CAMPBELL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH ANOTHER WIN

CAMPBELL OH- The Campbell-Memorial Red Devils have been a team that had a lot of questions to answer at the beginning of the season. Leaving people curious about how far they can go? How will they compete in the tough MVAC Gray Division? 

Those questions were answered one after another, with Campbell compiling a perfect 13-0 conference record, heading into both the final conference and regular season game Friday against Newton Falls. 

The last time these two teams locked horns was on Friday, February 11th only a week prior to their second matchup. The Tigers were feeling it at home, pushing Campbell to the limit that night, as The Red Devils squeaked by with a narrow 55-53 victory. 

Having already clinched The MVAC Championship for the first time in 8 years, Campbell was looking to end the year perfect in their conference while sharpening their teeth for the tournament. 

Newton Falls looked to take away a lot of what Campbell does best on offense, much like they did in their first encounter. In fact, The Tigers were only the second team to hold Campbell under 60 points this season. 

With a great mind like Coach Sembach, Newton Falls had a great defensive gameplan, one that forced the ball out of Kevin Moore’s hands a ton. This made Campbell adjust to depend on other scoring options. 

Throughout all four quarters, Newton Falls made it difficult for Campbell to score, as they held The Red Devils down to just 56 points of offense in the game. Making The Tigers the only team to hold Campbell under 60 points twice this season.

However, Campbell used a balanced scoring approach, one that saw four players pitch in with 9+ points of offense on the evening. Pair that with a Red Devil Defense that had a rocking crowd behind them, and Campbell was able to pull off the 56-37 victory over Newton Falls.

 

Stats:

Kevin Moore: 12 PTS, 7 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK.

Kayvon Moore: 11 PTS, 3 REB, 1 STL, 4/7 FG (57%).

Xavion Leonard: 10 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 3 STL, 2 BLK.

Christian James (C.J.):  9 PTS, 6 REB, 2 AST, 3/5 3-PT FG (60%)

The win recorded #21 in the regular season for Campbell, the most in the regular season in school history. It also ties the record for most wins in a season (including postseason). 

The senior leaders of Campbell had a chance to shine, as we got a chance to catch up with every senior of this historic team! 

Campbell will waste little time going for historic win #22, as in Division 3’s Warren District, The #2 Red Devils will take on the winner of #18 Rootstown @ #13 Columbiana. That game will take place in Campbell and will occur on Friday, February 25th and can be found on YSN!

JAYS USE BALANCED OFFENSE TO JOURNEY ON

NORTH JACKSON OH- Jackson Milton is at their best when their offense is balanced. That would more than describe their scoring output on Saturday as they rolled over Newton Falls 58-21 to win a sectional championship. TheJays had 3 scorers in double figures and 5 players score.

Chelsea’s Williams led the way by calling off her last game on her home floor with a 19 point performance. Fellow seniors Kylie Wilson also had an impressive final home game with 17 points. Ava Darney was the third Jay in double figures with 12. Carla Blancafort added 8.

Jackson Milton moves on to the district semifinal where they will match up with Maplewood. That game is scheduled for Wednesday at Mineral Ridge. Tip is set at 7:30.

REBELS CAGE THE TIGERS

NEWTON FALLS, OH –  It was MVAC action in Newton Falls Thursday night as the Lady Tigers hosted Crestview. The Lady Rebels came into Thursday looking to get a boost in the conference late in the season. The boost they needed in Thursday’s matchup came early as they were able to get out to an 18-4 lead off the start. Newton Falls was able to cut the lead down throughout the game, but the fast start for the Rebels seemed to give them the advantage they needed in the victory over Newton Falls, 37-29.

 

For Crestview, Emily Hill led the Rebels with 13 points. McKenna Schultz contributed 11 on the night.

 

For Newton Falls, Gigi Morgan led the way with 9 points. Chloe Butler added 8 on the night for the Tigers.

