LADY RAIDERS REJECT ROOTSTOWN

The South Range Lady Raiders advanced to the district semifinals Saturday afternoon with a 58-22 win over Rootstown.

The 10 seed Rootstown Rovers fresh off an upset victory over East Palestine came into the game with energy. Going toe to toe with the Raiders. The two teams traded buckets back and forth and were tied at 6-6. Bree Kohler who did much of the damage for the Raiders on both sides of the ball was able to spark a 7-1 run to end the first frame and give the Raiders a 13-7 lead.

As the game went on it was clear the Raiders were the better team. The defense gathered 22 steals 7 of them by Kohler. Bro Modic also had a hand in the Raiders domination going 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and also being an aggressive driver. The Raiders outscored the Rovers 47-15 from the 2nd quarter on. They would go on to win 58-22 and advance to the next round.

Bree Kohler led the way for the Raiders with 16 points 7 steals and 4 assists. Bri Modic was also in double figures with 13 points. Izzy Lamparty had 13 points 6 rebounds. The Raiders move on to play Southeast at Struthers High School  on Wednesday, February 27 at 7:45

THE WIZARD OF IZ

Everyone is familiar with the great story and film “The Wizard of Oz.”  The tale about a young lady losing her way in a faraway land, only to find friends she lends a hand to provide them with finding themselves, while she finds a piece of herself along the way.

This story isn’t much different.

South Range Sophomore Izzy Lamparty has stepped out from the shadows of her freshmen year, overcome a devastating injury, and has come out playing better than she ever has.  Albeit, she’s had to undergo more sacrifice than ever before and has had friends help her find herself again.  All while making her friends and teammates better while she’s on the floor.

With the courage of a lion, the heart of a tin-man, and the brains of the scarecrow.  Izzy Lamparty is able to bring her multi-faceted attack to gyms all winter long and now prepares for a long run in the state playoffs where the Lady Raiders have earned the right to click their heels together and say “There’s No Place Like Home.”

ACTION JAXON

Dripping with swagger, South Range Senior-Jaxon Anderson has shown maturity in his efforts on and off the court.  Normally, it’s Anderson’s smirks or bubbly personality that gets under the skin of opponents- but this year Jaxon is leading in a different way: that of a veteran presence.

Still one of the top point-scorers, and ball-handlers for the Raiders, Anderson has evolved into a more complete leader for the underclassmen.  There are times on the court where Jaxon will throw his arm over a teammates shoulder and crack a joke one second, and talk strategy the next.  Leadership is an influence, and Jaxon Anderson is the ultimate influencer for this Raiders Squad.  Although, he’ll never shy away from a little “discussion” with his “friends” of a different uniform.

All the great things that he does on the court, doesn’t even hold a candle to what he’s doing away from it.  Anderson’s Senior Project is based around Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation; a non-profit organization that helps families and children dealing with childhood cancer.  Anderson has pointed to his performance on the court to help raise money and awareness for this cause.  In March, the senior will partner with YSN to hold a charity All-Star game with all proceeds of ticket sales and souvenirs going back to ALSF.

KOHL BLOODED

South Range sophomore standout Bree Kohler has always known she has the ability to lead, and now she’s proving it.  Kohler traded in her cleats for sneaks right after softball season with one goal in mind: Level Up from 2018.

The Lady Raiders had a great year from an outsiders point of view, but Kohler wants more.  She’s earned more responsibility on both sides of the floor and now sets her personal and team goals higher.

Kohler has taken a different approach from last year’s success.  She’s now a vocal leader, a top-scorer, and sets the tone for South Range on and off the court.  As an active player in multiple sports, Bree has to put the blinders on and maintain focus for three months at a time, but that transition is not always easy.

Our Anthony Hartwig sits down with Bree to discuss all this and more on the South Range Basketball Player Profile: KOHL BLOODED

ONE FOR THE RECORD BROOKS

There’s a saying at South Range High School that players and coaches alike abide by.  They all play “South Range ________”  Whether it be football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc.  South Range athletes are born to play a certain way.  When you look at it from the outside, there’s a certain dynamic to it:  scrappy, fast, tough, all-out, relentless in all they do.  There’s an ego that is dismissed from the jump.

The “Raider-Way” is a way of thinking and acting, not of playing.

So, when you’re looking for the perfect personification of that ideal, you don’t have to look any further than South Range’s own, Chris Brooks.  The Raider Junior exemplifies the attitude that coaches love to have on their team.  A natural leader with a cool head on his shoulders, Brooks knows when to lead the team on the court, and when to take a different role.

This week Brooks won the Week 7 Baird Brothers Big Dog of the Valley with his strong showing against Salem.  Nearly unstoppable in that game, and truly hitting his stride midseason, Chris is our focus of the South Range Player Profile: ONE FOR THE RECORD BROOKS!

SOUTH RANGE BASKETBALL COACH’S CORNER WITH JOHN CULLEN

In South Range, the reigns of the Hoops Program is run by legendary Coach, John Cullen.  Known for his Basketball IQ and the way he is able to transfer that knowledge onto the court for the Raiders is one of the biggest reasons for the success of the program under his watch.  As he’ll tell you, the other reasons come down to the execution of the game plan.  While the Raiders are having a successful campaign so far, Coach C knows and acknowledges that the biggest burdens are yet to come.

With all that being said, the Raiders are doing what the Raiders always do.  Win with what they have.  Not a tall team this year, South Range has had to create their opportunities by playing outstanding defense and setting the pace offensively.

YSN’s Brent Bigelow sat down with Coach Cullen to discuss how the team has faired thus far, as well as looking into the crystal ball for what’s to come.

All that and more on Episode 1 of South Range Coach’s Corner with John Cullen.

SAUER POWER

You no longer have to look to the Marvel Universe for a superhero.  In fact, you don’t have to look far at all.  South Range’s Senior Basketball Star, Brooke Sauerwein has taken some sour lemons and has hand-crafted some great lemonade for her senior year.

For those unaware, Brooke suffered a devastating knee injury during the Lady Raiders playoff run last year.  Sauerwein served as the team spark off the bench where she takes the floor and instantly outworks her opponents.  Known for her grit, determination, and ability to hustle-Brooke Sauerwein is best known for her sparkling personality off the court and superpowers on it.

YSN’s Anthony Hartwig sat down with Brooke for this week’s South Range Basketball Player Profile: SAUER POWER.
