LEOPARDS SHINE ON SENIOR NIGHT

LOUISVILLE OH- Senior nights always bring up a vast array of emotions for every program. That is no different with Louisville. The Leopards honored their seniors on Monday night the best way they knew how, by beating a really tough opponent. A solid Strongsville came to town and had every intention on spoiling the party.  The Leopards however would not be denied as they rushed off to a 53-46 win.

Brooke Haren put together another strong night as she scored 20 points. 7 of those points came in the final quarter.  Taylor McCully was also in double figures with 16 points.  Taryn Miglich was able to chip in 11.

Louisville hits the road again next as they travel to Akron East on Thursday.  The varsity start time is set for 6:30.

ANOTHER DOUBLE DOUBLE FOR WELLMAN, ANOTHER WIN FOR BROOKFIELD

MATHEWS OH- Cailey Wellman has been a double double machine this season for Brookfield. Not only is Cailey consistently getting in to double figures with her point totals, but she might just be one of the most dominant rebounders we have in the YSN family.  Another double double from her on Thursday night let Brookfield cruise to a 63-30 win over Mathews.

Sophia Hook led the Warriors with 19 points on the night. Wellman finished her double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Logan finished the night for the Warriors with 5 assists, and 4 points. Mikenzie Jumper was in double figures as well with 13 points.

Brookfield will wait until the new year to return to league action as they host Champion on January 2nd.

RESERVE LOOKS GOOD TO START

BERLIN CENTER OH- After it was all said and done Monday night in Western Reserve, head coach Steve Miler would admit that it wasn’t the best basketball his team has ever played. But in their first game of the season, the Blue Devils had to deal with all kinds of adversity that they’ll surely meet again during the long basketball season. Whether it was stretches of rough shooting, foul trouble, or Mathews press, Reserve fought through it all to come away with a comfortable 52-36 win.

Lisa Eichert showed how much she’s looking forward to a healthy season as she dashed her way to 17 points to lead the Devils. Alyvia Hughes did a good job chipping in 13.  Brooke Schantz fought some early foul trouble but became a big factor in the second half finishing with 9.  Angelina Cappabianca nailed a pair of triples on her way to 9 points as well.

Mathews was led by Brooke Bauer who tied Eichert for the game-high with 17.  The Mustangs couldn’t get much more contribution offensively, which ended up hurting them.

Western Reserve will continue their season on December 1st against Hubbard.  Mathews schedule sees them take on Pymatuning Valley next up still looking for their first win.

TIGERS PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF

NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio –

It took no time at all for Kolten Ruark and the Springfield Tiger offense to find its rhythm in Friday’s first round matchup against the Mathews Mustangs. Ruark threw two first quarter touchdowns, and the Springfield defense blanked Mathews in a 42-0 routing.

After forcing a Mathews (8-3) three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, Ruark connected with Seandelle Gardner on the Tigers third play from scrimmage on third down for a 70-yard score less than 4 minutes into the game. Another three and out for Mathews and the Tigers offense was back in business. Springfield would march down the field for their second score of the first quarter, this one a Ryan Carcelli two-yard touchdown run.

Already ahead by two scores, Springfield would capitalize on a Mathews fumble that would result in the Tigers starting their third drive in short field. On the first play of the drive, Ruark would connect with Sean Guerriero in the endzone for a 28-yard touchdown.

Springfield would score once more prior to the break on a Dante Gentile 13-yard touchdown run. While the Mustangs started to find some success on their final possession of the opening half, the drive would stall out in Tiger territory just before the break.

Starting with the ball in the second half, Ruark and the Tiger offense picked up right where they left off, as the junior signal caller would connect with Guerriero again, this time for a 46-yard TD. With the running clock enacted, Mathews would methodically move the ball down the field again but stall out once more in Tiger territory.

Springfield would score once more on the night on an 8-yard touchdown run by Carcelli for his second of the night, bringing the score to its final,42-0.