 

Crestview will be back in action on Saturday as they host United. Newton Falls will be back in action on Friday, as they will travel to Liberty. Don’t miss it on YSN!

VIKINGS EXTEND WIN STREAK

NEWTON FALLS, OH – It was rivalry night in Newton Falls on Tuesday as the tigers hosted LaBrae. The Vikings came in looking for their sixth consecutive win on the season and a boost with a rivalry win. LaBrae would come out strong with scoring early and put pressure on Newton Falls. Newton Falls kept it in close range, but it was not enough as LaBrae earns that sixth consecutive over the Tigers, 67-56.   

 

For LaBrae, Blake Kahnell led all scorers with 21 points on the night. 

 

 

For Newton Falls, Mac Haidet led the Tigers with 19 points on the night

 

Both teams will be back in action on Friday. LaBrae will host Campbell, and Newton Falls will travel to Liberty. Don’t miss it on YSN!

NEWTON FALLS GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH MARK BAKER

NEWTON FALLS OH- Some of the best work in this world comes from the shadows when no one is looking. That is kind of the feel of the Newton Falls girls program. Even though they’re a program that has seen plenty of success, they seem to be overlooked going into this season. Everyone knows the MVAC will be a tough league to navigate, it would be a mistake to sleep on the Tigers, because the Tigers never sleep.

NEWTON FALLS BOYS BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER (EP 1) WITH ROY SEMBACH

NEWTON FALLS OH- The Tigers come walking into the 2021 season as owners of a MVAC championship. The reigning title holders will be top dog, or cat in this matter until someone knocks them off. Although there will be some new faces on the court this season, head coach Roy Sembach continues to be confident they can throw their hat in the ring for a back to back title run. Newton Falls will continue to get everyone’s best shot, and they welcome all challenges.

REBELS ROLL IN NEWTON FALLS

NEWTON FALLS OH- Crestview continues to roll throughout this season as they traveled to Newton Falls and rocked the Tigers 48-20.

Roclen Bettura continues to run well for the Rebels as he led the ground game with 151 yards on 14 carries. He totaled three touchdowns on the night as well. Anthony Cusick went 20/27 through the air with 270 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Yerkey was his favorite target catching 6 passes for 73 yards, and a touchdown.

Crestview will qualify for the OHSAA state playoffs and await a Week 11 opponent. Stay tuned to YSN for further updates on schedules and pairings for postseason football.

TIGERS WIN IN A TALE OF TWO HALVES

CAMPBELL, OH – In what was a tale of two halves at John Knapick Field, the Newton Falls Tigers came back from a 19-7 halftime deficit by going on a 22-3 run en route to an exciting 29-22 victory over the Campbell Memorial Red Devils.

The Tigers got things rolling on the opening drive with a methodical running attack led by Carter Rapczak. The drive ended with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Alex Pennington to Nick Rapczak. The Devils, however, had a response on their senior night. Campbell used the skill of Kayvon Moore to move down the field, then sold the Tigers out on a play fake as David Moore launched a 35-yard touchdown bomb to Christian James. The failed extra point kept the score at 7-6 Newton Falls

The Tigers were marching down the field again, but as the second quarter got underway, they fumbled the ball, giving it back to Campbell. The Red Devils took advantage with a 57-yard scamper to paydirt from Kayvon Moore to make it 12-7, Campbell’s first lead since Week 3. They continued their hot momentum streak with another turnover on defense, this time an interception. They then continued to harass the Newton Falls defense as Moore picked up his second touchdown from 4 yards out. Nick Rapczak’s interception of Moore on the next Campbell drive ended the first half for the Tigers on a high note after what was a nightmarish first 24 minutes of play on both sides of the ball.

