loss for Ursuline. He surrendered two runs on four hits over three innings, striking out two.

Jeremy Kreuzwieser led Ursuline with two hits in four at-bats. Ursuline was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Jake Freisen had the most chances in the field with five.

The Raiders will now face Canton Central Catholic on Wednesday in the D3 District Finals, which will perhaps be the biggest game in the state of Ohio.  YSN will have you covered with tape-delayed coverage of the game from Cene Park.

POLAND STAYS AHEAD STAYS PERFECT WINS DISTRICT CROWN

Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, Poland still held off Ursuline for a 7-6 victory on Thursday and claiming the Division II Youngstown District Champiomship. Ursuline scored three runs in the failed comeback on a double by  Maris Barbato, a double by Destiny Goodnight, and a double by Gia Caldrone.

The Bulldogs pulled away for good with four runs in the second inning.  Brooke Bobbey drew a walk, scoring one run and Cami Lattanzio doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring three runs.

Ursuline scored three runs in the sixth inning.  The big inning  came thanks to doubles by Barbato, Goodnight, and Caldrone.

Ashley Wire led the Bulldogs to victory in the circle. She went seven innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and striking out five.

Emily Holland took the loss for Ursuline. She allowed four hits and three runs over three and a third innings, striking out one.

Lattanzio went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Poland in hits.  The Bulldogs were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Ally Nittoli made the most plays with  nine.

Ursuline tallied ten hits.  Caldrone, Goodnight, Barbato, Julia Nutter, and Alyssa Sheely all managed multiple hits for the Irish

Poland advances to play Mogadore in the regional semifinals at Akron Firestone Stadium on Wednesday at 5:00.

IRISH HOLD OFF WARRIORS RALLY ADVANCE TO THE TITLE GAME

The Ursuline Irish advanced to the Youngstown district championship on Tuesday night with a 9-7 win over West Branch

Ursuline jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with extra-base hits by Julia Nutter and Emily Holland.

West Branch answered back 5 runs in the top of the second largely in part to Riley Mesler, who finished 1-3 with 2 RBIs.

The score stayed at 5-3 until Ursuline got the offense going again in the 5th with 4 more runs, two more hit in by Holland. She finished 3-4 with 4 RBIs.

After the 6th, Ursuline was holding on to a 9-5 lead, but with two outs in the top of the 7th West Branch started to fight back. Grace Heath hit a two run homer to bring it within 2. Emily Holland was relieved by Emma Ericson for the final out when Peyton Alazaus flew out to first. Securing the 9-7 Irish victory.

Emily Holland led the way offensively for the Lady Irish with 3 hits and 4 RBI.  Maris Barbato also had three hits in the victory.

Ursuline advances to play Poland in the Youngstown District Championship game on Thursday night at 4:00 at YSU Softball Complex.

DESTINY HAS GOOD NIGHT, LADY IRISH ROLL

ASHTABULA, OH- The Lady Irish kept the fire going through the weekend with an 18-1 trouncing of Edgewood.  Ursuline was supported offensively by Destiny Goodnight and Julia Nutter who had 4 hits apiece.  Also marking up the softball were Maris Barbato, Emily Holland, and Emma Ericson who had three hits each.  Paige Ogden, and Gia Caldrone contributed a pair of knocks as well.

Ogden also came through in the clutch leading the way with 5 RBI for the Green Machine.

Emma Ericson moved to 11-0 on the year in the circle as she struck out 6, and walked one in the victory.

The Lady Irish now prepare for Tuesday’s D2 District Semifinal against West Branch set for 5 pm at YSU.

SOUTH RANGE EDGES URSULINE AT CENE

STRUTHERS, OH- In one of the most anticipated games of the season, it was a battle of who could show less to the other team.  With both teams looking for a rematch with more at stake next week, South Range Coach Hanek and Ursuline Coach Weymer both wanted the win- but neither wanted to show their cards or give the other team even the slightest of advantages.

That said, the Raiders defeated Ursuline 3-1 on Friday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at one with the Raiders batting in the top of the fifth when South Range Senior Jared Bajerski drew a walk, scoring one run.

Nolan Shannon was impressive and led the Raiders to victory on the hill. He lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four.

Jonah Kirchner took the loss for Ursuline. He went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three.

Josh Stear led Raiders with two hits in three at-bats. The Raiders was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Brandon Mikos made the most plays with eight.

CANFIELD, OH- Ursuline 7 – South Range 1

Ursuline (23-2) beat South Range 7-1 behind Emily Holland’s 5-hitter for her 13th win of the season. Madelyn Miklandric had 2 hits and an RBI while Paige Ogden hit a 2-run triple in the 2nd inning.  Gia Caldrone hit a 2-run double in the 5th inning. Emma Ericson pitched a perfect final inning for the Lady Irish.  Bree Kohler hit a home run and single while M Slabach had two hits for the Raiders.

CALDRONE PERFECT AT THE PLATE, PROPELS LADY IRISH PAST HOWLAND

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Ursuline beat Howland 12-2 to win the Youngstown State Division 2 Sectional Championship. Emily Holland won her 12th game of the season as she gave up 3 hits, struck out 5 in 4 2/3 innings and hit an RBI double.  Gia Caldrone had 4 hits which included 2 doubles and 4 RBI while Destiny Goodnight also had 4 hits which included 4 runs, 3 stolen bases and 2 RBI.  Alyssa Sheely added a single, triple and 3 runs scored while Julia Nutter hit a single and double and 3 RBI.  Emma Ericson also had two hits for the Lady Irish (22-2). For the Lady Tigers, Bailey Beasom had 3 hits and Emily O’Connell had 2 hits.  Ursuline plays the winner of Salem/West Branch next Tuesday at YSU in the District Semis.

EARLY SCORES LEAD URSULINE TO VICTORY OVER BRISTOL

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Ursuline (21-2) beat Bristol 2-0 behind Emily Holland & Emma Ericson’s combined 3-hit shutout.  Holland struck out 6 in 4 innings and Ericson struck out 4 in 3 innings of relief work and also added 2 singles.

Maris Barbato went 3 for 3 with a single, double and triple while Alyssa Sheely hit an inside the park home run for the Lady Irish. For Bristol (13-2), Kayla Switzer and Miller each doubled.

The Lady Irish will now play host to the winner of the Howland/Niles game at YSU this Thursday at 5pm in the Division 2 Sectional Championship.

LADY IRISH STILL GOING STRONG, SHUTOUT GIRARD

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Ursuline (20-2) beat Girard 3-0 behind Emily Holland’s 3-hit shutout on Senior Night.  It was Holland’s 10th win as she struck out 8.  Seniors Destiny Goodnight had 2 hits while Gia Caldrone hit a single and a 2-run double in the 3rd inning.  Macy Ross added a single and triple for the Lady Irish.

Sam Dohy took the loss for Girard as she struck out 7 and doubled. Colver doubled and Durkin singled for the Indians.

LADY IRISH TURN THE LIGHTS OUT ON EDISON

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Ursuline (18-2) beat Richmond Edison in 5 innings as Emily Holland scattered 5 hits and picked up her 9th win over 4 innings of work. Holland also added a 2-run double in the 1st inning.  Maris Barbato and Destiny Goodnight each had 3 hits while Julia Nutter, Madelyn Miklandric and Paige Ogden each added 2 hits apiece.

Emma Ericson pitched the final inning for the Lady Irish. For Edison, Petrisko hit a single and double, and Babel doubled.
