BUSEFINK BRINGS HER BEST TO THE TABLE

CORTLAND OH- Don’t look now, but Lakeview girls soccer has put together a seven win season so far.  Last season, the Bulldogs finished at 4-9-1.  It is one of the most dramatic turnarounds that we see in the sports arena this season. One of the big reasons why the Bulldogs have been able to turn the tide is their senior leadership.  One of the seniors we had to shine a light on is Lexi Busefink. She has been putting in the work for four years, and now it’s the time that her team results start to show. When asked what made the program’s turnaround possible, she said it’s all about everyone on the team accepting, understanding, and executing their job.  When the whole team is in sync on the soccer field, good things will happen.

Lexi heads in to this final season with high hopes. Her future isn’t set in stone yet, but we at YSN know she’s going to do great things.  She took the time in the morning to sit down with Anthony Hartwig and tell us more about her senior campaign.  They discuss her leadership qualities, her interests outside of soccer, and much more. It’s an exciting time in Lakeview, and we have you covered! Check out the latest Bulldog Soccer Player Profile only on YSN!

GIRARD BRINGS BULLDOGS DOWN TO EARTH

CORTLAND, OH- Girard keeps it rolling and stays unbeaten as they shut out their NE8 foe, Lakeview on Friday night, 49-0. From start to finish, the Indians were all over the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball. At the end of the first, Girard led 21-0 thanks to scores on their first two possessions and a 72-yard TD pass from Nic Bengala to Stephen Sims.

The Idians then unloaded on the Bulldogs in the rest of the first half with the help of back-to-back interceptions from Bobby Alejars who took it 35 yards to the house and Domenico Simone who made an unbelievable grab to set Girard up to score again to make it 35-0. As it came close to halftime, Lakeview hurt themselves again with a fumble which led to Bengala finding the endzone again to make it 42-0 at half. Girard would put up one more TD in the second half to finish off the game.

Girard will move to 5-0 on the season going into week 6 as they will host South Range on Friday. Lakeview moves to 3-2 and will travel to Struthers to take on the Wildcats Friday night.

TOTH IS RUNNING TOWARDS GLORY

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview means business this season! They took the high school football scene by storm in week one by blowing out last year’s number 1 seed out of Division VI LaBrae.  After an 0-10 2021, it didn’t take Lakeview long at all to pick up their first win. Not only did the team put themselves on the map, but so did junior Nolan Toth.  This running back has been a huge cog in the machine of the Bulldogs. After a close loss to Garfield, Lakeview won 2 in a row to now sit a 3-1 heading in to week 5.

Toth currently leads the running back room in rush yards as he has gained a total of 186 yards on 43 carries.  That’s an average of 4.3 yards per carry.  Toth is also a great asset on defense ranking 4th on the team in tackles with 17 on the year so far.

Toth took the time to hop on to Running Point this week to give us a peak inside this football program taking the world by storm.  He talks to Anthony Hartwig and DJ Yokley about what this program’s turnaround has taken, what his motivations are, and much more. Take the time to check out the latest Lakeview Football Player Profile on YSN.

PAVLANSKY KEEPS PROVING HERSELF

CORTLAND OH- Everybody already knew how good of an athlete Maggie Pavlansky was for Lakeview. Especially where she shines the brightest, the volleyball court. But as hard as it is to imagine, Pavlansky keeps finding ways to improve, and to make the players around her better.  We have had the chance to talk to Pavlansky many times over the years, and one thing that has always stuck out is her leadership ability. This senior season is when her leadership is going to show the biggest impact to the program. Not only is what she does this year help her team win now, but also how much it can win in the future. Pavlansky’s leadership impact will be felt for years to come, especially for the program’s setters.

As for this season, Pavlansky is putting up great numbers as always.  She currently holds 154 assists on the season, and averages 5.3 assists per set.  Pavlansky ranks 3rd on the team currently in digs with 96, and also has gotten herself 32 kills.  As far as her career, Pavlansky has 1,464 assists.

Pavlansky was gracious enough to take some time to come on to YSN’s Running Point this week to talk about her career. She talks with DJ Yokley, and Anthony Hartwig about her legacy, what the best feeling in sports is, and so much more. Take your last chance to hear a volleyball player profile from Maggie Pavlansky only on YSN!

BULLDOGS CONTINUE THEIR STRONG START

NILES OH- The last time the Lakeview Bulldogs got a victory against the Niles McKinley Red Dragons was 2017, since then they’ve had bad luck.  Either it would be a repeat or a change as Lakeview went down to Niles as both teams looked to move to three and one on the season. One team in Lakeview is gaining momentum while another one in Niles is trying to find out with their two stars Antuan Gardner and Matt Keeley out.

Lakeview opened up the first quarter rumbling and stumbling with senior Damien Natali, and junior running backs Hayden Bartram and Nolan Toth.  Natali got the first touchdown from four-yards out making it seven to nothing.

After an Anthony Budak interception, Lakeview had another chance to score, but was stopped on a fourth and goal at the one turning the ball over.  However, while the first half had a lot of defense, the second half would change.

The Bulldogs scored once more as Natali off a play action pass found Toth for a 38-yard touchdown pass making it 14-0.  Niles would’ve let go however as on the ensuing kickoff, Nathan Coots took it 82-yards to the four yard line. That led to Joe Smith taking it in but a high snap meant the PAT was no good making it 14-6.  The Bulldogs scored once more in the fourth as Natali got his second rushing touchdown, his third total 21-6.

Niles drove down the field for Smith to take it in two-yards out making it 21-13 and got the ball back after a four and out.  Budak would however throw his second interception to senior Luke Canzonetta as Lakeview for the first time since 2017 beat their Northeastern 8 rival Niles Red Dragons 21 to 13.

Niles Stats:

Anthony Budak: 102 yards passing, 2 interceptions, -4 yards rushing.

Joe Smith: 11 carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Keyshon Talley: 75 yards receiving.

Lakeview stats:

Damien Natali: 48 yards passing and a touchdown. 19 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Hayden Bartram: 16 carries for 61 yards

Nolan Toth: 16 carries  for 66 yards, one reception 38 yards and a touchdown.

Up next: Niles (2-2) will host NE8 conference rival Jefferson (3-1) who is coming off of a 21-6 loss to Girard.  Lakeview (3-1) will host (4-0) Girard next week.

After the game, YSNs Ian O’Brien caught up with coach Sam Bellino about the big victory and what to expect against Girard next week:
