SCHADL GOES OFF AS MCDONALD UPENDS BEARS

LEETONIA OH- Two of the best runners in the area were slated to go against each other in Friday night’s division 7 regional quarterfinal between Leetonia and McDonald. Marco Ferry and Dom Shadl put on a show, but it was Shadl who was front stage as the Blue Devils ran to a 41-24 victory.

The Blue Devils short ahead with a huge first half that saw Schadl run for 157 yards and four touchdowns before Leetonia could find any balance on offense. On the flip side Marco Ferry struggled his way to just over 50 rush yards in the first two quarters.

The second half saw Leetonia finally find life on offense. They scored 16 unanswered points to cut the Blue Devil lead to 28-16. A big key to their spark was a fumbled kickoff that the Bears were able to recover. Ferry then ran them to the one yard line, eventually putting it in. After McDonald answered, Dylan Lennon found a big target in Jaedon Finley for a 39 yard score to make it 34-24. Schadl would have the Last Laugh though as he ran one in from 39 yards out to get McDonald to the final score of 41-24.

McDonald will find out their next round opponent on Saturday as the game between Independence and Lucas was postponed due to weather. Leetonia is still eligible to schedule a regular season game.

CLIPPERS GLIDE OVER LEETONIA TO ADVANCE

Tori Long did what she does best and led the offense with 8 kills. She also dug up 6 digs. Julia Rapp had a very productive day with 7 kills, and 5 blocks. She served 2 aces. Grace Witmer finished with a double double totaling 12 assists, and 13 digs. Maci Linhart also collected 13 digs to share the team lead.

Columbiana moves on to the sectional final where they’ll host twelve seeded Sebring. First serve is slated for 4:00.

FACING MASON

LEETONIA OH- One of the staples of Leetonia’s team this season is their defense. They have been able to control the line of scrimmage at will against their opponents. Size certainly helps, and one of their biggest defenders is senior defensive end Mason Mellinger.

Mason has plenty of size to clog up any holes offensive lines try to create. But don’t think that his size means he can’t come off the edge with athleticism. He’s an asset to one of the best defensive lines Leetonia’s had in their program’s history.

Mason also brings a strong personality to the team. First on the field, and the last to leave the Senior makes sure the young kids on the team understand the standard of Leetonia football. They look to him as an example.

Mason sat down with YSN’s own Derrick Grossen to discuss his senior campaign. They talk about the defensive mindset, his goals this season, and much more. Don’t sleep on the Bears front line and hear from one of the leaders in “Facing Mason”

GET ON THE FERRY TRAIN

LEETONIA OH- Marco Ferry night just be the best running in the area, and he resides in Leetonia. It’s hard to not notice how dominant he has been over the years in the Bears backfield. Defenses have thrown out just about everything they can think of to try and slow Ferry down, and nothing has worked. Like a runaway train Ferry has barreled through the defenses of the EOAC in this shortened 2020 season.

Ferry also brings strong senior leadership to the Bears this season. He did not wake up as dominant as he is, he’s worked endlessly to put himself in this position. His work ethic and dedication are a constant reminder to his teammates that anything can be accomplished when hard work is in the equation. They’ve clearly taken that to heart as the Bears have stormed to a 5-1 season, and a 3 seed in their division.

Marco took the time to talk to YSN’s Derrick Grossen this week to discuss his senior season and the opportunity he and the Bears have in front of them. Don’t miss this exclusive interview with one of the best backs in the area with “Get On The Ferry Train”
