JEFFERSON STUNS SECOND PLACE STREAKS

By Matt Maher

JEFFERSON, OH – The Falcons soared high on Wednesday night when they took down the 2nd place Madison Blue Streaks for an exciting end of season upset of 50-44. While the first half saw steady play between these two foes, the second half proved to be very favorable for Jefferson and with a dominant 3rd quarter they were able to use that frame to propel themselves past the Blue Streaks.

Madison led through the first half of quarter number one but Jefferson found life after a timeout was called and would go on to win the quarter 10-9. Madison saw Zoey Delaganis start her excellent night from the field with a NBA 3 and 2 field goals in the paint which just showed everyone she wasn’t messing around. Mia Contenza started her high scoring night with three 2’s while Riley Franklin and Kennidie Rogers both put up 2 each.

The scoring between these two didn’t let up and both teams found more luck from the hoop as Jefferson won the second frame 14-13, another close 1 point margin. Delaganis continued to sparkle with 9 points including three 2’s, an and-1 and a perfect start to her night at the line going 2-for-2. Tatum Bordeaux helped her team by adding two 3’s that came from the NCAA range both times. Contenza copy and pasted her score from the last quarter with three 2’s again.

Jefferson continued their great offensive showing and also found their defense to be more sound and aggressive as they put up 14 points and held Madison to just 8. 6 of the 8 points were scored by Delaganis who found two 2’s and went 2-for-2 from the line. Rogers found herself on top of her team in scoring this frame with 6 points of her own and Contenza put up 4 more points in the paint.

The Falcons saw what Madison could do in the 4th and were outscored 14-12 as the Blue Streaks got mighty close to completing their comeback. The big effort for Madison was led by Delaganis who found 7 more points with 4 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Mia Contenza had her best frame yet with 8 points all from 2 point range and showed us all that you don’t need to be fancy or hit long 3’s to be good as all of her points came in the paint.

Despite the efforts of the Blue Streaks all night long, Jefferson came out on top and stopped Madison from gaining any ground on Edgewood for first place. Mia Contenza finished her night with 24 points while Tatum Bordeaux scored 11 and Kennidie Rogers found 10. Madison had one player who stood atop the rest and that was Zoey Delaganis who tallied an impressive 31 points for her team. Madison (15-3, 8-3) will finish off their road trip on February 3rd when they take on Conneaut at 1:15PM while Jefferson (9-8, 5-6) will stay at home and host Edgewood on February 3rd at 2:30PM.