The Red Devils got the ball to start the second half and drove down the field once again as they looked to make it a three-score game. A nice run by Christian Milhouse was negated due to a penalty on the play that would take the Devils out of field goal range and force them to punt. Newton Falls used this as motivation to correct themselves from their mistakes of the first half. Carter Rapczak started the comeback with a 20-yard run, as he then brought the Tigers within one score at 19-14. The defense then stepped up for Falls as they held the Devils on fourth down in Tiger territory to end the quarter.

The Tigers would use the turnover on downs to their advantage as Rapczak scored his second touchdown from 31 yards out to put Newton Falls back on top. The successful 2-point conversion made it a 22-19 ball game. The Devils had a lot of fight in them, though, as Kayvon Moore burst open for a 23-yard run to the Tiger 49. They would drive to the 22, but were called back by another penalty. A 16-yard pickup to the 18 would set up the situation for kicker Anthony Kindinis. The junior stood up to the task and booted a 35-yard field goal to knot the scoring at 22-22. Newton Falls, however, would not take much time to get back in the end zone. Rapczak burst down the sideline for a 45-yard run down to the Devils 16, followed by his third touchdown from nine out to make it 29-22 Tigers. The Devils had one more drive in them as they needed to get down the length of the field to either tie it up or take the lead with a two-point conversion. On a 4th & 7 with the game on the line, Kayvon Moore kept the drive alive with his feet on his way to a 42-yard run down to the Tiger 30. A sack, however, sent the Devils back to the 37 for a 4th & 17. Campbell was not able to pick up this conversion, however, as Nick Rapczak picked off Moore for the second time of the night.

The comeback win for Newton Falls ends their six-game losing streak as they go to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the MVAC Grey Tier. This is also the first road game that the Tigers have won since 2018, when they ironically beat Campbell in a defensive slugfest 6-2. They have lost 15 straight games away from home coming into tonight. The victory also helps them in terms of playoff seeding as they were ranked #18 in the 16-seed Region 21 of Division 6 before kickoff. They will end the regular season next week with a Senior Night against a 4-4 Crestview team coming off a thrilling 44-38 overtime victory over Champion.

The heartbreaking loss makes it sixth straight for the Red Devils as they fall to 1-8 on the year and 0-6 in the MVAC Grey Tier. Campbell ends their home campaign with a 1-4 mark at John Knapick as they will hit the road for their final game of the season at LaBrae. They will look to end their season on a high note against a Vikings team coming off a close 41-34 victory at Liberty and currently standing at #3 in Region 21.

LEOPARDS THE BIGGER CAT IN NEWTON FALLS

NEWTON FALLS OH- Liberty went on the road on Friday night and earned their second straight victory. They used a balanced attack to dominate the Tigers 53-19.

DC Ferrell was the definition of efficient through the air. He completed 12/13 with 204 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also was dangerous on the ground, he ran for 106 yards on 7 carries. Chris Cunningham put together his third straight 100 plus yard game. He caught 6 balls and went for 141 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Donte Venters ran for 44 yards on 9 carries and scored a touchdown. Liberty has combined for 129 points in the last 3 weeks.

Liberty has a big test next week as they will host LaBrae. Newton Falls will try to pick up their first MVAC win of the season as they square off with Campbell in Week 8.

BROOKFIELD TAMES THE TIGERS

BROOKFIELD, OHIO. The dominance of the Brookfield Warriors continues as they handedly defeated the Newton Falls Tigers 40 to 7.

The Warrior offense, led by quarterback Donovan Pawlowski on the ground and through the air as well as he through two touchdowns one to star wideout Isaiah Jones and the other to a wide open Xzavier Witherow in the endzone. The Newton Falls offense although led by the powerful running of running back Carter Rapczak, they only managed to get into the endzone just one time as the Brookfield defense led tonight by Colin Murphy and Aj Bartolin were just no match for the Newton Falls Tigers.

Brookfield looks to continue their winning ways next week travelling to face off against the tough Labrae Vikings. On the flip side the Newton Falls Tigers look to jump back into the win column as they will travel to Liberty to take on the Leopards.
