MCKEEVER’S GOT THE KEYS TO VICTORY

LOUISVILLE OH- Louisville Softball is coming off an incredible state championship season, where the last game they played was a perfect image of their whole season….crazy! A ten inning thriller with Lakota East ended with the Leopards on top. One of their keys to making the state run was Sydney McKeever.

Sydney has been playing softball for a long time, and she has her dad as a travel coach. The sport has brought the two of them even closer together. Through all the hard days this sport can bring Sydney’s work ethic shined through. It’s one of the reasons she has become a Division I talent. Highly recruited mainly for her speed, McKeever has signed to play at Toledo next season. Rockets head coach Joe Abraham had this to say on the press release about Sydney’s signing on utrockets.com. “She is incredibly fast, but more importantly she has that “it” factor on the field.”

Sydney led her team last season in steals with 24, and has collected 65. She also led her team in singles on the season with 46. In her career as a Leopard. She has 119 runs scored. Sydney promises to be a force at Toledo, and will surely be missed in coach Arney’s lineup in Louisville.

Anthony Hartwig has the chance to catch up with Sydney through video chat this week. They discussed being a state champion, her recruitment process, and much more. You won’t want to miss the debut of YSN’s Louisville Softball Player Profile with “McKevver’s Got the Keys to Victory.”

THIRD TIMES A CHARM FOR CRESTVIEW

STRUTHERS OH- Crestview and Liberty has already met two times this season coming in to Wednesday night’s district semifinal matchup. Liberty took both games. The first matchup was a lopsided 18 point Leopard win, the second was much more competitive as the Rebels cut it to 4. They say third time is a charm and that couldn’t be more true for Crestview as this time they dominated Liberty from the tip and upset the Struthers district 1 seed 69-53.

Liberty actually started the game on top. They hit some perimeter shots to take leads in the first quarter. Crestview was able to score right with them, which would become a huge advantage as the game went on. Unlike the first two matchups, the Rebels did not let the Leopards get out to a big lead. After a quarter Liberty led by just one 12-11.

The shift of momentum came in the closing minutes of the second quarter when Crestview went on a 12-0 run to end the half and turn a 16-15 deficit to a 27-16 halftime lead. That lead only grew as the third quarter ticked on. Crestview saw themselves up by 18 midway through the third. They could taste the upset. However, Liberty has a quick strike offense and everyone in the gym understood that this could be a close game real quick. The Leopards held true to their form to close out the third and cut the Rebel lead to 10. A bucket right before the buzzer of the third made it 47-35 Crestview after 3.

In the fourth quarter it was clear
Liberty’s strategy was to put Crestview on the free throw line and make the game longer. That backfired as Crestview shot 21 for 27 on the line. Free throw shooting kept the Leopards at bay and secured the big upset victory for the Rebels.

Crestview has four players in double figures, and was led by Tanner Hoffer with 19. Krista Perry finished with 16, Addison Bandy got herself 15. Mara Halas added 10.

Crestview advances to the district championship against South Range on Saturday night at Struthers. The start time is set for 7:00.

CHANEY HAS NO TROUBLES WITH LEOPARDS

YOUNGSTOWN OH- The Cowboys had three scorers finish with 17 or more in an 88-46 rout of Liberty Tuesday night.

The Cowboys offense seemed unstoppable in a game that was a make up from a couple of weeks ago. The Cowboys scored their season-high 88 points.

Sharrod Taylor led the Cowboys with 22 points. Quincy Jones finished with 18, and Travis Easterly added 17.

BOARDMAN POWERS PAST LEOPARDS

BOARDMAN, OH- Boardman was able to contain a good shooting Louisville team on Tuesday to earn a 59-35 non-conference win.

The Spartans were led by Derrick Anderson with 20 points and 4 rebounds. Tommy Fryda continued to shoot well, connecting on four 3-pointers, including 3 in the first quarter to blow the game open early. Ethan Andersen was strong inside with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Daeone Martin has a nice night with 8 points. Trey DePietro had a strong game with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Zach Ryan and Connor Miller provided the defensive toughness all night. Ryan grabbing 7 rebounds and Miller grabbing 4 boards. Charlie Davis played good minutes, grabbing 2 rebounds. Andrew Clark connected on a 3 and Joey Zahran rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

The Leopards scoring was spread evenly across the team. Will Aljancic, Collin Chambers, Colton Jones, and Cory Noble all scored a team-high 6 points each to lead Louisville.

The win was Boardman’s 8th in a row and moves their record to 18-1 on the season, while Louisville falls to 12-7.

POLAND ALL SMILES IN WIN OVER LIBERTY

POLAND, OH- The Poland Lady Bulldogs were in a place on Saturday where they haven’t been in quite some time, in a losing streak. The schedule did not get any easier either as they welcomed in a one-loss Liberty team. However, Poland looked sharp as they dominated Liberty in a 63-43 victory.

The first quarter lived up to the billing of the matchup. Liberty and Poland traded blows back and forth. Both offenses seemed to be in a good rhythm as the first quarter ended with 12-11 Liberty lead. This trend would not last, however, as Poland’s defense started to rush the Leopards into plenty of unforced turnovers. That coupled with Liberty foul trouble made It easy for Poland to shoot ahead and take a commanding lead.

Things were never in doubt for the Bulldogs after halftime as the closest the Leopards could get in the second half is 9 points. Poland’s defense is what everyone would expect. Their offense however who has struggled at times this year really had success. 63 points is the highest total for the Bulldog offense, and on the other end of the floor 43 was by far the lowest total Liberty had been held to this season.

Jackie Grisdale led the Bulldogs with 20 points 7 rebounds and Kailyn Brown gathered a double-double with 17 points 10 rebounds.

Poland returns to action Monday as they host Hubbard.
