LAKEVIEW REGAINS TOP SPOT IN NE8

GIRARD OH- Before last season the Northeast 8 was firmly owned by Lakeview. Then in 2021 Girard stormed in, beat the Bulldogs twice, and won their first NE8 championship. This season both teams return the core of their roster. It was Lakeview though that took round 1 and an early lead in the conference. (18-25 25-22 28-26 27-25)

Tara Lytle was clutch for the Bulldogs leading them with 20 kills. Her partner in crime rotated in the middle when she rotated out, Reagan Price dominated to 18 kills.  Maggie Pavlansky led the setters in assists with 27. Maddie Bayus had an amazing game defensively finishing with 38 digs.

Lauren Pallone put on a show herself as she led the Indians offense with 20 kills.  Bree Latell finished in double figures behind her with 11.  Allison Durkin set up 36 assists on the night in a great performance.  Bailey Walters led the back row defense with 16 digs.

Lakeview will be back in action next Tuesday as they travel to Poland to continue league play.  Girard’s next game is at Poland as well as they travel to see the Bulldogs Thursday.

MIGHTY ARE THE BULLDOGS

CORTLAND OH- In a matchup between volleyball titans on Saturday morning it was Lakeview that flexed the most muscles. After storming to a 2-0 on Austintown Fitch, Lakeview held on for a four set victory. ((26-24 25-19 17-25 25-16)

Tara Lytle continued to lead the Bulldogs offense gathering 20 kills on the day. Mallory Milach set up the offense with 28 assists.  Emma Schmader led the defense up front with 3 blocks. Maddie Bayus was the defensive star in the back row totaling in 31 digs.

For Austintown Fitch, Jocelyn Jourdan have everything she had to the cause. She finished with 22 kills.  Rylie Simons set her up quite a bit and collected 31 assists herself.  Simons completed a double double with 16 digs to lead the team.

Lakeview awaits their biggest test of the season on Tuesday as the travel to Girard, the defending NE8 Champions.  Fitch will try and bounce back from their first loss of the season as they host Strongsville on Tuesday.

GARFIELD COMES THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH

CORTLAND, Ohio – In a rematch from week 2 of last season, the Lakeview Bulldogs (1-1) played host to the visiting Garfield G-Men (2-0). While last season the G-Men needed just four minutes to break the seal, tonight’s matchup in Cortland took twenty-three minutes and fifty-five seconds to see its first points of the night.

Outstanding defense from both Lakeview and Garfield left the teams to combine for an even one-hundred yards of first half offense. The only trip to the red zone for either team came from Garfield in the closing seconds of the half, which would be capped by a thirty-eight-yard field goal off the right foot of Ethan Bittence with five seconds before the break.

Coming out of the break Garfield head coach, Mike Moser, made a change to the offensive game plan that had mostly failed in the first half, giving the Bulldogs a heavy dose of running backs Jesse Grace and Keegan Sell. The new gameplan paid off quickly for the G-Men as their opening drive of the second half would chew up seven and a half minutes of the third quarter clock before Keegan Sell would put the exclamation point on the drive from two yards out.

Lakeview would go three and out to start their second half. Garfield would put together a solid drive before turning it over on fourth down in Lakeview territory. The Bulldogs would go three and out again, but would flip field position on a solid punt by Owen Vlk. After a holding call would set the G-Men back on first down, Garfield would be forced to punt the ball away. The ensuing punt would be blocked by junior Nolan Toth. The ball would roll into the endzone where Sam Balest would fall on it for the score, drawing the Bulldogs to within a possession.

Garfield would respond however with another long-sustained drive to put the game on ice with a twenty-six-yard touchdown run from Jesse Grace. The ensuing extra point was good, bringing the score to it’s final, 17-7 in favor of the G-Men.

BIG PERFORMERS

LAKEVIEW:

Nolan Toth: 1 blocked punt

Sam Balest: 0-yard return of Blocked Punt for TD

GARFIELD:

Keegan Sell: 13 carries, 54 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

Garfield: After gutting out a victory on the road, the G-Men will return home next Friday night for a matchup with the Warren JFK Eagles (2-0). These two schools have faced off three years in a row, with Garfield coming out on top in each bout, with no game ending in more than two scores difference.

LAKEVIEW DOMINATES IN NE8 OPENER

HUBBARD OH- Lakeview has been dominant in the NE8 over the years. Girard, and Jefferson are the only teams that escaped a league match with them with a victory. Hubbard tried to change that on Tuesday night, but the Bulldogs had no part of it. They swept the Eagles in straight sets.  (25-6 25-15 25-15)

Tara Lytle continues to impress as she finished with 18 kills to lead the team.  Brooke Schneider was a service master finishing the night with 5 aces.  Maggie Pavlansky set up the offense well with 16 assists.  Maddie Bayus set the tone out of the back row with 20 digs.  Lytle led the front row defense with 4 blocks.

Alyssa Gregory had a nice defensive day for Hubbard with 14 digs.  Sydney Ward led the Eagles in kills with 3. Ella Snyder had 5 assists.

Lakeview returns to action on Thursday as they host Niles. Hubbard is also in action Thursday as they host Girard.

LYTLE’S LAST RIDE

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview has seen a tremendous amount of success in volleyball in the recent past. One of the key cogs to their fantastic attack is senior Tara Lytle. Lytle has been on the varsity floor since her freshman season, and has gotten better every year. Now as a captain she looks to not only lead the team statistically, but verbally and emotionally as well.

In 2021 Tara collected 357 kills, which was by far the best season of her career. What was more impressive than the high kill number though was her efficiency. Lytle had a hitting percentage of .530! That is astronomical. She made less than 70 errors on 599 total attacks.  She averaged 4.5 kills per set.  Tara also led the team from the service line collecting 33 aces on the season, while finishing second on the squad in blocks with 47.  With all these stats, and the plethora of volleyball experience behind her, it promises to be an electric senior campaign for Lytle.

Tara took the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to talk with us about her senior season. She talks with Anthony Hartwig and Ty Bartell about being a leader, some personal goals she has put together for the season, and much more. Lakeview fans this is your last chance to see Tara in action. Don’t miss a minute of it, and check out this exclusive YSN interview!

BRIGHT DAYS ARE AHEAD IN LAKEVIEW

CORTLAND OH- Lakeview football has been searching for positives for a while. They came into the 2022 season on a 16 game losing streak, and they’d lost 25 of their last 28. Well, you can drown all of that negativity away because they opened the season with an emphatic win over last year’s 1 seed in Division VI LaBrae 34-7.

Nolan Toth finished the Bulldogs first drive of the game with a three yard touchdown, and they would never look back.  Damien Natali took the quarterback role and finished with 115 rushing yards on 13 carries and found the end zone twice. Hayden Bartram also scored for the Bulldogs offense.  Lakeview totaled 291 rushing yards on the day.

The Lakeview defense was up for the task too as they held the Vikings to just 149 total yards.
