COWBOYS RIDE COMES TO A STOP

BARBERTON, Ohio –

After dominating their way through the Northeast 2 district, the Chaney Cowboys (12-7) traveled to Barberton for a neutral site matchup with the surprise winner of the Northeast 4 district, Gilmour Academy (11-9).

The #10 seeded Gilmour Academy upset the district favorite, Warrensville Heights, in the district semi-finals then defeated fellow cinderella story, #11 seeded Padua Franciscan, for the district title.

Chaney, the clear favorite in this matchup, jump started the night thanks to a pair of three pointers from senior guard Sharrod Taylor. By the end of the first quarter of play, the Cowboys were up 15-5.

Trailing by 10, the Gilmour Academy Lancers came out inspired in the second quarter of play. Led by Ben DeMell’s 11 second quarter points, the Lancers were able to close the Cowboy’s lead to just 3 point with 2 minutes to play. Thanks to an offensive rebound and put back score from Quincy Jones, the Cowboys got their lead back out to 5 to end the half.

Coming out of the locker room, Gilmour’s Ben DeMell continued his stellar play. The 6-foot-5 senior scored 9 straight points for the Lancers, playing a key role in tying the game up with just 30 seconds to play in the 3rd.

Usually dominant on the offensive glass, the Cowboys had no answer for Gilmour Academy’s size. Taking their first lead of the game with 7 minutes remaining, the Lancers packed in the paint and forced the Cowboy’s to shoot.

Unfortunately for Chaney, they went cold just as the Lancers got hot. Scoring 22-points in the final quarter of play, Gilmour Academy completed another upset on their postseason run, defeating Chaney 59-52.

RAIDERS FALL JUST SHORT IN OVERTIME

CANFIELD OH- South Range did not shy away from a big challenge on Saturday as they welcomed in Division 1 powerhouse Akron Hoban. It was a battle to the end with the Knights outlasting the Raiders in an overtime thriller 92-83.

The Raiders grabbed a lead out of the gates, but it was clear from the tip that the game was going to be high tempo and high scoring. Both teams used their athleticism to trade transition buckets. After one quarter of play Hoban led 21-16.

In the second frame with a couple of players in foul trouble, it was the Raiders bench that came in and kept the pace for their offense. Emma Cunningham, and Hannah Crouse Player well in the quarter to keep it close. Crouse got a bucket at the end of the half to bring the Raiders within 3 at the break 40-37.

The Raiders opened the second half on a 8-0 run. Like most of the night though, moderate leads went away fast. Before a blink of an eye Hoban took a lead back and led 63-59 after 3. Izzy Lamparty had a great third quarter scoring 13 points in the frame with 5 rebounds.

The final frame was the lowest scoring quarter of the game, as the Raiders held Hoban to 13 points. With a break out layup by Izzy Lamparty the Raiders took a 76-74 lead with around 26 seconds left. Hoban’s Abby Stephens who didn’t score much in the game went to the free throw line and tied the game at 76 with 12 seconds left. Bree Kohler drove straight down the court but couldn’t finish a game winning shot, the Knights brought down the rebound and had 4 seconds to get down the floor. They very nearly did, but Hoban couldn’t get a shot off and the teams headed to overtime tied at 76.

The Knights outlasted a tired Raiders team in overtime, outscoring then 16-7 to win 92-83. The combined score of 175 points is the highest scoring game in South Range Girls Basketball history. The previous record was 147 in a 75-72 South Range win over Jackson Milton on February 8th, 2000.

NORDONIA HAS NO PROBLEMS AGAINST RANGE

HOWLAND OH- The South Range Lady Raiders opened their season at the Toni Ross Foundation Tournament at Howland on Friday night. They fell to Nordonia 48-22.

The Raiders struggled from the tip to get anything going against the Knights. Nordonia’s athleticism and pressure defense caused fits for the Raiders ball handlers. To add to their bad fortune, the Raiders couldn’t seem to buy a bucket from the field. They did however get some very tough shots to fall, showing flashes of their ability to complete tough finishes. On defense the Raiders held the Knights to their lowest offensive output in their young season. The other opponents for Nordonia were Hoover, and Buchtel. Two teams that went far in the tournament a season ago.

Izzy Lamparty led the offense with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Lexi Giles has 6 points and 5 rebounds.

The Raiders will look to bounce back Saturday night as they’ll play the loser of Howland vs Cleveland Shaw in the varsity consolation game. Tip off will be at 6:00 at Howland High School.
