LAKEVIEW GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH KEVIN HAYNIE

CORTLAND OH- It was a thrilling fall sports season for Lakeview. Not only did the volleyball team win the NE8 yet again, the football team took strides towards improvement showing everyone they weren’t a pushover. As the leaves change color and the winter weather comes upon us, the question remains can the excitement stay for the winter sports? On the girls side of basketball, the Bulldogs have plenty of returning talent and experience. With several players coming over from the volleyball squad, they are hoping success breeds more success.  Last season the Bulldogs finished the year with a record of 9-14.  They open their new campaign on the first official day of the season, November 18 at home against East.

Head coach Kevin Haynie was kind enough to take some time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to help us preview the season to come. He talks with Anthony Hartwig about leaders he is going to lean on, where the Bulldogs fit inside the tough NE8, and much more. Don’t miss Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Kevin Haynie

POLAND ONE STEP AWAY FROM THE STATE BRACKET

RAVENNA OH- It was the third matchup of the season between Poland and Lakeview on Tuesday night. The previous two meaning carried the fate of the league, but even more was at stake this time around.  The winner of this game would be one step closer to the coveted state championship trophy.  Poland who had beaten Lakeview by a combined 18-0 in the last 4 meetings continued their dominance of their conference rival with a 4-0 victory.

Ariel Grischow had a tremendous day for Poland. Her pair of goals led the team in scoring.  Kailyn Assion notched a goal as well.  Those two came in with a combined 7 goals on the entire season. Freshman standout Elliana Thompson scored a goal as well.

Poland will advance into the regional finals. They will be paired with Akron Manchester. That game will be played at Howland High School at 1:00 on Saturday.

PENALTY KICKS PROPEL LAKEVIEW TO REGIONALS

NILES OH- It was an instant classic between two quality teams on Thursday night in Niles. Waterloo came in undefeated looking to stay on a long awaited tournament run, and Lakeview looked to keep this incredible turnaround season going. As it turns outs 2 overtimes weren’t even enough to decide the winner. Still tied 2-2 after 2 extra periods the teams went into penalty kicks. Lakeview won the penalty kick round 6-4 to seal the district championship.

Kaira English struck first for Waterloo at the 29:03 mark. She got loose on a ball that squirted free out of Lakeview’s defense.  Lakeview responded before halftime as Anastasia Hall netted a goal off a corner kick.  Hall would strike again later in the first half Eliza Farr got the assist.  That was score at half time with the shots on goal even at 5-5.  English knotted the game back up pretty quick out of halftime off a Sydney Jackson corner kick.  Both teams showed off their defense the rest of the way until regulation ended.

In the first overtime, Waterloo goalie Sophia Wood made a great save that could have saved the game for the Vikings.  English made a good attempt on goal from an awkward position, but it sailed just wide.  In the second overtime, both defenses locked down not giving up any real scoring threats. The game would have to go to the most exciting part of tournament soccer, penalty kicks.  Lakeview made all 6 while their goalie Ava Hipple made an impressive diving save to her left to seal the deal.

Lakeview advances to the Division III Regional Semifinal against a familiar opponent.  They’ll meet up with Poland

LYTLE SWINGS 2022 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

EAST PALESTINE OH- What a volleyball season it has been. With a ton of teams having successful years in the YSN family, you can imagine there are also a lot of players who have put up big offensive numbers. Putting the ball down is the most electric thing you can do on a volleyball court. Nothing gets the crowd more involved than a kill that goes straight to the ground.  But who does it the best? Who has had the best offensive output this season.  It was a long discussion inside the YSN staff room, but we are proud to announce we have selected Lakeview’s senior middle blocker Tara Lytle as the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year.

Tara’s numbers definitely speak for herself when it comes to her offense. At the time that the selection was submitted Lytle had 359 kills on the season and averaged 4.7 kills per set.  That kill number is impressive enough. But with so many other players putting up comparable kill outputs, what stood out about Tara for us was her efficiency. Lytle hit at a percentage of .585 this year. That is video game type numbers. For those unfamiliar with the stat, hitting percentage is calculated by subtracting your errors from your kills and then putting that number over your total attacks. It’s as if batting average was calculated by subtracting every strike out from your hit total.  That is what makes it so hard to hit as high as Tara.  In 545 total attacks Lytle has only made 39 errors.

Lakeview ended the season at 21-4 on the year.  Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a great year, and once again congratulations to Tara Lytle who is YSN’s 2022 Offensive Player of the Year.

