PIRATES SAIL PAST THE FALCONS TO REMAIN PERFECT

Perry, OH- In a matchup that showed why Perry is one of the best teams in the state, the Perry Pirates dominated the Jefferson Falcons, securing a commanding victory with a final score of 50-0.

The first quarter set the tone for Perry’s firm control. Owen Mckoon made an explosive 45-yard touchdown run, but the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, giving Perry an early lead of 6-0. The Falcons defense showed promise on the next series bringing Perry to a 4th and long.  The Pirates took a chance and decided to go for it on 4th down. The risk payed off with Walter Moses connecting on a 39-yard touchdown pass to Luke Sivon, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, extending their lead to 14-0. The following offensive series resulted in a 4th and long for the Falcons. The Falcons punt found its way to one of Perry’s top athletes, Brayden Richards who added to the lead with a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown, and another 2-point conversion made it 22-0. Just before the end of the first quarter, Walter Moses completed a 44-yard pass to Owen Mckoon, setting up a promising opportunity for the Pirates at the 1-yard line as the quarter concluded.

The second quarter saw no let-up from Perry. On the first play of the quarter, Jayden Studio pushed through for a 1-yard touchdown run, and a successful extra point extended the lead to 29-0. Perry’s defense continued to shine, as Luke Sivon intercepted a pass from Jefferson’s Kaige Boczar and returned it 50 yards for another touchdown. The extra point was good, pushing the score to 36-0. Perry’s defense also recovered a fumble from Luke Funtash. Walter Moses connected with Brayden Richards once again, this time for a 17-yard touchdown pass, and another successful extra point made it 43-0.

The third quarter saw no respite for Jefferson, as McKoy Richards added an 8-yard touchdown run, and the extra point was good, making it 50-0 in favor of the Pirates.

With a final score of 50-0, the Perry Pirates maintained their perfect record at 4-0 and are set to face the Geneva Eagles (4-0) in week 4. In contrast, the Jefferson Falcons dropped to 0-4 and are scheduled to host the Lutheran West Longhorns (2-2)  in their next matchup. The Perry Pirates showcased their strength and dominance, and following a huge win over the Kirtland Hornets in week 3 are now on the radars of everyone in division 5 statewide.

EDGEWOOD COMES UP SHORT IN BATTLE FOR FIRST

ASHTABULA OH- There was a ton on the line Saturday afternoon in Edgewood.  Both Perry and Edgewood fans knew it too.  With a gym full of tension two talented teams struggled to see who would have a hold of first place in the CVC.  Perry needed a win to grab it outright, and Edgewood was looking to even things up. It was a game of runs with the Pirates starting fast opening up a 10-2 lead.  Edgewood would answer with a might 11-0 run and turn in to a 13-10 lead. But then it was Perry that had the counter punch ending the second quarter with a 21-11 edge in the frame.

Perry would extend that run into a 15 point lead after a dominant 13-6 3rd quarter. The Warriors lived up to their name though and had one last push. With the fourth quarter ticking away Edgewood cut the lead to as little as 5.  The Pirates just made too many plays down the stretch for Edgewood to complete their comeback.  They went on to win 59-52.

Perry was led by Grace McKoon who willed them to victory with a game-high 22 points.  Izzy McKoon was also in double figures for the Pirates with 12.  Victoria Lynch added 8 points to the Pirate cause.

Kaci Kanicki was as magical as ever scoring 21 points and practically single handedly pulled her team back in the game in the fourth.  Katie McCollister did a lot of work off the drive and was right behind Kanicki with 20 points.

The Warriors have a crossover CVC matchup on Tuesday as they host West Geauga.

HAREN’S HEROICS BEAT PERRY AT THE BUZZER

LOUISVILLE OH- The game on Saturday between Louisville and Perry got wild down the stretch.  The two teams traded blows back and forth the whole time.  With the game tied at halftime at 23-23, the separation wouldn’t get much bigger in the second half.  Perry was grasping on to a 4 point lead with 1:19 to go in the game.  After Louisville would cut the lead down to 1 with a couple trips to the free throw line, Perry would have their chance at the charity stripe. With 5.9 seconds left on the clock, the Panthers missed the free throw, Louisville picked it up, got it to Brooke Haren who drained a deep three at the buzzer to give the Leopards a 51-49 win.

