CANFIELD’S QUICK START GUIDES THEM TO A REGIONAL FINAL

BARBERTON, OH- The Canfield Cardinals and the Marlington Dukes met in the regional-semifinal in division 2. The Cardinals went on the road in the regular season to beat Marlington by a final of 49-48 on December 19th, 2022. Canfield got off to a blazing start in the regional-semifinal which guided them to victory on Tuesday night.

Canfield outscored Marlington 13-5 in the first quarter by splashing in the three ball. Canfield senior Abby Muckleroy came out of the gates red hot knocking down three triples in the first quarter. Marlington only made one field goal in the first quarter, with the three other points coming from the free throw line. In the second quarter, Canfield kept the foot on the gas pedal outsoring Marlington 13-5 to take a 16 point lead at the half.

The Dukes did not go down without a fight as they buckled up defensively in the third quarter. The Dukes outscored Canfield 14-8 to tail by 10 at the end of the third quarter. Marlington’s Chelsea Evanich scored 5 third quarter points, including a three point play to pull the Dukes within single digits. The fourth quarter went Canfield’s way as they were able to play solid defense to advance to the regional final by a score of 41-32.

Canfield was led by Muckleroy who scored 15 total points, all of which coming from deep. Carlie Harmon added to the scoring with 10 total points. The Dukes were led by Evanich who scored 13 points, while Elizabeth Mason was in double figures with 11. Marlington had a great season winning 24 games and advancing to the regional after beating Perry 54-49 in the district final. Canfield keep there season alive winning game number 25 and wil play the winner of CVCA and Canal Fulton Northwest. The regional final is scheduled for Friday at 7 P.M. at Barberton High School.

CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 3) WITH MATT REEL

CANFIELD OH- The Cardinals have done it! After a ten year drought in the program Canfield has won a district championship.  The first for head coach Matt Reel in his impressive career.  The Cardinals were able to knock off one of the top 10 teams in the state Salem 32-26.  With the win, Canfield advances to the regional semifinals on Tuesday in Barberton. They will have to get past Marlington who was seeded third in the Northeast District. The game is slated to tip off at 6:00.

Canfield head coach Matt Reel took time to sit down with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig after their district championship to reflect on what the win means, what it will take in regionals to come out on top, and so much more. CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 2) WITH MATT REEL

CANFIELD OH- Canfield has had their eyes on a possible district championship all season long.  It has been one of the team goals to go along with a conference championship.  They already got the AAC, and now they have a district in their grasp.  The Cardinals have steamrolled through the district tournament so far.  Now with a couple practices left before the big game, the Cardinals are fine tuning the little things. They know it’s going to take their best effort of the season to beat Salem.

CANFIELD STAYS A-TOP THE AAC IN HOME VICTORY OVER AUSTINTOWN

CANFIELD, OH- The Canfield Cardinals and the Austintown Fitch Falcons met for the second time in AAC play on Saturday night in Canfield. The first meeting was back on December 14th at Austintown with the Cardinals taking that one by a final of 48-35. The Falcons made it much closer the second time around, but Canfield used a three point attack to pick up win number 15 of the season.

Both Austintown and Canfield came out of the gates slow with long offensive possessions and turnovers as the score was just 11-8 Canfield after one quarter. The second quarter was a completely different dynamic, as the Cardinals hit five three-pointers in the second quarter to take a 28-22 lead at the half. The Cardinals and the Falcons went back and forth in the third quarter, but Canfield would have a ten point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Falcons turned it on early in the fourth quarter to make it a one possession ballgame, but Canfield was able to get to the free throw line down the stretch, knocking in 7 charity tosses to seal the deal by a final of 57-51.

The Falcons were led by point guard Destanie McCullough who dropped in 12 points, while senior guard Zayda Creque was right behind with 11 points on multiple made three-pointers. For Canfield, the trio of Jenna Triveri, Kate Sahli and Abby Muckleroy combined for 35 points in the win. Sahli led all scorers with 14 points on the night.

Canfield is now 15-1 on the season with a clean record of 3-0 in AAC play. Austintown Fitch is now 8-9 overall. To hear Canfield’s coach Matt Reel after last nights ballgame, check out this interview brought to you by Cocca’s Pizza:

 

CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT REEL

CANFIELD OH- It’s just about go time for basketball in Canfield. On the girls side of things, the program is in the middle of a very successful stretch. Last season the Cardinals won a share of the AAC, splitting with Howland. They’re impressive record of 16-7 (6-1) made them one of the most respected programs in the area. In 2022-2023 they move down to Division 2. This gives Canfield a lot of confidence that they can make some postseason moves.  Before all that though they have a tough regular season schedule to get through. The Cardinals open up with a returning district champion welcoming in West Branch on November 22nd.

Head coach Matt Reel goes in to his 13th season at he helm. He was gracious enough to take the time to come on to YSN’s Running Point to preview the year to come. He talks with Anthony Hartwig  about his returning starters, some new faces to watch out for, and so much more. CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT REEL

CANFIELD OH- Here comes another season of Canfield basketball, and girls basketball coach Matt Reel is starting yet another season at the helm. It will be a very productive season for the Cardinals as they return bundles of talent to their roster. They will feature a very trying schedule to prepare them for the Division 1 tournament. Canfield is one of the smallest Division 1 girls teams in the state. That means of course, they have to expose themselves to the style of play they will see. They open the season Saturday November 20th at home vs Perry.

Coach Reel took a free period to stop by YSN’s Running Point to help us preview the Cardinals season. He talked with Ty Bartell, and Anthony Hartwig about their tough schedule, the returning faces to be excited about, and a lot more. Episode 1 of Coach’s Corner with Matt Reel is live.

CANFIELD GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MATT REEL

CABFIELD OH- Like most teams in the basketball community, Canfield has had to navigate the problems that the pandemic has presented. The uncertainty and fluidity of the schedule has taken it’s tole on the basketball programs. Through it all the Cardinals have persevered through the adversity. Head Coach Matt Reel attributes the success to their players attitudes, personality, and leadership. Canfield has gotten themselves to a record of 8-6 and get better every time they step on the floor. They are coming off a win over Fitch, and look ahead to a matchup against Ursuline on Saturday.

Coach Reel was nice enough to sit down and chat with YSN’s Anthony Hartwig to talk about his program. They discuss his career, how his team has handled the crazy year, and so much more.