BIG PERFORMERS

SPRINGFIELD:

Kolten Ruark: 6/6 passing, 176 yards, 3 TDs

Ryan Carcelli: 17 carries, 122 yards, 2 TDs

Sean Guerriero: 3 catches, 83 yards, 2 TDs

Seandelle Gardner: 3 catches, 93 yards, 1 TD

Dante Gentile: 4 carries, 44 yards, 1 TD

MATHEWS:

Ethan Petak: 30 total yards

RUARK’S PROGRESSION

Taking the reins at the beginning from the storied Beau Brungard lost to graduation, Ruark struggled through the beginning parts of this season. The junior signal caller completed just 53% of his passes in the Tigers first four games, throwing 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Since the Springfield slow start at 0-4, Ruark has captained the Tigers offense to 35 points per game in their 7 straight wins, throwing for 769 yards at a 70% completion mark, 13 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions.

For Springfield to make a deep postseason run that the Tiger faithful have become accustomed to, Ruark will need to continue to play at a high level as the Tigers start to ramp up their competition, much like the beginning part of this season.

ROUND TWO

After taking care of business in their only guaranteed home game of the postseason, the three-time defending champs of region 21 will take on the back-to-back region 25 winners, the Warren JFK Eagles (9-1).

JFK’s 30 first quarter points in their opening round matchup put the opposing Fairport Harding Skippers in a hole early and the Eagles never looked back, winning 37-9.

FALCONS OUTMUSCLE STRONGSVILLE

STRONGSVILLE OH-

Coming off a loss in Week 6, The Austintown Fitch Falcons looked to bounce back on the road in Week 7. Going from Division 2 Massillon Washington to Division 1 Strongsville, Fitch had the goal of getting back to the run on offense, while putting up better defensive stands. Going into the first possessions, one thing was made very clear, a defensive battle was to be expected. With The Mustangs showing poise and confidence in their red zone and goal line defense against a dangerous, quick-striking, Austintown offense. Forcing fumbles near the goal line, Strongsville was able to create key turnovers that stalled multiple drives by The Falcons. However, Fitch was able to break through on a 21 yard connection from DeShawn Vaughn Jr. to Dominic Perry to help put Austintown up 7-0. The touchdown by Perry marks three consecutive games where the receiver has scored.

After giving up the initial touchdown, The Mustangs were able to get in field goal range and cut their deficit to 4 points, 7-3. Back and forth defensive stops by both teams ensued, with Fitch not helping themselves in the penalty game. Getting themselves behind the chains on offense numerous times, Strongsville made them pay for key mental mistakes. DeShawn Vaughn Jr. showcased why he is not just a threat when he is behind center, grabbing his third defensive interception of the season to set Fitch up before the half. Running it back on offense, Vaughn went to Dan Evans III immediately following his pick to put The Falcons up 14-3.

A second half shutout by the Austintown defense set up three more scores in the second half to help Fitch seal their sixth victory of the season 35-3. The Falcons (6-1) will face their final road test of the regular season, traveling to Wadsworth (5-2) to battle The Grizzlies.

EDISON WINS THEIR FOURTH STRAIGHT

CORTLAND OH- Coning in to Week 4, Edison’s defense had only given up 8 points all season. They welcomed in their biggest challenge yet on Friday though as a high flying Mathews team matched up with them in Lakeview.  Mathews had scored 113 points in the last two weeks. Edison’s defense stood tall though, and their offense blew up in the second half to run away with a 48-10 win.

After Mathews opened up the game with a short touchdown pass to make it 7-0, the Wildcats defense only allowed 3 points the rest of the way. The Wildcats won the second half 34-0.

Edison will continue their season in Week 5 as they host Steubenville Central Catholic.