Haren would finish the game with 16 points, but I’d course none were important than those final three.  Taryn Miglich was next on the stat sheet with 13 points. Courtney Barwick tallied 12 points for the Leopards offense.  The Leopards shot 70% from the free throw line on their way to the win. They also hit eight shots from the perimeter.

Louisville wins their second home game of the season. It was the program’s 300th win inside their gym. It also moved head coach Jeff Couto up on the all time win list. He now sits at 145 wins.  He passed Garee McCully.  Louisville will continue their season as they host Dover on Saturday.

SOUTH RANGE POSES PROBLEM FOR PERRY

BURTON, OH- “To get to the state final game, you have to beat good teams,” said Dan Yeagley.

And beating good teams is exactly what South Range has done all season, and repeated that recipe last night in an explosive 49-21 victory over Perry on Friday night to claim the Division V Region 17 Crown.

The temperatures were a bit frigid, and like some of the cars starting up to make the hour-long drive to Berkshire High School, the offenses didn’t start up when the key was turned.  The Raiders cracked the goose egg just before the first quarter ended with a 3-yard score from Blake Ewert to make it 7-0.  On the next possession, Ewert would find paydirt from 30 yards away to put the Raiders up 14-0.  South Range would keep on rocking in the second quarter when Billy Skripac would push his way across the goal line and put South Range up 21-0 going into the half.

Perry had some confidence coming out of the locker room because the talented Brayden Richards helped the Pirates march downfield and get on the board from 6 yards away with a rushing touchdown, and hoping to give Perry some momentum.

That momentum was short-lived as Blake Ewert would roll over a defender and stay off of the turf and on his feet to sprint away from the defenders for a 65-yard score to put the Raiders back up three scores at 28-7.

On the next possession, South Range would look into their stable of backs to find sophomore, Aidan Dominguez who plowed his way behind the offensive line from 23 yards out to make the score 35-7.

Logan Butcher would then bounce a kick off an up-man for Perry with the Raiders falling on the football, and moments later Skripac would connect with JD Crouse on a crossing route that would result in a 43-yard strike and start the mercy clock with the score being 42-7 with 2:53 left in the third quarter.

That running clock would be short-lived as Perry would not give up, Walter Moses would help lead a drive that culminated with a 7-yard TD pass to Owen McKoon to shorten the distance to 42-14.

South Range would lock things down with six and a half minutes remaining when Aidan Dominguez would bully his way off of tackles into the endzone from 13 yards out.  Perry would add one more score at the 2:36 mark to finalize the scoring at 49-21.

South Range’s offense sprouted 377 yards from scrimmage, while the Raider defense only gave up 147.  The Raiders averaged 7.5 yards per play on the night and paced the first downs as well at a 22-12 clip.  The only stat the Raiders didn’t care to be on the short side of was penalties as South Range was nailed 6 times for 65 yards and had a pair of scores called back via holding calls.

Skripac would only put the ball in the air 7 times on the night, completing 4 of those for 80 yards and a score.  The majority of the damage would come from the running game, as Skripac would carry the ball 8 times for 29 yards.  The E-Train, Blake Ewert chugged his way along the track for 169 yards on 16 carries and 3 scores.  Aidan Dominguez averaged 6 yards a touch with 82 yards and 2 scores on 14 carries.  Jake Starkey would haul the rock for 22 yards on four totes.

JD Crouse led the receivers with 43 yards in his lone catch, Shane Lindstrom would have a grab for 31 yards, and Tyler Remish would have a 9-yard completion as well.

Remish would lead the way on defense with 7 tackles including a sack and 6 solos.  Nick Plunkett controlled the defensive backfield with 4 takedowns of his own, and Jake Starkey held down the middle with 3.5 tackles.