CRESTVIEW BREAKS OUT IN STATE RANKED MATCHUP

ORWELL OH- As soon as the Orwell bracket came out for the Division III tournament everyone knew how tough it would be to get out of. The bracket featured 4 stats ranked teams.  All four of those teams took care of business and made it to the district semifinals. It was set up for a great night in Grand Valley with back to back state ranked battles. The first of those was 8th ranked Crestview vs 9th ranked Lakeview.  It lived up to the hype, but the Rebels made all the right plays down the stretch and won the match in four sets.  (25-23 25-22 13-25 25-20)

LAKEVIEW DOESN’T FALTER TO CONFERENCE FOE

COLUMBIANA OH- They say it’s hard to beat a team three times in a season. That is exactly what Lakeview would have to do if they wanted a trip to the district semifinals. The Bulldogs didn’t waiver an inch as they swept Poland for the third time this season to advance. (25-13 25-15 25-9)

Emma Schmader and Tara Lytle both took the team lead in kills with 10 a piece.  Maggie Pavlansky had a productive night setting with 25 assists.  Maddie Bayus led the defense in the back row gathering 14 digs.  Brooke Schneider served well gathering 14 service points.

Lakeview advances to the district semifinals where they’ll match up with a fellow state ranked team in Crestview. First serve is set for 6:00 at Grand Valley High School on Wednesday.

LAKEVIEW CELEBRATES FINAL GAME ON HOME COURT

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview was voted as the four seed in the OHSAA Division 3 Northeast district. In a tough bracket full of state ranked teams, momentum is important. Lakeview took plenty of momentum forward as they celebrated their final game on their home floor with a sweep to move on to the next round. (25-6 25-8 25-11)

Tara Lytle did her thing in the middle leading the way with 16 kills.  Maggie Pavlansky spent her last night setting in the Lakeview gym leading the Bulldogs with 18 assists. Maddie Bayus had a big final home game as well. Not only did she lead the team in digs with 10, but she also celebrated her 1000th career dig on the court.  Reagan Price led the team in two categories with 2 blocks and 4 aces.

LAKEVIEW SENDS STATEMENT TO THE REST OF THE DISTRICT

MINERAL RIDGE OH- Before the OHSAA volleyball tournament gets started next week, Lakeview felt like testing their skills against a team in their bracket. They matched up with Mineral Ridge who is the 5 seed in the bracket.  Lakeview made a statement with a big sweep of the Rams on the road.  (25-15 25-14 25-21)

Tara Lytle led the Bulldogs in kills with 16 on the night.  Mallory Mailach set her and the other hitters up well and finished with 23 assists to lead the team.  Brooke Schneider and Maddie Bayus both led the Bulldogs in digs with 15 each.

Mineral Ridge’s offense was led by Faith Schneider and Ava Hulett both with 8 kills.  Samantha Aulet set the ball well with 16 assists.  Hulett was great on defense with a game-high 20 digs.

Lakeview has another matchup with a fellow member of the Grand Valley district as they travel to Kirtland. Mineral Ridge concludes the regular season with a record of 20-2.

THE BAYHEM IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- The last time we talked to Maddie Bayus it was her sophomore season. She was a brand new varsity libero and she set the world on fire from the start. Now as a senior, you can really tell just how much she’s even grown since her sophomore season. She is one of the best liberos in the area hands down.  Being a libero is still tough like we said it was in the last article for Maddie, but she makes it look easy.  Bayus has always been good at reacting to big hits and moving into the right position. What she has added to her weapons as a player is a massively good serve receive, and a leadership in the back row. When you watch Lakeview’s offense you’ll quickly discover how important good passing is to their success. They want to dominate the middle. You can’t do that unless you pass well. Maddie is a great passer, she has always been a great passer, but now she is making everyone else in the back row a better passer as well.  She’s a senior now and this is our last chance to see her on the floor.

Maddie has been excellent on defense this season. She has racked up 304 digs on the season which is by far the team lead.  Teams want to attack her on the serve, and she has made them pay. She leads the team in serve receives with 337.  Serve to her at your own risk.

Maddie was kind enough to talk to us again this season and let us know even more about her. She talks with Anthony Hartwig about the biggest difference between sophomore and senior seasons, future plans, and much more. There’s still plenty of Bayhem in Lakeview. Don’t miss a minute of it in the latest Lakeview Player Profile only on YSN!