LEETONIA STRUGGLES TO SLOW DOWN MUSTANGS

LEETONIA OH- Leetonia’s defense would not get a break in Week 3 as the Bears welcomed in the undefeated Broncos of Mathews. The Mustangs came into Week 3 outscoring their opponents 102-15.  The task was great for the Bears, and though their effort was commendable they fell to Mathews 49-0.

The Mustangs struck quick on a touchdown run by sophomore Dominic Toto. He would score again on a bubble screen for the Mustangs.  Mathews would then recover a fumble and run it back for a touchdown.  After that first half however, the Bears never stopped fighting holding the Mustangs to 14 second half points.

Tatum Finley found some success in the Bears offense as a bright spot for Leetonia. The junior receiver continues to work hard for his team.

Leetonia looks ahead to a matchup with East Palestine in Week 4. Both teams will be looking for their first win.

MARATHON TITLE GAME DOESN’T FALL URSULINE’S WAY

RAVENNA OH- They say a season isn’t a sprint, it is a marathon. They don’t say that too often about a single game. However on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Ravenna, Ursuline and Tuslaw found themselves in a battle of wills that went 13 innings. Tuslaw battled back from trailing twice in extras, the second time they broke through for a walk off 4-3 win breaking the hearts of the Irish.

Much like in Wednesday’s regional semifinal against South Range, Tuslaw scored in their first trip to the plate. Kylie Mazzocca came up with a 2 out RBI single that scored Macaira Fox who walked to lead off the game.  However, unlike their game against South Range the Mustangs were unable to continue to tack on runs as the game went on. Paige Ogden kept them quiet for the next 8 innings. They wouldn’t score again until the 9th.

Ursuline tied up the game at 1-1 in the 4th as Layni  Bednar hit an infield single to score Mia Opalick. The pitcher’s duel continued through extras. In the 9th inning, Ursuline took a 2-1 lead as Katie Koulianos singled home Liza Barbato.  However, Tuslaw opened up their half of the 9th with a single, and then an error. It put runners on 1st and 3rd with no one out. After a strikeout, Camryn Kiefer hit into a fielder’s choice to Bednar who tried to get the out at home to no avail. The Mustangs would strand two more runners though to keep the game going.

Fans would have to wait until the 13th inning to see more scoring as Maddie Miklandric mashed the first pitch of the frame over the wall to give Ursuline another lead in extras 3-2.  The Mustangs never said die.  After the first two batters got out, Mazzocca came up with a two out double, she would move over and then score the tying run on a wild pitch ball 4.  Tuslaw catcher Miriam Peterson would come to the plate with the game winning run on 2nd. She hadn’t had a hit all day, but she took a 0-2 pitch opposite field into right for a walk off single to win the game.

Paige Ogden finished her amazing senior season with a gutsy 11 innings of work in the circle. She gave up 1 earned run on 4 hits and struck out 18 while only walking 2.  She threw 156 pitches on the day before being relieved by Opalick. Opalick went 1.2 IP and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out 3.

Meredith Rankl went the distance for Tuslaw. 13.0 IP giving up 11 hits but just 3 earned runs. She struck out 5 and walked none.  She threw 142 pitches.

TIMELY HITS ELUDE SOUTH RANGE

RAVENNA OH- It is never east to get through tournament play. South Range learned that lesson the tough way on Wednesday as they fell to Tuslaw in the regional semifinals 6-1. As the game developed the Raiders put plenty of traffic on the base paths. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t get that big hit with runners on. Tuslaw did just that and slowly built their lead on their way to a 6-1 victory.

Juli Stachowicz was responsible for the only run of the game with a solo home run. She was 1-3.  Jayli Wilt went 1-2 on the day.  Kelly Szolek also went 1-2. Raegan Irons walked twice, and Jamie Feren was hit by a pitch.

Sam Susany got the start in the circle. She went 5.2 IP and gave up 3 earned runs on 7 hits.  She struck out 5.

South Range ends their season with a record of 22-7. They graduate Raegan Irons and Taylor Smesko from the varsity roster.