Walter Moses was bottled up most of the night through the air, completing 5 of 9 passes for 66 yards and a score, but threw 2 picks.

Brayden Richards was impressive on the ground from all over the field, he carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards and a score.  Jaden Hacking had a carry for 12 yards, and Jayden Studio had 2 carries and a score.  Owen McKoon was all over the yard and stopped the Raiders on 9.5 occasions that included 7 solos, and 5 assists.  Brayden Richards also had 9.5 stops for the Pirates on defense.

South Range will continue their unblemished season in Clyde, Ohio next week as they will play Liberty Center- who defeated Elmwood 49-38 on Friday night.

YSN will have the audio broadcast of the State Semi-Finals on November 25th at no cost, coverage will begin at approximately 6:55 that evening.

CARDINALS FLY INTO NEXT ROUND

CHARDON OH- Canfield had a battle on their hands in the sectional final of their district bracket. They were lined up with a talented Perry Pirates team.  The Cardinals had enough steam to push to a four set victory to advance in the tournament.

The Cardinals offense was very balanced, Abby Muckleroy led the offense with 13 kills. Two other players finished with 12 as Addie Fonderlin and Carly Slaven had good days swinging.  Maddy Cleevely and Bella Bucciarelli both had 11 kills as well.  Riley Kinkade helped spread out that offense with a team high 27 assists.  Parker Wilkins led the defense with 20 digs on the night.

Canfield punches their ticket to the district semifinals. They’ll need all that firepower as they’ll square off with a talented Notre Dame Cathedral Latin who is the highest seed in the Streetsboro bracket. The match is slated for 6:00 at Streetsboro on Wednesday.

EDGEWOOD BATTLES TO A SCORELESS TIE

PERRY OH- Edgewood made a pretty good trip to Perry on Thursday and it was such a battle. Both teams had a couple chances, but in the end the defenses would prevail in a 0-0 tie. Warrior senior Emily Weeks will continue to try and put pressure on defenses as she leases the team in points.

Edgewood is still working hard trying to find their first win since the first week of September. They definitely got close against the Pirates. Edgewood will have another shot at it on Saturday as they host Cornerstone Christian. The Patriots will come in to that game with a 4-7 record overall. Edgewood is now 2-9-1.

JOURDAN’S DOUBLE DOUBLE HIGHLIGHTS FALCONS IMPRESSIVE START

AUSTINTOWN OH-

In one of many volleyball games to kick off the high school season, Austintown Fitch opened up their season on Saturday morning. Their opponents? A Federal League Foe in The Massillon Perry Panthers! These two teams last met in 2021 as a part of a tri-match in which Austintown won two sets to none.

In their rematch from a year ago, both teams had different looks teamwise, as both teams graduated a fair number of players a season ago. One constant that returned from last year was senior superstar Jocelyn Jourdan, who had 14 Kills in the win against Perry in 2021.

She would end up being a huge contributor again the second time around, as Set 1 was back and forth all the way down to the end. Neither team was able to capture a lead larger than 4 points throughout the first set. But it was the play of freshman Rylie Simons, securing two aces to score the final two points in Set 1, winning it for Fitch 25-22!

In Set 2, The Falcons used that momentum from the prior set and forced Perry into a lot of mistakes early on. At one point, Austintown led by as much as eight points 17-9; however, Perry battled back! With the play of Sarah Mohr and Emma Weirich, Perry scored nine consecutive points to take an 18-17 lead. But Fitch showed composure, exchanging points but ultimately coming out on top 25-23 over The Panthers in Set 2.

By Set 3, Jocelyn Jourdan was on a different level! Finishing multiple kills emphatically, totaling 17 on the night, as Austintwon put the finishing touches on a 25-22 Set 3 win! A victory that lead to the overall match win that put Fitch at 1-0 on the season!

The Falcons will hit the road for the next three games, as the first game will be against a great program in Hathaway Brown. Stats for the match can be found below!
